1)Report: Playforge to shutter, entire staff facing layoff

By Kris Ligman

Reports are circling that Zombie Farm developer The Playforge is shutting down, affecting all remaining staff.

The San Francisco-headquartered Playforge was acquired by Saban Brands in August of last year, shortly after a set of layoffs in which around 20 staff members were let go.

This week, Inside Mobile Apps cites a source as saying Playforge’s remaining team members were notified earlier this week of the studio’s closure, the result of rising costs and poor commercial performance on some of its titles.

Gamasutra has been able to obtain confirmation of the studio’s in-progress closure from a separate source.(source:gamasutra

3)Microsoft trumpets $400 million Surface boost as profits rise

by Keith Andrew

Microsoft’s (MSFT) first earnings report since CEO Steve Ballmer announced his pending departure saw the tech giant surprise Wall Street by posting profits and revenue above expectations.

The firm announced revenue of $18.53 billion for the quarter ending 30 September 2013, up 16 percent from the same period in 2012.

Interestingly, Microsoft also took time out to cite the improved performance of its Surface tablets, which it claims generated $400 million in sales across the quarter.

Surface success

“Our devices and services transformation is progressing and we are launching a wide range of compelling products and experiences this fall for both business and consumers,” said Ballmer of the quarterly report.

“Our new commercial services will help us continue to outgrow the enterprise market, and we are seeing lots of consumer excitement for Xbox One, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, and the full spectrum of Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone devices.”

Surface’s recent success is undoubtedly down to Microsoft to offer significant price cuts in major territories – combined with bespoke promotions by local retailers – but the company will see the sales rise as an encouraging sign as the next batch of Surface SKUs hit the shelves.

Revenue from Microsoft’s Devices & Consumer division – responsible for Microsoft’s Windows business – saw revenue sneak up by 4 percent year-on-year to $7.5 billion.

Overall, profits for Microsoft came in at $5.24 billion, up 17 percent year-on-year, with Microsoft shares jumping by more than 5 percent in after hours trading.(source:pocketgamer

4)Zynga’s share price up 10% after a ‘less terrible than expected’ third quarter

Jeffrey Grubb

Life and the stock market are all about managing expectations, and investors are rewarding social-gaming giant Zynga for surpassing its guidance for its fiscal third quarter.

Zynga’s share price is up more than 10 percent to $3.90 (NASDAQ:ZNGA) today following its quarterly financial results it revealed yesterday. The company reported a moderate loss on a GAAP (generally accepted accounting practices) basis of $68,000. Revenue was down 36 percent year-over-year to $203 million. Zynga did say that it expects to bring in a profit next year, and the company also hired DeNA’s Clive Downie to take over the chief operating officer position.

The better-than-expected bad news coupled with the positive outlook and new hire was enough to give Zynga’s stock a jolt on the NASDAQ stock exchange this morning. That said, some analysts want Zynga to start laying out its plans for the future. Specifically, investors want to know how the publisher plans to transition from shriveling social-gaming powerhouse to a competitive mobile-gaming outfit.

“We believe mobile continues to be a compelling growth opportunity,” R.W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian wrote in a note to investors. “There also remains a sizable opportunity in midcore games, and [Zynga] management indicated there are early signs of success in this market segment.”

In a conference call with investors yesterday, Zynga chief executive officer Don Mattrick emphasized the importance of mobile as part of the company’s five-point plan to return to profitability. That plan also includes focusing on Zynga’s core franchise, producing new hits, shoring up Zynga.com’s network, and cutting down on operating costs.

“Importantly, however, a return to growth will require improved product execution — especially in mobile,” said Sebastian. “And at this point, neither mobile nor the emerging mid-core products are generating adequate volumes.”

In a separate note, Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz came to a similar conclusion.(source:venturebeat
