1,The shake-out and rebuild at Zynga continues with the San Francisco F2P outfit hiring industry veteran Pete Hawley as its new vice president and general manager.

Hawley was previously CEO of location-based studio Red Robot Labs.

Prior to that he’d worked in senior positions ranging from head of production at Lionhead Studios to developer director at Sony London and executive producer at Criterion, then part of EA.

EA connection

And, it was likely this, combined with a stint as veep of production development at EA UK that makes the Zynga connection given that the company is now headed by EA veterans Don Mattrick as CEO and Clive Downie as COO.

The move comes as part of a widespread restructuring at Zynga during 2014, which on the production side has seen the likes of SVP, mobile Travis Boatman, studio president Steve Chiang and head of acquisitions Terence Fung leave.(source:pocketgamer
2,”I’m not leaving games, but I am leaving AAA”

On Friday games writer Walt Williams announced he was leaving 2K after nine years.

Williams joined the company in August 2005 and during his time there has contributed to a huge number of games. He was most recently the lead writer on Spec Ops: The Line but his portfolio also includes The Darkness II, BioShock 2 and more recently Evolve and Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth.

He called his time at 2K “one of the most trying, difficult, and mind-blowingly wonderful experiences” of his life and thanked fans for playing the games he worked on.(source:gameindustry

3,Polygon’s Chris Plante is giving up his role as editor-at-large of the gaming site to become senior editor at another Vox Media property, The Verge.

“Next week, I will begin my transition from Editor-at-Large at Polygon to Senior Editor at The Verge,” he said in a statement.

“I am sad to leave the best publication I’ve ever worked for, though I’m only moving a few desks away. I’m not really leaving the physical space. And I’ll still appear on Polygon as often as they will allow me.”

Vox Media launched Polygon on October 24, 2012 with Plante as part of the original 16 strong team. Prior to joining Polygon Plante freelanced for a number of publications including Edge, MTV, Onion AV Club and Joystiq and spent two years with UGO Networks.(source:gameindustry

4,Three ex-Zynga employees have launched their new, self-funded indie studio SuperMoon Games today.

Jim Vessella, Kyle Van Meurs, and Simon Armstrong started the San Francisco studio so they could make the type of game they wanted to make.

“We spent years trying to get space games greenlit at larger publishers. Going indie was the opportunity to finally make our dreams a reality,” Vessella told GamesIndustry.biz

“Working at Zynga was like going to graduate school in social and free-to-play gaming. At SuperMoon we’re utilizing that foundation, but adding some key components to deliver an incredibly fun and generous free-to-play experience.”

The team started prototyping in November 2013 and the company officially formed in January 2014. Prior to founding SuperMoon Vessella spent almost three years with Zynga on games like Empires & Allies. Prior to that he worked with LucasArts and EA.

SuperMoons’s first title will be a mobile game, Galaxy Dash: Race to the Outer Run, which will be released on iOS and Android on September 18.

“Mobile was the ideal platform to deliver a bite-sized space combat experience. We hope Galaxy Dash can be your space combat snack between entree sessions of Star Citizen.”(source:gameindustry
