1) More 2K Games layoffs, as one of 2K Czech’s studios closes

By Mike Rose

2K Games continues to evaluate its development resources, with the confirmation this morning that the company is closing one of its studios in the Czech Republic.

In a statement to Eurogamer, a 2K representative explained that the 2K Czech team at the Prague studio has been “relocated and consolidated” and will now work out of its remaining Brno studio instead.

Meanwhile, some staffers have been moved to the 2K headquarters in Novato, California, while an unknown number of staff has been laid off.

“This transition will both strengthen the integration of the 2K Czech team with our award winning development teams, and better align cross-functional business practices,” reads the statement. “As part of this realignment, we are adjusting our staffing levels, resulting in the elimination of some positions.”

2K Czech is best known for Mafia II and the Hidden & Dangerous series. It’s thought the pair of studios have been working on another Mafia follow-up.

2)£7 Sega Rhythm Thief game removed from App Store after 24 hours

by Zen Terrelonge

Just yesterday, Sega released Rhythm Thief and the Paris Caper for iOS, which combines music, puzzles and adventure with characters Raphael and his dog Fondue.

It has since been removed from the App Store, however, due to a unexpected batch of bugs surfacing.

Sega’s official statement says: “An unexpected problem has been discovered in the version of Rhythm Thief that was available yesterday on the Apple App Store, so we have removed it temporarily from the store as we work on a fix.

“Our development team is hard at work to update the game and it will be back online very soon. Anyone who has purchased the game already will be able to play it as soon as it is back. We will keep you updated and we thank you in advance for your continued patience.”

During yesterday’s launch of the £6.99 game, Sega’s digital business VP, Chris Olson, said: “Rhythm Thief & The Paris Caper fits well with our ongoing mission to bring diverse, high quality titles to the mobile games space.”(source:mobile-ent

3)State of Decay dev Undead Labs signs long-term deal with Microsoft

By Christian Nutt

Newsbrief: In a post on his company’s blog, Undead Labs founder Jeff Strain reveals that the studio has inked a major deal with Microsoft Studios — a “multi-year, multi-title agreement,” according to Strain.

While he said that it’s too early to divulge any more details, he did cap the news by noting “suffice it to say there are big things going on with State of Decay.”

State of Decay is one of the biggest successes in the history of Xbox Live Arcade; it sold 250,000 copies in two days, and according to Microsoft’s official Xbox blog is the platform’s fastest-selling original Xbox Live Arcade title.

4)Google updates Play services with Drive API, Google+ sharing, turn-based multiplayer, and more

Eric Blattberg

Google is now rolling out its Google Play Services 4.1 update, bringing a medley of additions and enhancements to developers who want to integrate Google services into their mobile apps — and broadening the range of games players can now play and developers can bring to the platform.

Play Games now support turn-based multiplayer, so developers can now build asynchronous games for up to eight players. Every time someone takes a turn, it uploads that data to Play Services and automatically shares it with other players.

Google is offering developers a “preview” of its new Google Drive API for Android, which they can use to read and write files in Google Drive. Players can work with the files both online and offline. (If they’re offline, changes will sync with Google Drive when they reconnect.)

Google+ is getting a boost as well with improved sharing features, which include auto-complete functionality and suggested recipients from Gmail contacts, device contacts, and Google+ users. These additions will make it “even easier for users to share with the right people from your app,” said Google.

Developers using Google’s ad products will see some additions to its Mobile Ads SDK, which now fully supports DoubleClick for Publishers, DoubleClick Ad Exchange, and Search Ads for Mobile Apps.

Google is also ramping up publisher support for location-based advertising, offering developers the opportunity to tap into a location API to provide Google with location when requesting ads.

“Location-based ads can improve your app monetization,” Google noted.

Lastly, the update also improves battery life for all users with location reporting enabled, said Google, although the company didn’t provide specific details suggesting how much of a battery boost Android users should expect.

Google Play Services 4.1 should be available for all Android devices within the next few days, after which time developers can download the SDK and start using the new APIs.(source:venturebeat

5)Updated: Zynga to finally shut down one of its oldest games, YoVille

Dean Takahashi

Zynga told its players a couple of days ago that it would shut down one of its oldest games, YoVille, by the end of March. The title has been around since 2008. YoVille is a casual game for people to play in a town-like community. It grew to a point where millions of people were playing it, and it spawned a whole series of “Ville” games, light-hearted simulations like FarmVille.

But Zynga’s troubles have caught up with it. The company has had a hard time transitioning from Facebook games to mobile releases on iOS and Android, which has resulted in a rapid decline of its audiences on the aforementioned social network. The developer has cut its work force dramatically and shuttered a number of other games. YoVille apparently was immune from that, until now.

Some “YoVillians” are taking it hard and have started a grassroots campaign with more than 5,000 signatures to save YoVille. They’re threatening to boycott Zynga altogether if it doesn’t save the game.

“We, the undersigned, vow to stop playing ALL Zynga games if YoVille is shut down. Sell the game to another company if you have no interest in maintaining it, but do not just pull the plug. If you do, you will lose us completely as customers.”

We’ve asked Zynga for comment. Zynga told players in December 2012 that it was not shutting down YoVille. The players said they paid for VIP memberships on the basis of such promises. Big Tree (now Big Viking Games) developed the game.

When individuals log in to YoVille now, they’ll see a notice from Zynga about the difficult decision to shut down the game. The San Francisco firm is offering to transfer any virtual goods players have purchased and give them gifts that they can use in other Zynga games: FarmVille 2, Zynga Poker, and Hit It Rich! Casino Slots.

If Zynga is planning to close down the game, as it has told players in its forums, then it appears the company’s efforts to turn itself around are still facing challenges. Don Mattrick, former head of Microsoft’s games business, joined Zynga as CEO last summer, with founder Mark Pincus moving to chief product officer. Mattrick has followed through on cost-cutting plans, but he didn’t immediately cut titles like YoVille. But it looks like the old game has finally fallen.

In a statement, the company said, “Zynga recently made the tough decision to sunset YoVille so we can put more time and energy into developing new games for our players. Over the years YoVille developed a truly passionate community, and we thank our players for their dedication to the game. We look forward to delivering new and exciting social games that we hope our players will love playing with their friends and family as much as they loved YoVille.”

Mattrick has said in two past earnings calls that he is in the process of reassessing and resetting the company’s product pipeline and that Zynga is working on new projects.(source:venturebeat
