1)Plants vs. Zombies 2 downloaded nearly 25 million times (infographic)

Jeffrey Grubb

People seem to love their zombie-fighting vegetation.

Developer PopCap revealed today that gamers have downloaded strategy game Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time (see our review) almost 25 million times. That’s after just two weeks since it launched globally for iOS devices on Aug. 15. PopCap says that’s more than the total lifetime downloads for the original Plants vs. Zombies.

Of course, the colorful sequel has a bit of an advantage when compared to its predecessor. Plants vs. Zombies 2 is free-to-play (with optional paid microtransactions) while the original debuted at $20 on PC and currently sells for $1 on iOS.(source:venturebeat

2)Xiaomi’s Android app store hits 1 billion downloads

by Jon Jordan

App distribution remains an ever-in-flux dilemma.

It’s especially the case in the fragmented Chinese Android market, in which Google Play is banned.

That’s providing plenty of opportunity for carriers, platforms, social mobile apps and OEMs to get into the action.

One such is Android handset maker Xiaomi, which was recently in the news for poaching Android VP Hugo Barra.

Big in games

It’s reporting that app downloads through its proprietary (and pre-loaded) app store have reached one billion.

The store was launched just over a year ago, with average daily downloads up to 5 million.

In term of the biggest category, of course, that’s games with TechNode reporting that revenue from games makes up 60 percent of the total.

In absolute terms, games are generating around $1.5 million (RMB 10 million), although that’s a drop in the ocean compared to the RMB 100 billion Xiamoi makes in annual sales.(source:pocketgamer

3)Gamevil makes its first Companion investment into Korean start-up Relax Games

by Jon Jordan

Having announced an aggressive expansion plan, Gamevil (KOSDAQ 063080) has made its first developer investment.

It hasn’t given hard figures but it has made ‘an equity investment’ into Korean start-up Relax Games.

Set up by the team behind PC MMOG Rohan and Lineage II, Relax is the first participant in Gamevil’s Companion program.

Priming the wick

Relex’s first project is an untitled social-network game that will utilise Gamevil’s Circle social network

“Participating in Gamevil’s start-up support program has instilled confidence through its strong development and publishing know-how,” said Relax’s CEO Il Seung Lee.

“The investment will not only strengthen the quality of our games, but provide a good measure on how developers and publishers can collaborate together.”(source:pocketgamer

4)INFOGRAPHIC: The most expensive apps in the world, ever

by Phil Tottman

From a $200 snow globe to the app reserved for millionaires, here is the software that will make your bank manager rather un-appy!

Apps are arguably the most purchased product in the world today.

From the little freebies we all love, to the $1.99 apps we hum and haw about buying because we deem them expensive.

Out of the 900,000 apps in the Apple App Store, you are bound to find some weird and wonderful treats hiding in the pile – but when it comes to price we don’t expect to be faced with a $999.99 bill for – what is technically – a tiny piece of software.

To download the $1k application, VIP Black, members have to prove that their assets or income exceed £1 million. It is the world’s first premium lifestyle app from iVIP – exactly what we need.

Quite a snazzy little app is the Mobile Cam Viewer, priced at $349.99. This budget-breaker allows users to view and control surveillance cameras, DVR, NVR, video servers and webcams at anytime from anywhere.

We have gone from snob, to security and now to down right stupid. Water Globe is essentially, a $219.99 fake snow globe. This does, well what every other snow globe does – pretty much nothing.

And considering there are a number of free snow globe apps dotted around the App Store, it is not entirely clear why anyone would actually consider buying this.
