1)Apple and Samsung make up two-thirds of the U.S. smartphone market

J. O’Dell

Motorola, LG, and HTC are getting left in the dust, according to new data from research outfit NDP Group.

According to a study, Apple and Samsung account for a huge 68 percent of the smartphone market in the United States — and that’s a trend that’s only being magnified as time goes by.

You want a chart? We got a chart:

As you can see above, wins for Apple and Samsung add up to losses for exactly everyone else.

iPhones alone captured 42 percent of the market, up from 35 percent in 2012. Samsung bumped up 4 percent year over year from 22 percent to 26 percent.

In terms of OS market share around the globe, however, Android is still the clear winner, capturing a whopping 81 percent.

HTC saw the biggest losses in terms of market share, and the all-time loser of 2013 was — drum roll — BlackBerry.

The report also shows a correlating spike in data usage from 5.5 GB to 6.6 GB per person a month between 2012 and 2013.

Also, more smartphones and more data usage mean one more big increase: streaming media. For streaming music alone, the percentage of people who stream media on their smartphones rose from 41 percent at the end of 2012 to 52 percent at the end of 2013.(source:venturebeat

2)U.S. digital game sales grew 11% in 2013

By Alex Wawro

The U.S. digital games market continues to grow at a brisk pace, reaping more than $11.6 billion in sales during 2013. That’s an 11 percent increase over the previous year, according a recent digital game sales report from market research firm SuperData.

SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen suggests that the U.S. digital games market saw a significant boost this year because both the Christmas and New Year holidays occurred mid-week, leading to a 36 percent boost in December digital game sales year-over-year.

The biggest earners in the U.S. digital games market last year were mobile titles, which account for just over a quarter of the overall sales pie with an estimated total revenue of $3.6 billion. They’re neck-and-neck with free-to-play games, which earned roughly $2.9 billion in the U.S. last year — up 45 percent from the year prior.(source:gamasutra

3)Offensive Combat studio closes a year after launching its shooter on Facebook and mobile

Jeffrey Grubb

The studio that made the South Park of Facebook shooters is no more.

U4iA Games has closed its doors. The developer released one free-to-play game for browsers and mobile, and it employed around 26 people.

“It is with a heavy heart that we write this, but tomorrow, Jan. 15, will be the last day of operations for U4iA Games,” creative director Jeremy Dunham wrote on the studio’s website. “

Our sincere apologies to all of our fantastic, supportive fans over these last few years — we wish we could have done better for you. Thank you very much for your support, and we hope to see you again on the other side.”

On Twitter, Dunham suggested that the shutdown came suddenly and unexpectedly.

So, we found out in the blink of an eye that @U4iaGames was shutting down today. Huge shout-out to my co-workers. Great people.—
Jeremy Dunham (@DunhamSmash) January 15, 2014

Last January, the studio released Offensive Combat on Facebook and mobile. The shooter has players taking control of soldiers, giant lizards, and men in banana suits in a deathmatch mulitplayer setting. The company tried to set its game apart by including crass humor similar to television shows like The League and South Park.

Our review found the game funny and fun to play, but it also found some issues with Offensive Combat’s payment model for items.

Offensive Combat is still up and running on Facebook. While it won’t see any further support from U4iA, we’ve reached out to ask how long the game will remain online. We’ll update this post with any further information.

U4iA founders Dusty Welch and Chris Archer started the development company in 2011 after leaving Activision. We’ve also reached out to them to ask what led to the closure.(source:venturebeat

The awards are chosen by the A.I.A.S.’ 22,000+ members across development and publishing, which includes the members of the IGDA.
