iPhone 5S(from china.org.cn)

1)Chart of the Week: 7.3% of Danes have downloaded DragonVale

by Jon Jordan

A year ago, we put Backflip’s DragonVale under our Charticle microscope.

Now, one year on, Backflip has created its own version of the Charticle; looking back at two years of the massively successful free-to-play title.

Of course, it’s not been fully transparent.

There’s no mention of how much money the game has generated, other than it’s been in the US top 50 top grossing chart for 750 days.

The fact Hasbro bought 70 percent of Backflip for $112 million in cash during the summer provides its own measure of just how financially successful the game has been, however.

World of opportunity

Yet, in this context, it is significant Backflip lists total downloads at +25 million; not a huge number in the circumstances.

Clearly it has a very loyal and highly monetised audience; one that Backflip says is 48 percent male and 52 percent – another surprise given the assumption its cutesy graphics would skew female.

A final neat touch is the downloads per capita graphic.

As the maths demands, it’s smaller countries such as Denmark (population 5.5 million) and Singapore (5 million) that have the highest percentage of downloads per capita.

Nevertheless, the download levels in Australia (population 22.5 million) and especially the US (310 million) impress more in terms of the absolute numbers.(source:pocketgamer

2)Disney and Sony Animation veterans to direct Angry Birds movie

by Zen Terrelonge

Will use their experience from Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Hotel Transylvania and more.

The Angry Birds movie doesn’t hit cinemas until July 1st 2016, but Rovio is gradually catapulting details out as the months roll by.

We already know The Simpsons writer Jon Vitti, Ice Age producer Catherine Winder, and Despicable Me producer John Cohen are on-board, with Sony Pictures securing distribution rights.

Now, the games studio has announced Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly will direct the 3D CG-animated film.

Kaytis joins with 19 years of experience as Walt Disney Animation Studios where he worked on Tangled, Tangled Ever After, Wreck-It Ralph, Bolt, Paperman and upcoming film Frozen.

Meanwhile, Reilly has worked with Sony Pictures for the past ten years, contributing to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Spider-Man 2 and The Iron Giant.

Mikael Hed, CEO, Rovio, said: “I’m very excited that Fergal and Clay have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise. They are two of the brightest rising talents in animation, and I’m confident we are building the right team to tell the story of Angry Birds and deliver an amazing movie experience to our fans.”

Rovio is already dabbling with animation through its Toons TV platform, which has secured more than one billion views.(source:mobile-ent

3)iPhone 5S apps are twice as likely to crash (and it’s not a big deal)

Rebecca Grant

Scandal! Apps on Apple’s “best iPhone ever” are twice as likely to crash. Everybody freak out.

Or don’t.

A study by mobile app monitoring service Crittercism found that app crashes on the iPhone 5S happen twice as often than on iPhone 5 or iPhone 5C.

Crittercism has monitored hundreds of millions of app launches and found that the typical crash rate for the 5S is around 2 percent, while the 5 and 5C have a crash rate of around one percent.

So yes, “twice as much.” But no, not really a big deal.

Apple’s highly lauded iPhone 5S comes tricked out with a “monster” 64-bit A7 processor. This impressive power enables slo-mo videos and superior audio quality, and of course the device sports iOS 7 – Apple’s latest and somewhat controversial operating system.

The new device and OS unsurprisingly come with some pesky little issues. This tends to happen with any new hardware or software release, but it never fails to get us techies all hot and bothered.

Users have reported problems with the latest iPhone, including problems with messaging, sensor capabilities, battery drain, security, dizziness from the built-in 3D and animation effects, and getting logged out of apps.

AllThingsD first ran the report and spoke with a Crittercism representative who said that the crashes are more likely to occur on the iPhone 5S because developers couldn’t check their apps on the 64-bit chip ahead of time. Apps were designed and tested for 32-bit chips, and the big difference between the two leads to some inevitable glitches.

The crash rates will likely go down as Apple and developers have more time to address bugs.

The iPhone 5S and 5C are selling well, despite limited availability. They generated record-breaking sales on their opening weekend, and Apple expects the fourth quarter (with the holidays) to be a strong one.

Close to 300 million iOS users are now using iOS 7, and a report by software testing service uTest found that not optimizing for iOS 7 could cost app developers big.

So, yes, the iPhone and iOS7 have some hiccups, and yes, apps may crash 2% of the time, but this is hardly enough to cause hundreds of millions of users to defect to another device/operating system.

See? Everything is OK. Take a deep breath, and give your iPhone a hug. It will feel better soon.(source:venturebeat

4)Amazon: F2P success down to play count not play length

by Keith Andrew

What makes the top grossing free-to-play apps stand out against the rest of the freemium market?

Based on cohort data amassed and analysed by Amazon, delivering a successful free-to-play game isn’t about making gamers play for long sessions. Rather, it’s about giving players reasons to come back time and again for short little nuggets.

That was the message delivered by Amazon’s head of content acquisition for mobile in Europe Daniel Winner at the F2P Summit in London, with the need to keep players coming back time and again the focus of his summary.

“44 percent of repeat purchases happen within one hour of a previous purchase,” noted Winner, based on Amazon’s research of player data from its Appstore for Android.

“But it’s not about increasing the stickiness of the game – it’s the number of sessions that the customer visits the game that determines how much they spend.”

Top of the pops

Indeed, comparing the top 50 grossing apps on Amazon’s store to the rest of the freemium market highlighted that, as time passes, the more successful apps generate more play sessions per user.

As a result, those users not only purchase more items than in other games, they’re also happy to spend more on each of those items.(source:pocketgamer
