1)Smartphone web traffic exceeds that of device ownership

by Phil Tottman

Almost 100 per cent of all web traffic comes from a mobile in some countries.

The top 15 countries with the highest smartphone penetration have even higher smartphone web traffic, reports 51Degrees.mobi.

Ownership of smartphones in the top 15 countries – led by Denmark, Israel, Spain, Australia and South Korea – averages around 53 per cent.

However the web traffic share from the same 15 countries has averaged at around 90 per cent, displaying that people are using a smartphone to browse the web much more than on feature phones or any other device.

Smartphone traffic from Denmark and Israel, who lead the top 15, is just under 100 per cent.

The US – who currently lead the smartphone shipment market – are down in eighth place with just over 90 per cent of traffic from a smartphone, and just behind is the UK who has stuck fast at ninth place with 90 per cent.

At the tail end of the 15 countries is Norway, who has seen the most similar results between ownership at 67.5 per cent and web usage at 68.9 per cent.

The only country not conforming to this stat is the United Arab Emirates, which showed that even though smartphone ownership is high, actual web usage on their devices is rather low.(source:mobile-ent

2)Very engaged: Xiaomi’s users downloading 26.5 apps per quarter

by Matthew Diener

After adding Google VP Hugo Barra to its payroll last week, the seventh largest Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi reports that its Android app store is encouraging its users to be twice as active as those on the App Store or Google Play.

This line of extrapolation comes from Tech-Thought’s Sameer Singh, who set out to examine a vague quote by Xiaomi’s CEO Bin Lin.

Lin stridently claimed that “Xiaomi’s customers are twice as active on the mobile web as those of other manufacturers” – and after running a quick analysis, Singh found that Lin wasn’t wide of the mark.

Working calculation

According to his data, Singh found that Xiaomi users are downloading 26.5 apps per quarter per device, while iOS and Android users are averaging 13-15.

Singh arrived at his figures by working back from Xiaomi’s earlier announcement that it has seen 1 billion downloads from its app store in the past 13 months, which has led it to become one of the top five app stores in China.

With 17 million active users in the app store, Singh calculates that it sees 5 million downloads per day which then works down to 26.5 app downloads per quarter for each device.(source:pocketgamer

3)Windows Phone annual development fee permanently reduced

By Mike Rose

Newsbrief: Microsoft has significantly lowered the annual fee for its Windows Phone development subscription, following what appears to have been a successful summer promotion for the service.

The company previously held a promotion over the summer, allowing developers to sign up to the Windows Phone Dev Center for $19, down from the usual $99 annual fee. However, following the conclusion of the promotion, Windows Phone general manager Todd Brix announced that the annual fee will stay at $19.(source:gamasutra

4)53 per cent of Brits would not give up their mobile to save money

by Phil Tottman

More people would rather their social life suffered in order to stay within a budget.

More than half of Brits are unwilling to give up their mobile or smartphone contracts to save money, reports Leeds Building Society.

The YouGov survey found that a massive 76 per cent of us would not even allow their home broadband services to suffer, even if they were in the depths of financial despair.

The results have displayed the importance of a connected device to our everyday lives. No longer do we see it as a disposable luxury, but in fact an extension of our day-to-day necessities.

Even our social lives are at risk of being put on the back burner before our trusty devices – as 77 per cent said that they are currently cutting back on entertainment such as cinema tickets and eating in restaurants, and 64 per cent are spending less on going out drinking with friends – as the kids say, WTF!

The 25 to 34 year-old age group were least likely to spend less on their smartphone outgoings, where as the 55 and overs were more protective over their home broadband services.

Gary Brook, head of corporate communications at Leeds Building Society, said: “These results indicate that technology in particular, is increasingly being seen as a necessity rather than an avoidable expense by many people.”(source:mobile-ent

5)Jumping Tail For Kakao: GREE Releases First Game On KakaoTalk (In Korea)

by Dr. Serkan Toto

If you can’t beat them, join them: that’s what GREE probably thought when it allowed its subsidiary in Seoul, GREE Korea, to use a competing platform for distribution of in-house content – a few months after the company’s own platform plans outside Japan were buried.

GREE has (very quietly) released “Jumping Tail for Kakao” on South Korea’s KakaoTalk platform (on iOS and Android) earlier this month. As far as I can see, the casual action title is only available in Korean at the moment.

The game was developed entirely by GREE Korea (which was hit by lay offs in July).

KakaoTalk’s game platform (in its home market) is known to be hugely successful.

So how did the GREE title do in the first 2-3 weeks of release?

App Annie reveals that Jumping Tail peaked on the top free app download ranking on iOS in Korea at #1 and the top grossing ranking at #352. On Google Play, the game’s highest rank in the free download ranking in Korea was #12 (grossing: #281).

Since then, the title dropped off quite a bit in both rankings.

It’s unclear at this point if Jumping Tails will get an international version as well.(source:serkantoto
