日本大型社交游戏公司DeNA大举开拓美国市场

大家也许熟知社交游戏FarmVille及其开发公司Zynga,但日本的手机及社交游戏开发公司DeNA规模比Zynga更加庞大——目前该公司开始大举进军美国市场。今年,日本DeNA公司的运营收入将高达10亿美元,这是美国Facebook一直着力追求的年收入目标。

本周五,DeNA对外宣布最近向iPhone游戏Office Hero的开发公司Astro Ape进行投资,此外并没有提及该投资的具体条款。

仅在过去的12个月中,包括Astro Ape在内,DeNA总计对美国手机及社交游戏领域四家公司进行了收购或投资。继去年收购游戏工作室IceBreaker之后,上周该公司收购了iPhone社交游戏Tap Ranch和Tap Fish: Exotic的开发公司GameView Studios。此外在去年十月,DeNA还向手机游戏开发公司Aurora Feint投资上百万美元。

DeNA的首席执行官Tomoko Namba表示,DeNA致力于将自己打造成为世界最大的手机及社交游戏开发公司,并希望成为美国家喻户晓的游戏品牌。

“我们的各种收购和投资策略反映了我们一直致力于将自己打造成为美国游戏市场知名品牌的承若,我们希望继续投资发展美国市场。”Tomoko Namba说。

换句话说,这就意味着DeNA对美国手机及社交游戏公司的投资和收购行为还没有结束。

这次对Astro Ape的收购就是一次颇令人玩味的决定。Astro Ape公司在今年7月发售了一款备受欢迎的iPhone游戏Office Hero。然而,位于新泽西州的新兴公司Edison还只是社交游戏领域的一家小公司。DeNA却将也其纳入了DeNA的美国知名游戏开发公司的发展策略之中。

此外,DeNA在日本也展开了一些列投资活动。今年4月,DeNA与雅虎日本达成协议,发售了一款PC社交游戏平台Yahoo Mobage。之后今年6月,DeNA还在美国和日本社交游戏投资了2750万美元。

You’ve heard of Farmville-maker Zynga, but Japanese mobile and social game developer DeNA  is even bigger — and it’s on an aggressive buying spree in the United States. The company has a billion-dollar revenue run-rate for this year, around what Facebook is thought to be making. On Friday, the company announced its latest investment in a company called Astro Ape, maker of the popular iPhone game Office Hero. The company did not disclose terms of the deal.

In the past 12 months alone, DeNA has acquired or invested in four U.S. companies (including Astro Ape) in social and mobile gaming. Last week, it bought GameView Studios, developer of top-ranked iPhone social games like Tap Ranch and Tap Fish: Exotic. Another acquisition in the past year was of game studio IceBreaker. Last October, the company made a multimillion-dollar investment in mobile games developer Aurora Feint.

DeNA wants to become the largest mobile social games company in the world and a household name in the U.S., says its chief executive Tomoko Namba.

“Our acquisition and investment strategy reflects an overall commitment to becoming a household brand in the U.S. games market,” Namba says. “It is our expectation to continue to invest and grow aggressively in the U.S. market.”

In other words, DeNA is not done investing and purchasing U.S. mobile and social game companies.

The latest acquisition is an interesting choice. Astro Ape has one hit iPhone game to date, called Office Hero launched in July. But otherwise, the Edison, NJ-based startup is a fairly small player in the market. DeNA says the company is part of its strategy to become a well-known game developer in the U.S., so it must see something in the company beyond a one-hit wonder.

DeNA has also made some big moves in its home turf in Japan in the past year. In April, the company formed an alliance with Yahoo Japan to launch a PC-based social game platform called Yahoo Mobage. And in June, it launched a $27.5 million fund to make investments in social games in U.S and Japan.(Source:Forbes)
