1)Hey iPad: 7-inch slates will take 32% of this year’s market

By Kevin C. Tofel

An estimated 126.6 million tablets will be sold in 2012 — up 56 percent from 2011 — and of those, nearly a third won’t be 9.7-inch iPads. Instead says IHS iSuppli, 41.1 million smaller slates in the 7-inch form factor will be sold this year, accounting for 32 percent of all tablet sales. A marginal amount of 5-inch devices, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Note, will comprise the rest of the market.

Apple’s iPad sales will still be growing, but it’s clear there’s an opportunity in small slates. And iHS iSuppli points this out, suggesting that “the 7.x-inch category will be helped by the launch of lower-priced tablets in that size segment, along with what is widely believed will be a product offering from Apple later this year for a smaller iPad.”  I suspect that if Apple does launch a smaller iPad, the 7-inch segment will be even higher than the forecast because it’s clear that there’s a market for small slates.(source:gigaom

2)iPhone 5 pre-orders pass 2m in 24 hours

by Zen Terrelonge

Doubling the efforts of the 4S.

iPhone 5 is the tech buzzword of the moment, and Apple says the device notched up more than two million pre-orders in a day.

It doubles the one million strong advanced demand for the iPhone 4S and more than triples the 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders.

Demand is currently exceeding the initial supply and many devices aren’t likely to arrive to buyers until October, despite a September 21st release date.

Philip Schiller, senior VP of worldwide marketing, Apple, said: “iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal.

“iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

The jury is out on whether Apple can maintain its popularity with such little innovation, but the hunger for the fruity devices seems to be insatiable at the moment.(source:mobile-ent

3)85 per cent of phone users browse by mobile

by Tim Green

85 per cent of phone users browse by mobile

Global survey confirms phone as the primary channel to the web.

Ad network BuzzCity, which specialises in serving ads to users in emerging markets, has just released its latest quarterly survey. And it proves emphatically that the world’s new web browsers are surfing from mobile devices.

It found 85 per cent of those surveyed prefer to use a mobile to browse the internet, and that 11 per cent use their mobiles for surfing at home instead of PCs.

Where possible they are surfing with multiple devices. Six per cent also surf with PC and 0.48 per cent with tablets.

This trend should accelerate as 27 per cent plan to buy a PC and 11 per cent a tablet within the next 12 months.

Dr KF Lai, CEO of BuzzCity, said: “Our latest user survey has brought to the fore how integral mobiles are to consumers lives today – regardless of age or occupation.  There is a strong preference for mobiles as the personal device that is connected 24/7, and that complements the PC or tablet experience.

“So for marketers to take advantage of this consumer behaviour we would recommend considering all of these multiple platforms when it comes to campaigns and products, however keep in mind mobile first.”

By the end of August 2012 the BuzzCity network had served 131.5 billion banners, which surpassed its figure for whole of 2011 (126 billion).

The BuzzCity user survey questioned 10,800 people across 71 countries.(source:mobile-ent

4)Gree devours dinosaur mobile-game developer App Ant Studios

Dean Takahashi

Japanese mobile social network Gree has acquired mobile-game developer App Ant Studios as it continues an ambitious expansion within the U.S.

The acquisition is the first since Gree absorbed mobile social-game maker Funzio for $210 million in May. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The agreement is part of Gree’s goal of hitting a billion consumers worldwide as it grows mobile releases on its Gree platform, which cross promotes games and adds social elements to them.

San Carlos, Calif.-based App Ant Studios worked with Gree earlier this year to develop the Android title Dino Life. The American company will now become part of Gree’s team. App Ant’s four founders will take leadership roles in the game development and engineering teams.

“The team at App Ant Studios has continually impressed us with the quality of its engineering, art, and overall product,” said Naoki Aoyagi, chief executive of Gree International, the U.S. subsidiary of Gree. “They share the same strong passion Gree has for mobile social gaming, and we genuinely respect their dedication to evolving the gaming industry. With our constantly growing and evolving mobile-game market, having such exceptional talent on board to build great experiences for the latest hardware is a huge priority for us.”(source:venturebeat

5)Apple shakes up user identification in iOS 6

by Keith Andrew

Apple is set to realise its plans to phase out the use of UDIDs with the launch of iOS 6, with updated OS set to boast a user tracking tool not tied to specific devices.

Those with access to the platform’s beta are reporting UDIDs are to be replaced by what’s been called the Advertising Identifier.

The tool is to be mandatory for all advertising networks operating on Apple’s platform in the future, though it’s implementation is to be rolled out rather than forced from day one.

Unique solution

“iOS 6 introduces the Advertising Identifier, a non-permanent, non-personal, device identifier, that advertising networks will use to give you more control over advertisers’ ability to use tracking methods,” detailed Apple.

“If you choose to limit ad tracking, advertising networks using the Advertising Identifier may no longer gather information to serve you targeted ads.

“In the future all advertising networks will be required to use the Advertising Identifier.”

The shift away from UDIDs to a non-permanent solution was first hinted at back in June.

Who are you?

Interestingly, the new system will allow users to ‘limit ad tracking’.

The exact ramifications of this change for the ad networks is yet to be made clear, though clearly any alteration to the amount of user data they’re able to pool – and the nature of that data – could have a major impact on how they operate.

On a user level, limiting ad tracking will result in a lack of targeted, or relevant, ads being delivered to their device, with generic spots pushed out instead.(source:pocketgamer
