Sony Mobile

1)46.8 per cent of Americans “don’t need 4G”

by Zen Terrelonge

Results found ahead of the rumoured 4G LTE-enabled iPhone 5.

Everything Everywhere has been Ofcom approved to bring 4G to the UK, and the news hasn’t sat well with rival networks.

Of course, the US has had access to the next-generation of mobile broadband for a couple of years, and investment bank Piper Jaffray told Apple Insider 46.8 per cent of Americans say they “don’t need 4G”.

The survey was conducted on the basis that the next iPhone 5 is likely to feature the supercharged mobile web tech.

Additional results show that 25.7 per cent reckon 4G and LTE are the same (they’re not exactly, as the speed can differ between the two), while 15.1 per cent said 4G LTE was the best, and 12.4 per cent favoured 4G.

51 per cent of the consumers said they have no idea who provides the best network, and it’s likely that opinion will be replicated over in the UK when the spectrum is offered to all operators.(source:mobile-ent

2)The iPhone 5 could reach 50M sales in U.S. (Also: Nobody wants a Facebook phone)

Devindra Hardawar

It’s not too shocking to think that Apple’s next iPhone will leapfrog last year’s iPhone 4S in sales — the real question is by how much.

Based on a recent survey of 2,000 consumers, Robert W. Baird analyst William Power predicts that Apple could sell more than 50 million iPhone 5 units in the U.S alone, Barrons reports. That’s a pretty big leap from the 37 million iPhone 4S units Apple sold worldwide during its launch quarter last year.

The Baird survey found that 39 percent of respondents were eligible for a phone upgrade (6 percent will be eligible in three months), and of that cross-section 45 percent planned to purchase an iPhone. Meanwhile, only 22 percent of potential phone buyers wanted an Android device (and 31 percent were still undecided).

The disparity isn’t surprising: An insurmountable amount of hype surrounds the iPhone 5 now, while I can’t think of any comparable Android device releases coming anytime soon (though maybe Motorola could change our minds when it unveils the Droid Razr HD). At this point, I can’t help but feel prematurely sorry for Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices, which will be announced in early September (likely a week before the iPhone 5).

Power’s survey also found that iPhone users were the most loyal to their platform, with 77 percent saying they’d buy another iPhone. Only 48 percent of Android users said they’d be sticking with Google’s platform. Notably, 17 percent of current Android owners were interested in jumping ship tot he iPhone.

Another interesting find: The survey noted that 51 percent of consumers were interested in an Amazon smartphone, while only 7 percent wanted a Facebook phone. Judging from reports, Facebook is indeed working toward building some sort of phone, though I really don’t think it needs one.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5 (or whatever it ends up being called) at a September 12 event, with a release to follow on September 21. That date seems particularly solid now that we’ve heard Verizon and AT&T are blocking out vacation times for employees around September 21.(source:venturebeat

3)Amazon announces September 6 press event: Is the 10-inch Kindle Fire incoming?

Ricardo Bilton

Is the 10-inch Kindle Fire finally on its way?

Amazon has sent an email to media outlets inviting them to an event on September 6 in Santa Monica, Calif. Details on the event are slim so far, but we have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

For one, it’s very likely that Amazon will finally announce its front-lit Kindle eReader, which will compete directly with Barnes & Noble’s Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight.

The main event for the day, however, will likely be a 10-inch Kindle Fire, a device that was rumored even before the original Kindle Fire was released. This larger tablet would be in direct competition with the iPad, which has stood relatively uncontested in the 10-inch tablet space so far.

Amazon is also likely to announce a revamped 7-inch Kindle Fire, which would iron out the hardware kinks found in the first version of the device.

September is shaping up to be a busy time for hardware announcements, with both Nokia and Motorola expected to announce new devices within the first week of the month.(source:venturebeat

4)Sony Mobile cuts 1,000 jobs, moves HQ from Sweden to Tokyo

by Mike Shaw

Tech firm announces that 15 per cent of its mobile handset division will be laid off.

In an effort to “increase operational efficiency, reduce costs and drive profitable growth”, Sony Mobile is axing around 1,000 jobs from its mobile division.

In a further cost-saving move, Sony Mobile will transport its headquarters from Lund, Sweden to Tokyo, Japan in October.

Sony Mobile has noted that its Lund operation will not close down altogether and will continue to be an important strategic site for the company. The main focus of the Lund site will turn to software and application development.

The job cuts are expected to take place at the end of March 2014 and will include 650 on-site staffers and up to 450 consultants.

Earlier this year, Sony Mobile announced a €1.15bn annual loss.(source:mobile-ent

5)Kabam launches Arcane Empires for iOS and Android

Emanuel Maiberg

Kabam today launched Arcane Empires for iOS and Android, bringing a brand new IP to mobile platforms.

The game is a city-building/strategy title set in a fantasy steampunk world run by a sinister prince who uses black magic to keep himself on his empire’s throne. Players control a fiefdom that rebels against the prince and his forces. As the game continues players are required to build up their armies and (hopefully) set the world free.

Like Kabam’s other mobile titles, Arcane Empires is a free-to-play game. While Kabam has had a presence on iOS devices for a while, the game marks the company’s first foray onto the Android platform. Although Kabam produces social games designed for mid-core audiences, president of Kabam Game Studios Andrew Sheppard tells us 70 percent of Kabam’s revenue comes from non-Facebook sources. As a result, the game isn’t available on social networks like Facebook or Google Play at this time.

This comes as no surprise, since Kabam announced in February that it was moving away from its origins on Facebook by expanding onto both mobile devices and other social networks like Kongregate. Sheppard tells us this is still the plan for Kabam, and the company is particularly focused on mobile devices and tablets right now.

Arcane Empires is available now in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.(source:insidemobileapps

6)INFOGRAPHIC: Do you know what your apps are REALLY doing?

by Zen Terrelonge

97 per cent of users don’t understand permission risks presented to their devices.

McAfee has explored just how knowledgeable app users are about the software they’re actually downloading to their phone, in a world where their devices store lots of personal content.

18.3m Americans have looked up health info, 32.5m access banking details, and 218m surf the web and read emails, but 97 per cent of app users still don’t understand the risks that apps can present.(source:mobile-ent
