1)Mobile dominates new game sector investments in Q1

Dean Takahashi

Mobile games have come to dominate investment in new game companies, according to a report compiled by investment bank Digi-Capital on first-quarter investments.

Digital games (or “connected games,” as Digi-Capital calls them) continue to grow as a category in both mobile and online, with the highest rate of investment happening in high-engagement mobile and tablet games. Mobile and tablet accounted for more than 80 percent of value of game industry investments.

Q1 game investments are mostly in mobile

“The top line is that there is a significant connected games investment gap, despite strong underlying growth, exits, and returns,” said Tim Merel, managing director at Digi-Capital, which tracks the game market and handles investment banking for the sector. “It’s something we’re looking at very closely.

Rumors of big investments are circulating. Supercell, maker of Clash of Clans (pictured above)  is reportedly raising more than $100 million at an $800 million valuation.

Merel said that the game investment market has stabilized at levels that are similar to 2012, after a dramatic 56 percent decline from 2011 levels. Investments are happening in mobile/tablet games, enabling technology (such as game middleware), and gamification. Game mergers and acquisitions were robust in the first quarter, non-U.S. acquirers accounting for six of the top 10 game M&A deals this year.

Overall, despite the decline in console game sales, Merel is optimistic for the overall sector. Game revenues are expected to grow to $83 billion in 2016, with 55 percent of that, or $48
billion, coming from mobile and online games.

Q1 2013 investment in games grew 35 percent by value to $191M and declined 4 percent in the number of transactions (40). By value, mobile/tablet game companies dominated with 65 percent share of all game investments in Q1. Enabling technology and gamification accounted for 24 percent. In terms of the number of deals, mobile and tablet game companies were 38 percent, with enabling technology and gamification at 35 percent.

The average transaction size increased 35 percent to $7.3 million. By contrast, average transaction sizes declined last year. Digi-Capital reported that game M&A was above $4 billion in

2012. On a pro-rata basis, Q1 M&A declined slightly by 7 percent in value to $973 million. It grew 33 percent in volume to 28 transactions. Console, PC, mobile/tablet, and massively multiplayer online games accounted for most of the M&A transactions by volume, with average transaction value falling 30 percent for M&A deals to $34.7 million.

Merel figures that game companies are on a two-year cycle for initial public offerings, with the last major IPOs happening in 2011. A fresh round might happen again in 2014, he believes.(source:venturebeat

2)Telltale Games and The Walking Dead win big at IMGAs

by James Nouch

Organisers behind this year’s International Mobile Gaming Awards – which took place in San Francisco alongside GDC 2013 – have lifted the lid on the winners, with some familiar names coming out on top.

The biggest winner of the night was Telltale Games, which took home the Excellence in Storytelling award and the Grand Prix prize for its episodic undead opus The Walking Dead.

As well as some handsome trophies, Telltale was awarded a package of $650,000 worth of media coverage from IMGA sponsor ProSiebenSat.1 Games.

Fireproof Games also took home two prizes, walking away with the Excellence in Visuals award and the People’s Choice Award for The Room.

A hand for the winners

The Gameplay award went to Big Fish Games for Fairway Solitaire, while King’s Candy Crush Saga took the Social Gaming prize.

Henry Smith’s collaborative curio Spaceteam won an Excellence in Innovation award, and WeWantToKnow AS’ DragonBox+ was awarded the Best Serious Game gong.

The jury – which consisted of journalists from 148Apps, IGN, TouchArcade, Joystiq and Pocket Gamer – also gave honourable mentions to 1337 Game Design’s Devil’s Attorney and Six to Start’s Zombies, Run!(source:pocketgamer

3)Salaries are up for game developers but women don’t make as much as men

Jeffrey Grubb

For the sake of all game developers everywhere, let’s hope Notorious B.I.G. wasn’t right when he said: “The more money we come across, the more problems we see.”

If those immortal lyrics hold true, then developers are in for more trouble than they came across last year.

In a major survey, Game Developer Magazine revealed that the average developer salary was up to $84,337 in 2012. That’s an approximate increase of $3,100 from 2011. More than two-thirds of respondents noted that they received a bump in pay in 2012. Meanwhile, 29 percent reported they made the same, and 7 percent claimed a decrease.

In addition to the rise in pay, health benefits rose 15 percent in medical, dental, and vision coverage.

On the fair-pay front, men make more than women in every development job in the survey except for programming. Of all the programmers surveyed, only 4 percent are female.

As common as layoffs seem, they are the one area of the industry that is receding.  While 12 percent of developers experienced layoffs in 2012, that’s actually down 7 percent over the last
three years.

Finally, as much as the press has shifted to cover indie developers, they still don’t make very much money. The average indie only brings in $23,130 a year. That’s actually down from 2011.(source:venturebeat

4)20% of all BlackBerry 10 applications are actually repackaged Android apps

by James Nouch

Martyn Mallick, BlackBerry’s VP for global alliances and business development, has revealed that 20 percent of all BlackBerry 10 applications are actually Android apps.

At the US launch of BlackBerry 10 and the Z10 handset last week, BlackBerry celebrated passing the 100,000 app milestone on its new OS.

But Malick’s comments, made in an interview with AllThingsD, seem to suggest that 20,000 of those apps are, in fact, Android-based.

Android in disguise

BlackBerry has been extremely active in encouraging and incentivising developers to bring their apps to BlackBerry 10. Offering developers the ability to repackage their Android 2.3.3 applications for BB10 is one part of this push.

Repackaged apps are emulated in an Android runtime on the user’s device, although the Z10 drew some criticism at launch for its ability to run these emulated apps smoothly.

Malick notes that the state of Android apps on BB10 is improving, though, explaining that developers such as Amazon are updating their repackaged apps to take advantage of BlackBerry 10 features such as the BlackBerry Hub.(source:pocketgamer

5)INFOGRAPHIC: The world’s largest news consumption study

by Daniel Gumble

INFOGRAPHIC: The world’s largest news consumption study

25-34 year-olds emerge as the biggest news enthusiasts.

BBC World News and BBC.com/news have today (March 26th) lifted the lid on the results of the world’s largest ever study on news consumption habits across multiple devices.

Conducted by InSites Consulting, the study saw over 3,600 owners of digital devices surveyed in Australia, Singapore, India, UAE, South Africa, Poland, Germany, France and the US, in a bid to underastand the growing impact of TV, smartphones, tablets and laptops on people’s news consumption habits.

The study found that tablet owners watch more TV news, with 43 per cent of tablet users saying they consume more TV than they did five years ago, and most saying they use tablets alongside TV.

It was also revealed that the 25-34 year old demographic boasts the keenest news enthusiasts.

TV came out on top as the most popular means by which to consume news (42 per cent), compared to laptops (29 per cent), smartphones (18 per cent) and tablets (ten per cent).

Jim Egan, CEO of BBC Global News, commented: “Avid news consumers are hungry for information wherever they are and expect to stay in touch on all the devices they now own. There’s been speculation for years that mainstream uptake of smartphones, laptops and tablets will have a negative impact on television viewing, but this study has found that the four devices actually work well together, resulting in greater overall consumption rather than having a cannibalising effect.”(source:mobile-ent
