1)Study: Europeans Quickest To Adopt iOS 6, Overall Updates Growth Continues

Darrell Etherington

We’ve got some new and interesting numbers to share about iOS 6 adoption three weeks after launch, from a couple of different sources, both of which show users continue to update to the new mobile OS from Apple. There are also some interesting differences depending on region, with some countries lagging far behind the U.S. in terms of adoption and some surging far ahead.

First, from Chitika, the news that iOS 6 adoption has climbed to just a hair shy of 68 percent on iPhone devices, based on a snapshot taken October 10 of the traffic coming through millions of ad impressions on Chitika’s network. The iPad is at 51 percent running iOS 6, passing the tipping point of more than half of all users, and the iPod rose to just over 42 percent.

Chitika thinks that part of the reason behind the differences might be the overabundance of older devices still in use in the iPod segment that can’t upgrade to iOS 6, whereas all but first-generation iPads are currently compatible, and iPhones enjoy a quicker turnover cycle with consumers thanks to carrier upgrade incentives. Overall, iOS 6 adoption sits at 58.88 percent, according to Chitika’s data.

The numbers from Chartboost paint a slightly different picture. Overall, they see iOS 6 adoption sitting at just under 50 percent. That’s still an improvement from when it showed growth nearly stalling last week, but considerably under Chitika’s picture. But both continue to show an upwards trend.

In addition to looking at overall OS version adoption, Chartboost also broke down country-by-country uptake, and that showed some interesting variances depending on where users are in the world. Top iOS 6-adopting nations include Italy (65 percent), Germany (62.3 percent), the Netherlands (60.6 percent) and the UK (57.6 percent). On the other end of the spectrum, China is among the lowest adopting countries, with just 24.5 percent on iOS 6. You can see a number of other nations in the chart below.

One more chart from Chitika below shows how various countries stack up relative to the U.S. The geographical iOS 6 adoption breakdown provides an interesting look at where users are more eager to be on the latest version, but other factors like device distribution and access to reliable Wi-Fi connections could be at play.(source:techcrunch

2)ChangeWave: iPhone 5 selling at record rates based on buying intention; consumers don’t have a problem with Apple Maps

Scott Reyburn

A new survey published today by 451 Research/ChangeWave Research revealed that the iPhone 5 is set to sell at a “record” pace based on buying intention, not actual purchases.

The September survey asked 4,270 North American consumers how likely they were to buy an iPhone 5 in the future. Results showed that one in three people, 32 percent, said they’re likely to buy Apple’s fifth generation iPhone, with 19 percent saying “very likely” and 13 percent saying “somewhat likely.” Compared to results from a similar question in an October 2011 survey from the Bethesda, Md.-based research firm, the iPhone 4S launch saw 10 percent of consumers were “very likely” and 11.5 percent were “somewhat likely.”

Despite the survey focusing on purchasing intention rather than actual sales, the iPhone 5 has already been selling at a record mark over the iPhone 4S, with more than 5 million iPhone 5′s sold in its first three days, which outpaced the 4 million sold for the iPhone 4S.

The survey also posed the question to its participants, who already upgraded to iOS 6 or purchased an iPhone 5, whether the new Apple Maps app was a problem. 90 percent of users said it was “no problem at all/haven’t experienced any problem,” even though Apple has publicly apologized about its Maps app. The other 10 percent of people broke down into 3 percent saying it was a “very big problem,” six percent saying “somewhat of a problem” and one percent saying “not much of a problem.” Contrasting the iPhone 4′s antenna and reception issue in the summer of 2010, a ChangeWave survey in 2010 showed that seven percent of new iPhone 4 owners saw the issue as a “very big problem,” 14 percent as “somewhat of a problem,” 14 percent as “not much of a problem” and 64 percent as “no problem at all/haven’t experienced any problem.”(source:insidemobileapps

3)iPad Mini: 16 options from 8GB to 64GB, prices from $250 to $650

John Koetsier

iPad Mini models and prices have been revealed by someone with access to the internal system of Europe’s largest electronics retailer, Media Markt.

According to the screenshot, there will be 16 different iPad Mini configurations, starting at an 8GB WiFI model for approximately $250 U.S., rising to a 64GB version with cellular — presumably including 4G LTE connectivity as well as 3G.

The prices are an interesting comparison to an iPod Touch, which starts at $299 for 32GB, an iPad2, which starts at $399 for 16GB, and the newest retina iPad, which begins at $499 … all of which will force consumers to think hard about the exact mix of portability and product they want when purchasing. And they provide Apple a tablet price point at least within shouting range of Amazon’s we-sell-at-cost Kindle Fire, at $159.

But, in a very Apple-esque move, they are not aggressively challenging the $200 mark.

Here are the models, which anyone who’s looked at the current iPad versions will recognize. For each I’ve roughly translated the price from Euros to U.S. dollars, minus Germany’s 19 percent value-added tax.

4)After 97 Days: LINE Birzzle Hits 10 Million Downloads

by Dr. Serkan Toto

NHN Japan has announced that LINE Birzzle, the first social game released on the LINE platform, reached 10 million downloads worldwide.

Developed by Korea-based Enfeel, the title hit iOS and Android on July 4 this year and managed to rack up 2 million users in 24 hours.

LINE Birzzle needed just 97 days in total to get to the 10 million mark.

It is available for free (iOS, Android) bur also comes in a paid version (for US$1.99) dubbed Line Birzzle Plus (iOS, Android).

The game is obviously a big success and testament to LINE’s power (the app has over 60 million users currently), but I still remain bearish on the possibility of LINE to become a platform for social games (or most other forms of content, for that matter).

For example, inside Japan, I am still not seeing a mass exodus of social game companies from Mobage or GREE to LINE – far from it, actually. But that’s exactly what’s needed to become a “platform”.

NHN Japan itself says that LINE will see 10 new games (first and third party) by the end of this year.(source:serkantoto

5)Puzzle & Dragons: Japan’s Most Popular Platform-Free Social Game Gets A TV Spot [Social Games]

by Dr. Serkan Toto

Tokyo-based GungHo, maker of Japan’s most successful platform-free social game Puzzle & Dragons, is ready to invest more in marketing their flagship title.

Puzzle & Dragons isn’t using the Mobage or GREE networks but has racked up 1.5 million users so far – in Japan only, and until late September on iOS only (where the game was launched in February this year).

To give the game an extra boost, Puzzle & Dragons will be advertised on national TV in Japan starting Monday, October 15. GungHo says there will be 15- and 30-second versions of the spot that is embedded below (in its longer version).

As I previously mentioned, Japan is the only country in the world where social games are being advertised on national TV, “at scale” and during prime time.

Puzzle & Dragons in English is expected to launch next month.(source:serkantoto
