1)GungHo: Puzzle & Dragons Generated US$113 Million In Sales In April

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Japan’s top smartphone game Puzzle & Dragons is continuing to make serious money for its maker, Osaka-based GungHo.

The company just released its latest financial report, according to which sales hit 12 billion yen in April – this amount currently translates to US$119 million and 1,142.8% more than in

April last year.

Earlier, in January and February this year, GungHo didn’t specify how much Puzzle & Dragons alone generated in sales. It was estimated that just this title made US$54-75 million in January and US$62-86 million in February.

But now, in the company’s earnings announcement, GungHo President Kazuki Morishita revealed how big the contribution of Puzzle & Dragons was in April: US$113 million (Macquarie analyst

David Gibson tweeted the news out in English).

So there is a game in Japan that makes US$113 million on iOS and Android – or US$3.76 million per day.

GungHo’s Incredible Last Financial Quarter

GungHo also says that in the the January-March quarter, sales overall ballooned by 800% to 30.9 billion yen (US$303 million), while operating profit grew 7,400% year-on-year to 18.6 billion yen (US$183 million).

The company’s market cap at the Osaka Stock Exchange currently stands at US$10 billion – which is more than Mobage operator DeNA, GREE, and Zynga combined.

GungHo is now part of Japanese telecommunications powerhouse SoftBank and has announced a 10-for-1 split for the end of June.

Its main title Puzzle & Dragons has over 13 million players, meaning that 10% of all Japanese are playing the game.(source:serkantoto

2)Plants vs. Zombies Adventures hits Facebook on May 20

Jeffrey Grubb

PopCap’s next Plants vs. Zombies game should sprout on Facebook in just 10 days.

The developer revealed today that Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, a more social take on the franchise for Facebook, will leave beta and open to everyone on May 20.

PopCap announced PVZ Adventures in March. It has players building up their city while defending a motor home from waves of the undead. It introduces new mechanics, new weapons, and new social features.

Today at 6 p.m Eastern, PopCap will post a link on its Facebook page that will grant early access to the game for the first 500 people who click on it.

PopCap is separately working on a direct Plants vs. Zombies sequel that will expand on the original’s formula in July. The studio named that game Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time.

3)Amazon thought to be developing smartphone with 3D screen

by Zen Terrelonge

Mythical mobile to arrive in ‘coming months’.

Talk of an Amazon Kindle smartphone blew into town around 18 months ago, but despite belief that the phone would arrive in Q4 2012, no such device has ever been revealed.

Wall Street Journal reports otherwise, however, claiming the online retailer is indeed working on a high end smartphone with a glasses-free 3D display.

Use of retina-tracking tech would create a hologram-like illusion to make it seem as though content is floating above the screen, thus appearing 3D from all angles. Furthermore, the retina feature may also enable eye-based scrolling, a function introduced on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Amazon has already embraced the tablet market through the Kindle Fire and would be well placed to produce a smartphone, given that it has its own distribution channel and the burgeoning
Appstore, which continually receives enhancements to support developers and consumers.

4)4G LTE connections reach 100 million

by Daniel Gumble

163 LTE networks now operating in 70 countries.

Research firm Wireless Intelligence has revealed that there are now 100 million 4G LTE connections across the globe, Mobile World Live has reported.

According to the research specialist, there are now 163 LTE networks operating in 70 countries. Furthermore, these figures are expected to increase to more than 400 networks in 120
countries by the end of 2017.

Operators in countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea and the US have so far been principle drivers of this industry growth, with Wireless Intelligence stating that these nations account for 90 per cent of the international LTE connections market.

“Around 100 LTE networks have launched last year globally and as many are expected to launch this year,” Joss Gillet, senior analyst at Wireless Intelligence, told Mobile World Live.

“Even if the 4G LTE global market is still in its infancy, mobile operators worldwide are eager to replicate the success stories seen in the US where operators have already started turning
the page over the 2G chapter”.

Gillet predicts that there will be in excess of 900 million LTE connections globally by December 2017, reaching one billion in the first half of 2018.(source:mobile-ent

5)Chart of the Week: The close race for second place on Android

by Keith Andrew

At first glance, the fact that – according to Tapjoy – Samsung devices account for more than half of Android’s userbase is worthy of a headline or two.

Anyone who has studied any of the research reports summarised on PocketGamer.biz over the last year or so will know that this is nothing new, however.

In North America and Europe, Samsung’s position as top dog on Google’s platform is well established, even if its share – now hitting 55 percent – is somewhat startling.

The big four

More interesting, however, is the land grab going on for second place.

All of Samsung’s rivals have launched rejuvenated flagships in recent months, most prominently HTC’s One and Sony’s Xperia Z.

Both have managed to gain significant retail space at major chains, but are they actually having an impact on their manufacturer’s share of the pie?

Tapjoy’s assessment suggests their main impact has been to reinforce a status quo – no major player pulling away, no major player falling behind.

Four handset manufacturers now boast remarkably similar market shares on Android – HTC on 8 percent, Sony and LG on 6 percent each, and Motorola on 4 percent.

Interestingly, Amazon is just behind these four on 3 percent share thanks to the Kindle Fire, with the race for second place arguably getting tighter as the months go by.(source:

6)Gree lays off staff at its U.S. studio

By Mike Rose

Japanese mobile gaming giant Gree moved its U.S. headquarters to San Francisco just over a year ago — but now the company has been forced to cut back on its staff numbers at the studio.

Gree COO Anil Dharni told Gamasutra that the company recently realigned its U.S. studio to focus on “the next generation of mobile social games,” and as a result, has laid off staff.

“As part of ensuring that we are operating as efficiently as possible, we have made the difficult decision to reduce our work force,” he said. “The employees leaving today have made great
contributions to our success and we wish them all the best.”

7)Candy Crush Saga dominates a volatile casual gaming market

Jeffrey Grubb

Casual gaming is big business. It’s also an ever-changing landscape in which no market share is safe.

In April, developer King ruled the casual market on Facebook and mobile with its Candy Crush Saga. Meanwhile, former top dogs Zynga and Disney are shedding active users.

“King’s color-matching [puzzler Candy Crush Saga], which debuted last November, now holds the No. 1 ranking in all of our mobile top-grossing charts and is No. 1 by daily active users on
the Facebook platform, while placing No. 2 on our Facebook top-grossing chart behind Zynga’s Farmville 2,” Cowen and Co. analyst Doug Creutz wrote in a note to investors.

Creutz notes that companies like Electronic Arts, DeNA, Gree, Supercell, and Kabam are emerging as market leaders alongside Zynga and Disney. King is the most significant competitor to those more-established industry titans.

“Zynga.com [is] shedding players fast,” said Creutz. “We estimate that the average number of players on Zynga’s homegrown gaming platform dropped by 20 percent during April and is down
33 percent since January.”

Similarly, the Cowen analyst see trouble with Disney, who doesn’t have a top-grossing mobile game in the top 20. This is a big change from when Where’s My Water? was the puzzler capturing the casual zeitgeist.

“Marvel: Avengers Alliance on the Facebook platform is Disney’s sole entry in any of our charts,” said Cruetz. “By contrast, big-media peer Warner Bros. appears to be gaining momentum
by placing in the top 10 on both the iPhone and iPad charts.”

8)Capcom reports $644.3M in digital revenue, up 6.4% quarter-over-quarter

Scott Reyburn

Capcom today reported net sales of 94.1 billion yen ($952.8 million) and 3 billion yen ($30.4 million) in net income for the 2013 fiscal year, which ended March 31, 2013. Compared to the Japanese gaming company’s yearly results in 2012, net income was down in 2013 by 55.8 percent and net sales were up 14.6 percent.

Notable mobile games included Minna to Monhan Card Master, which is distributed on DeNA’s mobile-social gaming network Mobage, continued to show growth, citing the increase in smartphone market penetration as the growth driver. Resident Evil: Outbreak Survive on Japanese mobile-social gaming giant GREE’s platform continuously acquired new users. Both titles “enjoyed membership” eclipsing two million each. Mobile game developer and publisher Beeline’s Smurf’s Village “has securely built stable sales over a long range.”

Capcom’s digital content business, which includes console, mobile and social games businesses, posted revenues of 63.6 billion yen ($644.3 million), a 6.4 percent uptick year-over-year, while operating income fell significantly year-over-year by 45.2 percent to 7.1 billion yen ($71.5 million).

Capcom estimates 97 billion yen ($982.1 million) in net sales and 12 billion yen ($121.5 million) in operating income for the next fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. The company plans to achieve its forecast by directing its development resources to the development of online games (mobile, PC online and downloads for consumer games), which is a growing area, and by launching major titles such as Monster Hunter 4 and Lost Planet 3 focused on the domestic and overseas markets respectively.(source:insidesocialgames
