《Words With Friends》目前在Facebook平台的MAU则高达1410万,iOS游戏《Scramble With Friends》在应用营收榜单居于第28名。

5)Pew Research

1)Android surges as iOS slows — comparing the growth of Android to iOS

Kathleen De Vere

On September 5, Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt revealed the Android operating system is now seeing 1.3 million activations a day and that there have been more than 480 million total Android device activations. Impressive numbers, but what does it mean for the growth of the Android platform relative to iOS?

Although the latest figure puts Android firmly ahead of iOS in terms of total numbers of devices activated, our readers will remember that Apple’s last official update came in July when CFO Peter Oppenheimer reported that more than 410 million iOS devices had been sold to date.

So while it’s hard to judge just how far ahead Android is, the numbers are still  interesting given the fact that just nine months ago, Android was lagging quite far behind iOS in terms of the total number of activated devices. During its January Q4 earnings call, Google reported it had seen 250 million Android devices activated, and four days later Apple reported it had sold over 67.8 million iOS devices during its holiday quarter, bringing the total number of devices sold to more than 315 million.

Based on the period updates Apple and Google have provided, Inside Mobile Apps has plotted the growth of both operating systems in terms of the total number of devices sold/activated.

As you can see, Android’s growth has been particularly explosive over the past year, while iOS’ platform growth has begun to level out. Of course, total devices sold doesn’t tell us much about the actual usage or market share for either platform, but it does provide some context to both companies’ updates — something that is particularly relevant given the fact that Apple is likely to announce how many iOS devices it has sold to date during next week’s iPhone 5 launch event. We’ll be watching the event closely to see if iOS sales are keeping pace with Android or if they’re falling further behind.(source:insidemobileapps

2)Amazon revamps Kindle with cheaper 7” version, $299 9” HD Model

Kathleen De Vere

As widely anticipated, Amazon has refreshed its popular Kindle Fire tablet, revealing a revamped 7 inch model and a new, more powerful 8.9 inch HD model.

Unveiled today at Amazon’s Los Angeles press event, the updated Kindle Fire keeps the original’s 7 inch display and boasts a new, faster processor which will boost performance by 40 percent according to Amazon, twice the RAM of the original model and a longer battery life. The new Kindle Fire will retail for $159 when it ships on September 14, strategically undercutting the price of Google’s fast-selling Nexus 7 Android tablet, which costs $199 for the 8 GB model.

Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HD is 8.9 inches with a 1920 x 1200 display. Physically, the new tablet is 8.8 mm thick and weighs in at 20 ounces. The processor is a TI OMAP 4470, which Amazon claims can process 50 percent more operations per second than the standard Kindle’s Tegra 3 chip. Amazon has also added stereo speakers and dual band Wi-Fi antennas. The Kindle Fire HD only comes in a 16 GB model. It will cost $299 and a 4G LTE model will also be available for $499. Data plans will cost $49.99 per year and will cap at 250MB of data per month. The Kindle Fire HD will ship on November 20.(source:insidemobileapps

3)Ice Cream Sandwich lives on 20.9 per cent of Android devices

by Zen Terrelonge

Adoption up by almost double in two months.

Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS rolled out in November last year, and three months down the line it had only reached one per cent of Android devices.

But seven months later and ICS has penetrated 20.9 per cent of the little green robot’s tech, almost double the 10.7 per cent in July.

Meanwhile, Jelly Bean has a minor adoption with just 1.2 per cent, though it’s garnered a faster rate than ICS to reach it in just two months.

Of course, Jelly Bean’s share will increase once Google allows native installs, a feature currently saved for its Google Nexus 7 tablet.

Gingerbread is still the mightiest update on the market  with 57.2 per cent and looks to retain its dominance for sometime, but the ICS growth means it’s fallen by around seven per cent.(source:mobile-ent

4)Zynga announces Gems With Friends

Emanuel Maiberg

Zynga today announced the global launch of Gems With Friends, a free puzzle game for iOS and the sixth addition to Zynga’s “With Friends” franchise.

In the game players have three two-minute rounds to drag and drop numbered gems as fast as they can to match three in order to score points. Players are also given one free Power Gem for each game which they can use as a wild card to combine with any two similar gems. Additionally, the game includes features players will recognize from Zynga’s previous With Friends titles like in-game chat and a Scrabble-like layout.

Zynga’s press release states that approximately 53 million With friends games are being played at any given time, with approximately six million chat messages sent per day.

Zynga’s latest With Friends title, Matching with Friends (our review) was released in June. According to AppData, the free iOS version of the game is currently the No. 59 top grossing app, the paid iOS version is the No. 31 top grossing app and the Facebook Matching With Friends app currently has 1.4 million monthly active users. For comparison, Words With Friends currently has 14.1 MAU on Facebook, and on iOS Scramble With Friends — released before Matching — is the No. 28 top grossing app.

Obviously the With Friends titles perform well for Zynga, but they are getting further away from the success of Words with each following release. It’ll be interesting to see if Gems With Friends will be able to buck the trend. Look for our review on Friday.(source:insidemobileapps

5)57 per cent of app users avoid some offerings due to privacy fears

by Zen Terrelonge

Some refuse to download the app at all, while other uninstall iffy designs.

New data from Pew Research says 88 per cent of US adults now own a mobile phone, with 43 per cent downloading apps to their devices.

Of course, apps are big draw for many, but users are reluctant to use some with rife reports of spam, malware, UDID, personal data tracking doing the rounds. The FBI was even forced to intervene in a pirate Android racket.

54 per cent of app users decide against downloading an app when they see the amount of personal data they need to share to gain access.

Meanwhile, 30 per cent of app users have uninstalled apps after noticing the data it had access to.

That’s equivalent to 57 per cent opting for both methods of app evasion.(source:mobile-ent

6)87 per cent of mobile users are HIDING SOMETHING on their device…

by Zen Terrelonge

Infographic shows content includes private contacts, flirty texts, and sexy photos – what’s lurking on yours?!

Security provider NQ Mobile found that more than half of consumers think celebrities lie about hacking scandals to generate publicity.

Given that, the firm asked the sceptics about their content stored on their own devices and found that just 53 per cent of smartphone owners use a passcode, despite the fact 87 per cent of them have content they want to hide.

Some things were perfectly innocent, 52 per cent cited family photos and 40 per cent claimed work documents.

However, 35 per cent want to keep flirty texts a secret, while 26 per cent have sexy photos and videos to hide – a mixture of themselves and of other people.

Conrad Edwards, CEO, NQ Mobile, said: “When only half of smartphone users actually lock their phones, it’s unclear whether these celebrities’ devices are being hacked or simply being left open for people to snoop.

“What is clear, is that you don’t need to be a celebrity to have things on your phone you’d rather others not see.”

The firm cautions people to protect their data by locking it, sharing personal info on social media wisely, research the intentions of apps, and use anti-virus software.(source:mobile-ent
