1)Study finds majority of Americans play browser-based games

Brandy Shaul

Web technology company Goo Technologies, developer of the HTML5 graphics engine Goo Engine, has released the results of its 2013 State of Browser Gaming Index, finding that Americans are becoming more comfortable with browser gaming, but still want more from those browser-based experiences.

The study was conducted by Harris Interactive in September, gathering responses from over 2,000 Americans age 18 or over. Of those respondents, 52 percent say they play browser-based games, whether on Facebook or elsewhere, with single Americans being more likely (62 percent) to play such games than married ones (48 percent).

When asked why they played browser games, 49 percent focused on finances, saying they play browser games because they aren’t as expensive as buying a traditional home video game console.

At the same time, 43 percent said they enjoyed browser games because they don’t require a previous installation of game software, and 25 percent simply enjoy being able to play games across different devices without starting over.

Even as browser games are becoming more widely accepted, 68 percent of male respondents and 50 percent of female respondents say they wished browser-based games worked better. Games in the strategy and shooter genres require the most work, according to respondents, with 24 percent and 22 percent of survey takers wanting better browser-based experiences for both of those game types, respectively.

In an increasingly mobile environment, many respondents expressed an interest in being able to play these kinds of games while mobile, and from a variety of locations:

On the couch – 60%

On a plane – 50%

In bed – 45%

While on the toilet – 34%

On a train – 34%

At work – 25%(source:insidesocialgames

2)iPad has the fastest touchscreen, and Kindle Fire HD beats pricier Android tablets

Dean Takahashi

Apple’s iPad has the speediest touchscreen, and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is surprisingly faster than more expensive Android tablets, according to a new TouchMarks II benchmark survey by app streaming firm Agawi.

The Apple iPad Mini came out on top with a response time of 75 milliseconds, or more than twice as responsive as the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, said Rohan Relan, the cofounder and CEO of Agawi, an interview with VentureBeat. The fourth-generation iPad came out at 81 milliseconds.

Agawi’s TouchScope measures touchscreen responsiveness.

More surprisingly, the new Kindle Fire HD released on Oct. 2 also has a faster touchscreen than the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. The Kindle Fire HD measured at 114 milliseconds, compared to 135 for the Nexus 7 and 168 for the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

“The iPad significantly outperforms all the other devices, but Amazon did well even though its device is $90 cheaper than the Nexus 7 and $160 cheaper than the Galaxy Tab 3,” Relan said.

“This is important because tablets are more often used in gaming and interactive music applications.”

Nvidia’s Android-based game device, the Shield, came in at No. 3 at 92 milliseconds, while the Microsoft Surface Windows RT came in at 95.

Agawi previously made headlines with its debut report on touchscreen speeds when it found that Apple’s iPhone 5 touchscreen was 2.5 times faster than Android devices. In that sense, the iPad’s superiority isn’t a surprise, Relan said.

Relan said his team is still investigating the reasons why the results come out the way they do. He said that Amazon may be willing to sell its hardware at a loss, and so it may have included better touchsreen components in its device.(source:venturebeat

3)25,000 registered developers in, Ouya has 465 games on board

by Matthew Diener

With the platform closing in on 500 apps, Ouya has announced it now has more than 25,000 registered developers on board.

The figure, though undoubtedly a milestone, has no direct bearing on the console’s performance at retail, however, where it’s believed to be struggling.

The NPD Group described US sales in its launch month as “relatively light” – a claim that Ouya founder Julie Uhrman challenged.

“Nobody thinks much about NPD numbers,” replied Uhrman. “We all know they miss critical data including reporting from digital retailers or company sites.”

Eye on Ouya

Ouya’s creators have had bigger hurdles to overcome than supposedly slow launch sales, however, making today’s declaration of developer support a notable one.

We’ve hit 25,000 registered developers, closing on 500 apps http://t.co/6cFQFmpWce Thanks u to everyone who believed! :)

— OUYA (@playouya) October 8, 2013

Ouya upset a portion of its support earlier this summer when controversy surrounding the firm’s Free the Games fund reached a boiling point after it became clear that two games were attempting to take advantage of the fund.

Some developers pulled their games in response to Ouya’s handling of the situation, but others rallied to Ouya’s defense when it updated its Free the Games fund policies.(source:pocketgamer

4) New Amazon Appstore developer program aims to help devs get noticed

By Mike Rose

Amazon today launched a new developer program for its Appstore, through which it says it can help mobile and HTML5 game studios get noticed more easily by consumers.

Those studios that sign up to the Appstore Developer Select Program will receive half a million free mobile ad impressions across the Amazon Mobile Ad Network, special Amazon Coin rewards for their customers, and 25 percent off Amazon Web Services.

To be part of the program, Amazon requires that you exclusively use its In-App Purchasing API, its Mobile Ads API, and its GameCircle social networking system in your games.

Notably, those developers who are already on the Amazon Appstore and have fulfilled the above requiremented needn’t do anything. Amazon says it is evaluating all apps and games, and will provide the program benefits to each game it decides has met the requirements.

These benefits only apply to games that are available on the U.S. Amazon Appstore, and the 500,000 free mobile ad impressions will be delivered for your game within the first five months of app qualification.(source:gamasutra

5)Disney launches Pirates of the Caribbean: Isles of War on Facebook

Brandy Shaul

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been given its own Facebook game in Pirates of the Caribbean: Isles of War. The game is based in the world of Johnny Depp / Jack Sparrow’s Pirates of the Caribbean, and is set in 1740, before the events of the Curse of the Black Pearl film.

Isles of War sees players creating their own fleet, conquering the Caribbean as they encounter various characters from the Pirates lore, including Captain Barbossa and Davy Jones, as well as Jack Sparrow himself.

The game’s story see Captain Jack stealing the player’s ship, and leaving them stranded on a small island. The locals promise to aid our hero in finding Jack, but of course, they want something in return. This begins the game’s city-building, or in this case island-building, gameplay, as players are encouraged to construct new mines, blacksmiths shops, docks and more, all with the goal of growing the island’s power and wealth and freeing the locals from a group of local pirates.

A quest system leads players through the majority of the game’s story, which often deals with the use of a few main resources, including Iron and Lumber. Players can take to the high seas to battle enemy ships to earn more of these resources, or they can wait for them to be produced in buildings on the island.

Naval combat has a simple design, asking players to tap on the screen to send their ship(s) off in that direction. When enemy ships enter the vision cones on either side of these ships, they fire their cannons automatically, without any need for aiming. The player is left to focus on maneuvering their ships to always have the enemies in these vision areas, rather than focusing on actually aiming and firing their shots.

Aside from the game’s quest system and naval combat, players will also spend quite a bit of time actually constructing and upgrading ships, using resources and weapons earned as they play. While the game’s building and production timers can slow down a player’s progress, all tasks can be finished instantly when they’ve dropped under the two-minute mark.(source:insidesocialgames
