6)据venturebeat报道,Cowen & Company分析师Doug Creutz指出,EA旗下两大热门手机游戏《The Simpsons:Tapped Out》(发布于2012年2月)以及《The Sims Freeplay》(发布于2011年12月)最近开始失势,前者从6月至7月已经跌至iPhone畅销榜单第19名,而后者也下降6个名次,跌至第20名。

最显著的当属Glu Mobile(其目前最热门游戏是《Kim Kardashian:Hollywood》,在英美市场收益榜单位居前五名),现在已经是iPhone畅销开发商榜单第4名,在Google Play热门开发商榜单也位列第10名。

除此之外,King目前也有4款游戏位居iOS和Google Play畅销榜单前20名。(本文为游戏邦/gamerboom.com编译,拒绝任何不保留版权的转载,如需转载请联系:游戏邦

1)Women are more loyal than men … when it comes to video games

Jeffrey Grubb

Smartphones have enabled more kinds of people to start gaming, and women are showing that they have different habits when it comes to digital entertainment than men do.

Women, on average, spend more time and money on mobile games than men, according to a recent study from mobile-advertising platform Flurry. In fact, based on its examination of games that have more than 1.1 million players, Flurry found that women make 31-percent more in-app transactions than men. Women also spend 35 percent more time in mobile games. Women also tend to pick a game and stick with it. Female players are 42 percent more likely than men to still check into a game seven days after installing it. Figures like these go a long way toward explaining the popularity and money-making power of games like Candy Crush Saga and the recently released Kim Kardashian: Hollywood

“While the fact that females invest more time in gaming apps, especially in management and simulation games, has rarely been disputed, the fact that females also outspend males in In-App Purchases came as a surprise to us,” Flurry analyst Simon Khalaf wrote in the report.

Women are particularly drawn to the management and simulation genres as well as solitaire and slots. Men lean toward card battlers and strategy.

Games account for 32 percent of the time that people spend on their smartphones and tablets, and brands can reach engaged men and women by placing ads in something like Kim Kardashian’s game.(source:venturebeat

2)’We aspire to do better’: Zynga releases lukewarm financials

By Kris Graft

Zynga has been working to reposition a business that was traditionally focused on desktop browsers to one that is able to compete on mobile devices. But the ongoing transition isn’t easy.

For the quarter ended in June, the company announced revenue that missed analyst expectations, and lowered full-year guidance for bookings.

“While our quarterly financial results were in line with our guidance range, we aspire to do better and improve execution across our business,” said CEO Don Mattrick, who took the reins at Zynga this year after leaving his executive role at Xbox.

“We are purposefully competing, and while we would like to be further along, we believe we are making the right decisions to grow our business and unlock long term shareholder value,” he added.

The company reported non-GAAP quarterly revenues of $153 million, missing analyst expectations of $191 million. Revenues were down from $231 million for the same quarter a year prior.

Non-GAAP profits were $3 million, better than the $6 million loss for the same quarter a year ago.

Bookings, which measure virtual item sales, were down 7 percent for the quarter to $175 million.

In light of that performance, Zynga reduced its full-year expectations for bookings to be between $695 million and $725 million, which is down from the previous guidance range of $770 million to $810 million.

Mattrick has high hopes that investment in new games, including partnerships with Tiger Woods and the NFL, will boost Zynga in the months ahead.(source:gamasutra

3)Mass Effect director Casey Hudson quits BioWare

The developer responsible for one of the biggest role-playing game franchises of the last generation is moving on.

Casey Hudson, who oversaw the Mass Effect sci-fi RPG series, revealed that he is leaving BioWare. In a blog on its website, BioWare confirmed that Hudson is departing the company. The studio notes that its sci-fi RPG mastermind wants to “enter a new stage of his career” — although he’s going to kick that off by taking a “much-needed break.”(source:venturebeat

4)Tiger Woods returns to games – and now he’s with Zynga

By Kris Graft

Under the guidance of CEO and former Xbox boss Don Mattrick, Zynga continues its effort to redefine its business.

The company known best for farming on Facebook said today it would be entering the licensed sports category, and both the NFL and Tiger Woods are on board.

NFL Showdown is a new officially-licensed team management game from Zynga. The mobile game hits digital storefronts today, and comes under a new Zynga franchise brand, dubbed Zynga Sports 365.

Additionally, less than a year after he and Electronic Arts parted ways, golf star Tiger Woods will be headlining new Zynga golf games, as part of a multi-year, multi-platform deal. Zynga said the new Tiger Woods game is for mobile, and is early in development, expected to launch in 2015.

Zynga is also releasing a new mobile game in the endless runner genre featuring Looney Toons characters, as part of a deal with Warner Bros. That game is slated to launch before this holiday.

The new partnerships are part of Zynga’s plans “to do better.” The company announced its lukewarm fiscal Q2 earnings today.(source:gamasutra

5)Lawsuit filed against Big Fish over monthly game subscriptions

By Mike Rose

A lawsuit has been filed in Seattle’s U.S. District Court against casual game publisher Big Fish, claiming that the company is tricking customers into signing up for monthly payments on game subscriptions.

As spotted by Geekwire, the filing by Carolyn Carnahan, and on behalf of anyone else in her position, alleges that Big Fish enrolls you in a membership program in a non-obvious manner when you buy a game through the website.

The terms of the subscription team are not properly provided at check-out, says the complaint, unless you click a link to see more details. The website “provides no warning whatsoever during the checkout process that the customer will be charged on a monthly recurring basis,” it reads.

Carnahan claims that she demanded a refund from Big Fish once she has spotted the charges on her credit card 18 months later, but the company did not provide her with a full refund.

Her attorney says that, while digging into other similar cases, it has found that there are a high volume of other people who have also been stung by this system. The complaint is seeking damages.(source:gamasutra

6)EA’s big mobile games are losing ground to Kim Kardashian, Hearthstone, and King’s Bubble Witch

Jeffrey Grubb

Electronic Arts is watching as its biggest (but aging) mobile games are starting to wane in popularity. Publishers like Glu, King, and Blizzard, on the other hand, are all seeing their recent releases climb the mobile charts. This is an example of the difficult and competitive mobile-gaming landscape that can prove a challenge even for the biggest game makers. With an estimated $20 billion in consumer spending on smartphone and tablet apps on the line in 2014, few publishers are willing to sit it out.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out, which debuted February 2012, and The Sims Freeplay, which hit in December 2011, are two of EA’s biggest hits on smartphone, but each look like they are on their way out, according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz. The Simpsons dropped nine places to No. 19 on the iPhone’s top-grossing chart from June to July. The Sims Freeplay dropped six spots to No. 20. Bejeweled Blitz, EA’s third-biggest mobile game, fell out of the top 20 completely.

“As a result, EA’s market share was down between 13 percent and 20 percent across [iPhone, iPad, and Google Play],” wrote Creutz.

EA Mobile still has 140 million monthly active players, and the company reported that its smartphone games generated $120 million last quarter. That is up 18 percent over the previous year, but Cowen is looking at the company’s performance this quarter.

While EA’s games are struggling, other mobile publishers are seeing growth. Most notably, developer Glu Mobile has what is probably its biggest hit ever with Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. The studio is now the No. 4 highest-grossing developer on iPhone and No. 10 on Google Play. That’s thanks to the hundreds of thousands of dollars that its new celebrity-fueled game is bringing in each day.

“Kardashian continues to monetize in the top 5 in the U.S. and U.K.,” wrote Creutz.

Glu’s mobile revenues are only going to get stronger as the company recently acquired developer Cie Games, which is responsible for a pair of popular driving games. When combined, Glu and Cie move up from No. 10 on Google Play to No. 4.

Mobile megapublisher King has a new success of its own, and it didn’t even need to rely on a reality-TV star. While the company has yet to release a game that matched Candy Crush Saga’s level of revenues, its Bubble Witch Saga 2 is still performing well. In July, the bubble-shooting puzzler finished as the No. 12 top-grossing app on iOS and No. 7 on Google Play.

“King now has four top-20 grossing games across iOS and Google Play, [which is] tops among all developers,” wrote Creutz. “That includes four top-10 highest-grossing games on Google Play.”(source:venturebeat
