1)Chart of the Week: More than 25% of DeNA’s revenue still comes from feature phones

by Jon Jordan

Japanese mobile gaming giant DeNA has just released its Q2 2013 financials.

Sales were up 10 percent to $526 million, with around $80 million of that coming from outside the company’s Japanese heartland.

But demonstrating the perceived ‘otherness’ of the sophisticated Japanese market, it revealed that more than 25 percent of consumption of its MobaCoins still comes from feature phones.

Sizeable minority

This is changing fast, but it was only six months ago that DeNA became a majority smartphone business.

And it’s not the only big publisher in a similar position.

Gameloft still has a strong Java games business, too.

In its Q2 2013 period, it said that its feature phone business accounted of 39 percent of the $142 million of sales it made from April to June 2013.

In other words, while the big global mobile publishers are focused on their free-to-play smartphone business, they’re not dropping their legacy sales.(source:pocketgamer

2)Glu Q2 results: Mobile game developer profits decline

by Phil Tottman

Smartphones account for 94 per cent of revenue.

Last year saw results grow faster than expected, caused by a higher revenue from smartphone games, however in a turn of events the mobile games developer watched its profits slip.

Total Q2 GAAP revenues this year peaked at $24.4 million compared to 29.3 million in the same quarter the previous year – with smartphone revenues hitting $23 million, answering for 94 per cent of total revenue.

GAAP gross margin was 64 per cent which is again a disappointing figure compared to the 70 per cent year-on-year. Yet, although the yearly figures are down, the company is currently revising the financial statements for the year end 31st December 2010, restating its financial statements for years 2011 and 2012 as well as the first quarter of 2013.

The revision increases GAAP and non-GAAP revenues, resulting in gross profit, operating income (loss), net income (loss), per share amounts, adjusted EBITDA (earning before interest, taxes, deprecation and Amortisation) and cash flows during the affected periods being unchanged.

Even with the slight lull in figures and an expected futher decline for the next quarter, Glu still continues to develop its services, releasing new titles including Tons of Guns, and

Zombies Ate My Friends, plus announcing the support of Google Play for its games.(source:mobile-ent

3)Kakao competition sees Com2uS’ Q2 2013 sales down 8% to $18 million

by Jon Jordan

Korean mobile game publisher Com2uS (KOSDAQ: 078340) has announced its financial results for the 3 months ending 30 June 2013.

Revenue was 20.3 billion KRW (around $18 million), down 8 percent year-on-year.

Net income was 3.3 billion KRW ($3 million), down 46 percent.

Everyone’s at it

Breaking out the company’s performance geographically, sales in Korea were down 10 percent year-on-year to 12.1 billion KRW ($10.5 million).

Com2uS said that Korean sales declined as its new games didn’t perform as well as expected.

The Korean market – while booming – is now experiencing strong competition, especially on the vital Kakao Game Platform.

While Com2uS has had some success on Kakao, the top games currently come from the likes of Devsisters, WeMade and CJ E&M.

Looking wider

International sales were down 6 percent to 6.9 billion KRW ($6 million).

However, Golf Star has done well internationally and combined with sales from the 9innings Pro Baseball 2013 franchise, this meant the publisher’s sport games have performed relatively well.

Revenues from previously strong genres such as social title Tiny Farm and RPGs like Heroes War have declined, however,

Pushing on

Looking more broadly, Com2uS put a positive spin on the results, pointing out that its half year 2013 sales were up 38 percent to 42.8 billion KRW ($37.5 million).

It will look to turn around its performance in Q3 2013 with 10 new games, seven of which will be third-party publishing deals.(source:pocketgamer

4)Mobile mover: Namco Bandai opens up new Vancouver studio

by Matthew Diener

With a focus on creating social games, Japanese giant Namco Bandai has just unveiled a new studio in the Canadian city of Vancouver.

The fresh, 30-person outfit is set to work on games designed to run on mobile and browser, with the aim being to expand the publisher’s role in the North American smartphone market.

Indeed, speaking on the office’s opening, Namco Bandai Studios president Hajime Nakatani noted that the North American market is “quite big”, and that there was “room to grow for us”.

Dual play

Nakatani went on to say that Namco Bandai can draw on popular characters from its older games to provide inspiration for the studio’s run on the mobile market, as well as tapping into its profitable stable of Japanese arcade games – many of which are unknown in North America.

Namco Bandai officially opened the studio at a ceremony in Vancouver’s new Centre for Digital Media (CDM), with the centre’s director Richard Smith claiming he’s optimistic about the opportunities the new office will open up for CDM students.

Smith is also optimistic that the relationship between the CDM and Namco Bandai will benefit the Tokyo-based company as well, noting that the studio’s team of locals will “help them design games that North Americans want to play.”(source:pocketgamer

5)Gree’s Modern War sees 600 percent revenue hike

By Kris Ligman

Social and mobile giant Gree reports that it is seeing activity spike heavily during live events for Funzio’s free-to-play iOS and Android game, Modern War.

According to Gree, the publisher saw Modern War logins double and revenues increase by up to 600 percent during live events first launched in January, in which players formed factions and faced off against together in a massive MOBA-styled campaign. Gree reported a $2.3 million in revenue from one such weekend-long event.

It’s an interesting example in driving player engagement in free-to-play titles, something that has worked out well for other games in the past. It’s also notable in that Modern War first launched in 2011, meaning it’s possible for these kinds of community events to spur interest even after the game’s initial release hype has waned.(source:gamasutra
