1)400 million iOS devices sold, 700k apps — 90 percent of which see downloads every month

Kathleen De Vere

Apple had sold more than 400 million iOS devices as of June 2012 according to CEO Tim Cook. Cook made the announcement during the iPhone 5 launch event today at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. The numbers put Apple neck-and-neck with Android, which according to a Sept. 12 tweet from Google senior vice president Andy Rubin, has seen more than 500 million device activations to date.

Cook also revealed there are now more than 700,000 apps in the App Store, 250,000 of which are designed specifically for the iPad. The average iTunes App Store customer uses more than 100 apps, and that 90 percent of the apps found in the iTunes App Store received new downloads every month — a statistic likely designed to assuage developer’s concerns over discoverability in the notoriously crowded App Store.

While the information does mean that even apps far off the charts are able to generate a few downloads every month, the vast majority of App Sore downloads belong to the apps fortunate enough to appear on the highly visible top ranked paid, free and grossing app charts. Discoverability issues in the iTunes App Store have meant that some developers employ multi-million dollar app marketing budgets to ensure their apps are found. In the past, iOS developers have also tried to game the system through offer walls and download bots.

Later in the presentation, Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services Eddy Cue revealed the company has integrated Facebook and Twitter into the iTunes App Store, an improvement likely designed to improve discoverability through social media.(source:insidemobileapps

2)Apple Officially Reveals The iPhone 5: LTE, 4-Inch Retina Display, New A6 Chip, Lighter Than iPhone 4S

Chris Velazco

And just like that, months and months of breathless speculation have finally come to an end. Apple’s Phil Schiller has just officially announced the new iPhone 5 at the company’s massive press event here in San Francisco, less than a year since its predecessor was unveiled.

Some of the news won’t come as much of a shock considering the sheer volume of rumors and leaks lately (even Apple let some details slip earlier today) — I’m going to resist the temptation to pontificate on every new feature as it’s revealed (for now, anyway), so let’s get right down to it.

The iPhone 5

■We can finally put the debate to rest — Apple’s newest mobile juggernaut is called the iPhone 5 (despite actually being the sixth iPhone to hit the market). It’s 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S, 18% thinner, and crafted out of (what else?) glass and aluminum.

■Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 will begin on Friday, September 14, and the device will ship to lucky consumers starting on September 21. As usual, the device will be available in 16, 32, and 64GB models, which will cost $199, $299, and $399 respectively with a two-year contract from AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint.

■The long-rumored (and handsome) two-toned design is indeed legitimate, as is the new iPhone’s larger 4-inch Retina Display. And yes, that 16:9 display runs at 1136 x 640 with five rows of icons.

According to Schiller, it’s “the most accurate display in the industry” because the touch sensors are embedded in the display as well.

■As expected, Apple has also unveiled a brand new chipset for the iPhone 5: the A6, which Schiller says is a full two times faster than the A5 chip in the iPhone 4S

■The iPhone 4S’s battery life wasn’t anything to write home about, but the iPhone 5 seems equipped to do much better — 8 hours of 3G talk time, as well as 8 hours of 3G and LTE web browsing to be precise.

■The iPhone’s audio system has been bolstered with a smaller (but improved speaker). There are also now three microphones in the mix: one on the front, one on the back, and another on the bottom.

■That oft-rumored miniature Dock Connector is real: it’s all-digital, has eight pins and it’s called “Lightning.” Yes, there’s an adapter for it, but no word yet on exactly what it will cost you.(source:techcrunch

3)Apple Shows Off Time-Shifted GameCenter Multiplayer With Real Racing 3

Darrell Etherington

Apple demoed Real Racing 3 on stage today with the help of games publisher EA. The new racing game, arriving later this year for the iPhone 5, showed off terrific new graphics that looked very much like they could hold their own next to console games. It’s also capable of an impressive asynchronous multiplayer mode that shows serious attention to how gaming works on the iPhone, and how it differs from living room video game play.

The asynchronous mode allows users to challenge their friends through game center to a race, and then play them later via time-shifting. It looked terrific in the demo, and the later player was even able to hit the car of the other player he was racing against, offline, after the initial run has been completed.

This could make for a drastic change in mobile multiplayer, since it complements perfectly the style of play of mobile gamers who like a casual experience they can pick up and put down on their own schedule.(source:techcrunch

4)Apple powers 31 per cent of mobile ad impressions

by Zen Terrelonge

Makes up more than 50 per cent when combined with rival Samsung.

Millennial Media’s September report analyses Q2 ad impressions across the top 20 mobile phones, top ten app categories, and top five tablets.

Apple was the biggest brand and accounted for 31 per cent of impressions, while the iPhone was the leading mobile device.

Meanwhile, Apple’s foe Samsung was the second largest driver of impressions and generates more than 50 per cent of the total when combined with its US rival.

However, despite the success of Apple, Android accounts for 46 per cent of impressions when analysed by operating system, ahead of the 34 per for iOS, 15 per cent for BlackBerry and four per cent for Windows Phone.

The rise of smartphone ownership meant the devices accounted for three-quarters of all impressions, an eight per cent rise year-on-year.

Unsurprisingly, the iPad led the tablet market while 95 per cent of tablet impressions were made via wi-fi, suggesting users are reluctant to take out 3G/4G contracts and prefer the security of indoor use.(source:mobile-ent

5) Zynga brings two mobile titles over from Japan to North America

Mike Thompson

Zynga today launched its mobile social role-playing game Montopia for both iOS and Android devices; the company also revealed Ayakashi: Ghost Guild (another mobile social RPG) will soon be available on both platforms.

Both Montopia and Ayakashi were released as Japan-only titles in early 2012 by Zynga Japan. Montopia is a free-to-play card-collecting/monster-battle game where players journey across the eponymous land and seek to figure out what happened to it. As they progress, the players fill a “Monstapedia” of creatures they find and fuse together to increase their attributes. Ayakashi, meanwhile, tells the story of exorcists investigating the mystery of some powerful legendary creatures called the Ayakashi. Players battle and capture ghosts, turning them into friendly demons (called Shikigami) they can use to fight against rival exorcists.

Mobile games using card-collecting and monster battles have proved incredibly lucrative in recent months, even here in North America. Mobage’s Rage of Bahamut regularly dominating the charts of top-grossing apps for both Android and iTunes. As was the case with many developers making mobile games in Japan, Zynga was affected by the recent ban of kompu gacha mechanics.(source:insidesocialgames
