1)$99 iPhone thought to be in production

by Zen Terrelonge

Cupertino firm falls victim to rumour again, with low end device expected for late 2013.

The iPad Mini was once a product of conjecture, though soon became very real, with Apple launching the 7.9-inch tablet to appease consumers on a lower budget while competing with the likes

of Amazon’s Kindle Fire line.

Apple is now thought to be working on a low end iPhone, which is expected to be priced at between $99 to $149, according to Bloomberg. Cheaper components like plastic are thought to be used

in order to achieve the price cut, rather than costly metal and glass materials.

The move would see the firm branch away from its traditional $500+ handsets, while the entry-level device could be released in late 2013, which has become the usual time Apple chooses to

launch new products.

The Cupertino firm has been accused of lacking innovation since the passing of Steve Jobs, but the company still sold 5m handsets in its debut weekend and shifted more than two million in

the same period when the device hit China.

Meanwhile, the Apple App Store crossed 40bn downloads and 500m active user accounts this week, while paying iOS developers more than $7bn.(source:mobile-ent)http://www.mobile-

2)WinPho shipments to speed past BlackBerry and Symbian by 2014

by Zen Terrelonge

Microsoft handset movements to rise from 30m in 2012 to 138m in 2016.

Portio Research has forecast more dark times for ailing RIM, with Microsoft set to ship more Windows Phone-powered smartphones than BlackBerry in 2014, while they will overtake Nokia’s

Symbian this year. Of course, the latter is perhaps unsurprising, given that Nokia has adopted WinPho for its flagship Lumia line.

WinPho smartphone shipments are estimated to have reached 30m last year, and are expected to hit 138m for 2016, which will see the OS in third place behind Android and iOS from 2014

onwards.

Android secured a 54 per cent share of Western European shipments by OS in 2012, rising slightly from 50 per cent, while iOS increased from 23 per cent to 24 per cent. Meanwhile, BlackBerry

declined from 14 per cent to ten per cent year-on-year, as WinPho grew from one per cent to seven per cent.

When observing Eastern Europe, Android leads again to rise from 53 per cent in 2011 to 61 per cent in 2012, while Symbian fell significantly from 23 per cent to seven per cent.

iOS repeated the Western European performance in the East with a marginal climb from 12 to 13 per cent, though BlackBerry dropped from 11 to seven per cent as WinPho leapt from one to 11

per cent.

Huawei earlier debuted its first Windows Phone handset at CES, which boasts 20 days of standby time, while RIM is set to release its BlackBerry 10 OS at the end of the month, something of a

last stand against the competition.(source:mobile-ent)http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/winpho-shipments-to-speed-past-blackberry-and-symbian-by-2014/020269

3)Onavo analyzes top 25 grossing iPhone games

Scott Reyburn

Active usage data for the top mobile apps is generally under lock and key by the developers. Here at Inside Mobile Apps we post weekly articles that take a look at the top grossing (as well

as paid and free) apps charts for iOS and Android. Mobile app developers want to not only see who’s on the list, but know how to get to the top of the list.
Onavo, a company that develops consumer apps that track data usage for users, took a look of their own at the highest-grossing games. The company wanted to see if there was a correlation

with the top games successfully generating revenue such as Clash of Clans, Castle Age, and Modern War, and how those titles stack up against each other when user base is factored in.

To accomplish this, the Tel Aviv-based company looked at the usage for the top 25 grossing iPhone games in the U.S. of November 2012. They looked at the market share, in which Onavo said is

the percentage of their U.S. iPhone users that use the any of the top 25 games. Onavo also calculated average engagement and the relative value of its users, which is represented by a

scoring system based on average revenue per user (ARPU). The chart below takes the percentage of users actively playing a particular game and the rank for each game on the top grossing apps

charts, and then Onavo took those numbers to estimate the strength of the ARPU for each title.

Games with the largest market share were Angry Birds Star Wars with 3.9 percent, Subway Surfers with 3.5 percent and Bike Race Free with 3.4 percent, even though none of the titles ranked

higher than seven. Onavo found that Applibot’s RPG card battler Legends of Cryptids and Cygames developed Rage of Bahamut have the highest ARPUs despite both having small market shares.

Rage of Bahamut has done so well, Japanese mobile-social gaming juggernaut DeNA paid $92 million for a 20 percent share in Cygames and the game has been consistently at the No. 1 spot on

the U.S. top grossing Android apps chart for months

Onavo is known for its two free apps, Onavo Extend and Onavo Count, for iOS and Android. Extend allows a user to compress their wireless data, saving the user money while also providing

insights into data usage. Count grants the user the ability to see data usage on an individual app basis.

Onavo have single-digit millions of users using their suite of apps, so this allows the company to look into daily mobile traffic for a slew of apps. Also, Onavo’s apps are made for

consumers and the company doesn’t work directly with developers. This means Onavo can make active usage for particular apps public without the repercussions of having a developer no longer

working with them, which would be the case for mobile analytics companies such as Flurry.(source:insidemobileapps)http://www.insidemobileapps.com/2013/01/09/onavo-analyzes-top-25-

4)Chinese mobile game market up 91% in 2012 to over $500 million

by Jon Jordan

Mobile games only make up a small slice of the Chinese games market. But it’s the fastest growing sector with growth during 2012 estimated at 91 percent.

In contrast, the growth rate of the overall games sector, as detailed in the China Game Industry Report 2012, was 35 percent.

In terms of value, it’s calculated that the sales of mobile games accounted for RMB 3.2 billion (over $500 million) during the year.

That works out at 5.4 percent of the $9.7 billion (RMB 60 billion) Chinese games market, which is dominated by online games (94.5 percent), with retail console games accounting for a mere

0.1 percent.

Bigger, better

Figures from Beijing-based company iResearch suggest that 2013 will continue that momentum.

It predicts the Chinese mobile games market will be worth around $850 million (around RMB 5.2 billion), up 70 percent compared to 2012.

If fulfilled, this would see China accounting for around 15 percent of the global mobile games market of $5 billion.

Significantly, western-developed games such as Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and Fruit Ninja dominate its paid charts.

Further estimates suggest that by 2015, China could make up 20 percent of the world market, worth $2.2 billion.(source:pocketgamer)

5)Microsoft: Windows Store passes 100 million app downloads

by Keith Andrew

Microsoft has announced that cumulative sales of Windows 8 – including brand new machines running the OS and upgrade licenses for existing devices – have hit 60 million.

In post made on the company’s Windows blog, Microsoft communications manager Brandon LeBlanc said the firm’s in-house numbers suggest the new OS is currently enjoying a “similar sales

trajectory” to that of Windows 7.

The numbers game

“We have seen a significant increase in the number of Windows 8 certified systems since general availability at the end of October,” added LeBlanc.

“There are now more than 1,700 certified systems for Windows 8 and Windows RT.”

The news comes as the spotlight is cast upon both Windows 8 and Windows RT at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, with Qualcomm having devoted a portion of its keynote at the event to showcasing Windows

RT tablets and Windows Phone 8 devices from Nokia and HTC – all equipped with Snapdragon processors.

More important for developers, however, is Microsoft’s assertion that the Windows Store – which pushes apps across both Windows 8 and Windows RT – is taking off.

“This week we also highlighted strong growth in developers building for Windows 8,” concluded LeBlanc.

“Since the opening of the Windows Store the number of apps has quadrupled and we passed the 100 million app download mark – just two months after general availability.”(source:pocketgamer
