1)Super Hexagon: An example of why you shouldn’t ignore Android

By Mike Rose

It isn’t really worth launching your mobile game for Android. Thanks to fragmentation and piracy, the Google Play store is a minefield — you might as well stick to iOS.

That’s what some developers believe, and Android is regularly snubbed in favor of an iOS-only release, even at a time when the number of Android devices out there is surging rapidly.

Terry Cavanagh launched Super Hexagon on iOS several months ago, and sold more than 10,000 copies in its first three days on sale on Apple’s App Store. Since then he’s been slowly but surely, piecing together an Android version, with hardware fragmentation issues holding it back consistently.

But Cavanagh battled through all of this, and finally released the game via the Google Play store earlier this week. And to his surprise, it was most definitely worth the effort — the game has now sold more than 25,000 copies on Android in just the first four days on sale, easily besting the initial days of the iOS version.

“I’d heard from other developers that Android is a much smaller market than iOS, so yeah, its success has been quite a surprise!” he tells us. “It’s not really fair to make a direct comparison, because nobody had heard of the game when it launched on iOS – but so far, the Android launch has been bigger than the iOS launch, which I would never have expected.”

Anyone who follows Cavanagh on Twitter will know that he’s had numerous problems with getting Super Hexagon to play nicely on every Android device, with the Google Nexus 7 tablet in particular causing such deep problems that he was eventually forced to say that the device would be incompatible with the game.

“I think developing for Android is basically a lot like developing for PC,” he notes. “Even if you can get things working nicely on 99 percent of devices out there, there’s still a good possibility you’ll encounter problems with odd devices, just because of how many different types of Androids are out there.”

Yet despite these issues, the VVVVVV developer hasn’t been put off the platform. “It hasn’t been too bad though, considering,” he adds. “We’ve already managed to fix most of the main device specific issues since launching a few days ago.”

As for Cavanagh’s mobile future, there’s no doubt in his mind that he’ll be aiming for both iOS and Android releases for his next games.

“I think it was well worth the effort,” he says. “I’ll definitely be bringing any future mobile games I make to Android.” (source:gamasutra

2)Android app revs jump 43 per cent

by Daniel Gumble

iOS developers could be losing ground on Android competitors.

Android app revenues could be set to jump 43 per cent, according to a Distimo report.

Distimo’s global survey of app store activity during the past four months of 2012 revealed that Apple’s App Store experienced an aggregated daily revenue increase of 21 per cent, while Android revenues grew by 43 per cent.

However, the news follows reports from earlier this week that more than 435,000 new apps are primed to hit Apple’s App Store throughout 2013.

Figures made available via adeven’s free online tool – apptrace.com – revealed that 559,764 new apps were released into the App Store last year, with November boasting the biggest number of new releases (39,313) and July being the slowest with just 22,483.

“We reviewed App Store results over the past five years and noticed a steady linear increase in the number of App Store apps, indicating that there will be over 435,000 new apps in the App Store by the end of 2013,” said Christian Henschel, CEO, adeven. “Naturally anything could happen to the industry, but we think these numbers are a fair prediction and an indication of the continued growth in the industry.”(source:mobile-ent

3)145 million tablet shipments expected in 2013

by Daniel Gumble

New research indicates that tablets sales will continue to prosper due to price drops and increased competition.

2013 already looks well on its way to becoming a key year for the tablet market, with international market intelligence firm ABI Research predicting global shipments to top 145 million.

The research suggests that price drops and growing competition from companies utilising Windows software will lead to bigger sales.

ABI Research also expects the ever-expanding choice of devices for consumers to play a crucial role in boosting tablet shipments.

Meanwhile, the report indicates an increase in the uptake of Windows tablets set to reach the market over the next 12 months.

Jeff Orr, senior director at ABI Research, commented: “The rate of innovation is slowing as tablet vendors augment their product portfolios to meet the needs of market audiences. The late 2012 launches of Apple’s iPad mini and a variety of slates based on Intel architecture and new Windows operating systems will only begin to show their progress this year.”(source:mobile-ent

4)Mobile apps see greater engagement, monetization from Facebook login

Brittany Darwell

A number of mobile developers are reporting more engagement and better monetization among Facebook-connected users than users who do not log in with their social network account, according to a post on Facebook’s developer blog today.

In December, the company announced that nearly 200,000 iPhone and Android apps connect with Facebook. However, many people still think about the Facebook platform being distinct from mobile.

Although Facebook does offer a vertical platform where apps can be used within the Facebook.com canvas, it’s also possible for Facebook to be integrated horizontally across any other platform, including iOS, Android and the mobile web. What the company is trying to do now is convince developers why they should integrate their apps with Facebook.

Facebook suggests that a socially connected user is a more valuable user. Developers like Wooga, Ludia, Buffalo Studios and others have offered some evidence to show that users who log into their mobile games with Facebook spend more time and money in the apps. However, the social network is simultaneously gaining a reputation for being a less open platform than it portrays. Today TechCrunch reported that Facebook has blocked data access from a mobile social search app called Wonder, and last week the company took some similar measures against mobile voice messaging app Voxer.

Here are the game developer stats Facebook shared in its latest post:

•In Ludia’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, 52 percent of users connect with Facebook, but 70 percent of revenue comes from those users.

•Ludia also says 63 percent of daily players of Family Feud & Friends connect with Facebook. Retention of Facebook users is double the retention of those who sign in with guest mode. These Facebook users contribute 70 percent of total revenue.

•Buffalo Studios’ Bingo Blitz sees 55 percent of its iPad audience connecting with Facebook, and those users contributing 62 percent of total iPad revenue.

•Wooga says users who log into its Diamond Dash game using Facebook are nine times more likely to spend money than players who don’t connect with Facebook.

•For Murka’s Slots Journey, the seven-day retention rate of Facebook users is 322 percent higher than non-connected users. These users are also 214 percent more likely to spend money in the first seven days.

•FreshPlanet says Facebook users spend 35 percent more in SongPop than players who don’t use Facebook to log in. Facebook users also send 70 percent more challenges to each other.

•Storm8 says players who log in with Facebook are three times more likely to return to its games and seven times more likely to spend money in them.

•Nordeus has found Facebook-connected Android users of its TopEleven game are more than three times more likely to become payers and iOS-connected users are more than four times more likely to become payers than users who don’t connect with Facebook. The company says 80 percent of Android payers are Facebook users and 83 percent of iOS payers are Facebook users.

•Dragonplay says Facebook users engage with the games 135 percent more than non-Facebook users. Facebook users are 133 percent less likely to churn after 30 days. When it comes to monetization, Facebook users are 274 percent more likely to convert to a paying users, and on average, Facebook users spend 85 percent more .(source:insidemobileapps

5)Exclusive: Rovio turns publisher as studio opens doors to third parties

by Jon Jordan

Over the years, there have been plenty of rumours that Angry Birds developer Rovio will move into publishing.

Certainly, sources confirmed that it was negotiating with various developers in 2011, but nothing ever came of that initiative.

Now, however, it’s been confirmed that Tiny Thief from Spanish developer 5 Ants has been signed up by Rovio.

The 2D sneaky puzzler has a May release date pencilled in.

Smart moves

The news follows industry chatter late in 2012 that Rovio was again talking to a wide range of developers, looking for content to publish.

Then, our sources couldn’t confirm any signed titles.

Of course, given its status as the world’s most popular games company – in December its games had 263 million monthly active users – a move into publishing makes complete sense for Rovio.

It has a huge audience of people who love its games, so assuming it can select equally high quality titles to Angry Birds, there’s a massive potential to get them engaged in new content and characters.(source:pocketgamer
