1)By 2013, it will be a smartphone-majority world

By Ryan Kim

Smartphone sales are expected to hit 54 percent of all cell phone sales by 2013, according to new projections from IHS. That is two years faster than previous projections and shows just how big the market is becoming thanks to low-cost handsets and more smartphone adoption.

Smartphones have officially crossed over the halfway point as they take over the mobile phone market in the U.S. But the world is not far behind and is expected to fly past the 50 percent mark by 2013, according to a new report by IHS iSuppli.

By the end of 2013, 54 percent of all phones globally will be smarpthones, IHS iSuppli predicted. That’s two years ahead of previous predictions by IHS iSuppli. Last year, smartphones comprised 35 percent of the global market.

The research firm said falling prices and the emergence of low-end smartphones in Asia-Pacific along with strong high-end sales in the U.S. and Europe have fueled the growth of smartphones around the world. And the momentum is not expected to slow down anytime soon.

By 2016, smartphones are expected to grab 67.4 percent of all cell phone sales. Regular feature phones will represent 28 percent of the market by 2016 while ultra-low-cost phones will hold down 4.2 percent of all sales.

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve known that smartphones are a force to be reckoned with and were expected to eventually dominate worldwide. But the fact that we’re now becoming a majority smartphone planet by next year is still striking. That has implications for manufacturers who can sell higher-end devices but also for operators, who will need to keep investing in their networks to stay ahead of data demand. And it also means mobile developers should be thinking about the bigger opportunities in going global.(source:gigaom

2)A quarter of UK firms expect tablet adoption to fizzle out

by Zen Terrelonge

And two-thirds reckon the telephone will become extinct within five years.

Tablet sales continue to spike, topping tens of millions each quarter, but 24 per cent of UK company CIOs reckon the tech will die out, according to Virgin Media Business.

Meanwhile, 65 per cent believe the telephone will become a thing of the past within the next five years, as most people today possess a mobile phone, and 62 per cent think PCs will be abandoned.

Smartphones look to stand the test of time though, as just 13 per cent believe they devices will be irrelevant.

70 per cent of Brits are set to own a connected mobile smart device by the end of 2012, demonstrating how ubiquitous the tech has become.

Tony Grace, chief operating officer, Virgin Media Business, said: “A decade ago it would have been unthinkable to suggest an office without telephones. Now it’s hard to imagine being separated from our smartphones.

“The sophistication of mobile technology is also having an impact on the PC. It’s never been easier to work on the move, making stationary PCs significantly less useful than laptop counterparts. However, tablet technology still has a long way to go to justify itself and sit alongside smartphones as essential business equipment.”(source:mobile-ent

3)Samsung market value plummets after $1bn loss to Apple

by Mike Shaw

South Korean company suffers $12bn loss in market value as court’s decision sends shockwaves across the tech community.

While there is talk that Samsung’s patent case loss to Apple could ultimately be beneficial to the company, what matters right now is the firm’s plummeting market value.

As shareholders reacted to the $1bn fine imposed by a US court, Samsung – which isn’t traded on the US stock market – dropped 7.5 per cent in Korean trading, a loss of more than $12bn in market value.

Alternately, shares of Apple have leapt by more than two per cent, adding nearly $15 billion to the market capitalisation of the world’s most valuable company.

Samsung hopes its efforts to innovate will retain the loyalty of consumers. An internal memo issued by Samsung management after the verdict, said: “History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation.

“We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritise innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt.”

In a similar trial that also ended last week, a South Korean court ruled that Apple and Samsung Electronics infringed each other’s patents with both companies were ordered to pay compensation.(source:mobile-ent

4)East Side Games launches Ruby Skies in Canada, Korea and Hong Kong

Mike Thompson

East Side Games’s newest social mobile title Ruby Skies launched today on Apple’s App Store, but only in Canada, Korea and Hong Kong.

Ruby Skies combines territory exploration and relationship development genres, with players controlling Cupid as he literally spreads love around the world and brings couples together. The game is initially launching in Canada, Korea and Hong Kong as testing areas for the game before it receives a wider release. Canada often sees releases in its version of the App Store before its United States counterpart does, but Korea and Hong Kong were chosen as proving grounds for Asia (which publisher 6waves has a great deal of experience in).

East Side Games isn’t sure about when the game will receive a wider release, as it’s still in the process of doing performance testing on the game. That said, it probably won’t be too long before players worldwide get to experience the game’s “waffles for the eyes” visual style.(source:insidesocialgames

5)Infographic: How to be a mobile app developer

by Mike Shaw

Website pulls together a list of musts for would-be devs.

The online education portal Schools.com studied the app landscape and came up with this infographic, with the aim of helping aspiring developers.

Reading through, it sounds like a lot of hard work, but with the average annual salary for employed app developers in 2011 at nearly $90,000, the juice is worth the squeeze.(source:mobile-ent
