1)Apple will sell 6M to 6.5M iPhones this weekend as gadget lovers line up

John Koetsier

Last year when the iPhone 5 launched, it sold five million units in its first weekend of sales. This weekend, Apple could sell as much as 30 percent more iPhone 5S and 5C models, according to one analyst.

“In aggregate, we believe Apple will sell a total of six million to 6.5 million of the two new iPhones this weekend,” Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White said today in a research note.

That’s due to the fact that Apple’s selling two models as opposed to one, of course, but also because, unlike other years, Apple has stopped selling the previous year’s model, the iPhone 5. Previously, Apple had always kept the immediately prior model on the shelf, diverting some sales away from the newest version.

The 5C could be the big seller — not just because it’s cheaper but also because it was made available for preorders on Sept. 13, so it has had a bit more sales runway. Oddly, the 5S was not available for preorders, and White notes that over two million iPhone 5 units were preordered after Apple’s last big phone launch. Of course, that the iPhone 5C is cheaper — and is available in multiple colors — likely won’t hurt its sales either.(source:venturebeat

2)Apple’s iPhone 5 touchscreen is 2.5 times faster than Android devices

Dean Takahashi

Apple’s iPhone 5 is 2.5 times faster at responding to touches than Google Android devices, according to a benchmark test by game and app streaming firm Agawi.

The results confirm what users believe about the devices, and they highlight a feature that is usually left out of technical comparisons.

In its first TouchMarks benchmark test, the iPhone 5 responded to touches at an average time of 55 milliseconds, compared to 85 milliseconds for the iPhone 4. The closest Android device was the Samsung Galaxy S4 at 114 milliseconds.

“Apple trounced the competition,” said Peter Relan, chairman of Agawi. “There is this whole other dimension of responsiveness that Agawi cares about.”

Agawi studied the iPhone 5 and compared it to Android touchscreen smartphones such as the Google MotoX, the HTC One, and the Samsung Galaxy S4. It also compared results for the Nokia Lumia 928 on Windows Phone, which came in at 117 milliseconds. The company started doing the tests as part of its work in delivering Flash-based Facebook games and other apps as interactive streams to iOS devices.(source:venturebeat

3)Data shows iOS users adopting iOS 7 much faster than iOS 6

Brandy Shaul

Just days after the release of Apple’s updated iOS operating system iOS 7, it’s become clear that users are racing to adopt the new OS faster they have for previous versions. Both Fiksu and Tapjoy have found similar results, showing that adoption rates for iOS 7 have been far higher than the adoption rate for iOS 6 during its own launch.

User acquisition company Fiksu has tracked early adoption numbers across millions of iPhones using Fiksu client apps, and has found that just 24 hours after the release of iOS 7, over 28 percent of users had already adopted iOS 7. That’s in comparison to only 18 percent of users who adopted iOS 6 during its first day of availability.

Mobile advertising and publishing platform Tapjoy found similar results among its network-wide data of over 200 million iOS consumers across iPhone, iPad and iPod. According to its findings, iOS 7 has a 22 percent adoption rate, while iOS 6 was at 15 percent adoption 24-hours after its launch.

Tapjoy further breaks down the adoption based on device and region. Over 25 percent of iPhone users have adopted iOS 7, compared to 15 percent of iPad users and 12 percent of iPod users.

North America has the fastest adoption rate at 28 percent of users, followed closely by Latin America and the EMEA at 26 percent and 22 percent each, respectively.

Fiksu is continuing to track adoption rates, which are slowly climbing. For instance, 43 hours after the launch of iOS 7, Fiksu has tracked adoption in almost 36 percent of iPhones, compared to 22 percent for iOS 6 during its same time frame.

Whether you go by Fiksu’s data or Tapjoy’s, the result is the same: users are incredibly interested in trying out the vastly different iOS 7, which comes with a complete visual redesign, automatically updating apps, a Pandora-style iTunes Radio service and much more. 4)User explosion: Boom! Tanks hits 1 million downloads in a week

by Keith Andrew

It’s move on smartphones may still be in its formative stages, but UK publisher Codemasters is keen to trumpet the success it’s enjoyed so far, starting with Boom! Tanks.

The free-to-play release – loosely described by some as ‘CSR Racing, but with tanks’ – has amassed 1 million downloads in its first week of release, with 8 million tanks “blasted to smithereens”.

The publisher has also announced an update expanding compatibility for play to previously unsupported devices, including iPhone 4 and the fifth generation iPod touch.(source:pocketgamer

5)Report: BlackBerry founder considering bid for company

Dean Takahashi

BlackBerry founder Mike Lazaridis is reportedly considering a bid to take over the struggling smartphone maker.

Lazaridis, who stepped down as co-chief executive last year, is talking to private equity firms about a bid for the company, which reported a big loss and announced 4,500 layoffs this week.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported the talks. The New York Times said that Lazaridis has separately approached the Blackstone Group and the Carlyle Group about making an offer. The talks are in a preliminary stage. But the potential for a deal is growing as BlackBerry’s stock tanks further.

On Friday, shares plunged as the company reported quarterly revenue far below analyst expectations. BlackBerry shares listed in the United States fell 17.1 percent to $8.73. The publications could not reach the parties for official comment.

Private equity firms have considered a bid for BlackBerry for more than a year, but the company is in a tough spot, making the private equity firms gun shy about investing money in it.

Lazaridis, who co-founded the firm in 1985, is still one of the largest individuals shareholders.

On Friday, BlackBerry said it expects operating loss between $950 million and $995 million in the second quarter and it would lay off 4,500 employees. It will refocus on enterprise and “prosumer” customers rather than mainstream consumers.

As part of its move away from the consumer market, the company says it will reduce its smartphone portfolio from six phones to four (at this point, there are only two BlackBerry 10 devices on the market). Now that the iPhone and Android are dominating mainstream smartphone buyers, BlackBerry’s only hope is to appeal to the businesses that need its secure services and its few remaining hardcore fans. The company plans to offer two high-end smartphones and two entry-level phones, with each group containing an all-touchscreen device and physical keyboard model.

BlackBerry says it will also offer hardware and software services to other companies. It just announced a new flagship smartphone, the BlackBerry Z30, as well as plans to bring its BlackBerry Messenger service to the iPhone and Android this weekend.(source:venturebeat

6)52 per cent of consumers say mobile sites disappoint

by Phil Tottman

Women generally happier with their mobile brand experience

36 per cent say that lack of functionality on mobile sites and apps is their main usability issue, reports Eptica.

52 per cent of UK consumers revealed that over half of sites they visited on their mobile weren’t optimised for that platform, making it difficult to interact with companies.

It turns out that women are more satisfied with their mobile experience – with 54 per cent saying that the sites they accessed were actually optimised for a mobile compared to 42 per cent of men.

However 38 per cent of women did say that bad optimisation for smaller screens was the number one issue with mobile usability, whereas functionality was the leading bug-bare for 37 per cent of men.

Netbiscuits recently revealed that brands actually ignore 52 per cent of device types when developing for a mobile.

Paul Barnes, VP operations with Eptica UK, said: “Over half of us have smartphones, and tablet use is now mainstream, but it seems that many brands are lagging behind consumer expectations.”

Another issue for 34 per cent of mobile consumers was slow loading speeds. Google found that if a mobile site takes longer than a second to load visitors lose interest – even though the average response time is seven seconds.(source:mobile-ent
