1)Almost three-quarters of US Android users access Facebook via mobile

by Zen Terrelonge

Unsurprisingly, it’s the most used social network on the Google OS.

It’s Friday today, so get be sure to follow ME on Twitter –@MobileEntBiz – here, and Facebook here.

The NPD Group says the number of Android owners using Facebook has grown steadily over the past six months.

Meanwhile, Twitter mobile web and app use is at 23 per cent and 18 per cent respectively, while Google+ secured 16 per cent for the web, while app use fluctuated between ten and 15 per cent.

Facebook Android users spend almost 470 minutes a month – over 15 minutes per day – using the app, but despite the high usage period, it’s half the time users spend on mobile gaming.

Linda Barrabee, research director, NPD Connected Intelligence, said: “Ultimately, Facebook’s mobile success rests on delivering compelling mobile app and web experiences, and monetising on these experiences.

“In order to do this, Facebook needs to ensure that monetisation efforts via advertising enhance and do not disrupt the mobile social consumer experience; and with Facebook’s IPO looming and trading expected to begin on May 18th, all eyes are on the company.”(source:mobile-ent

2)Apple and Amazon look to supersize with rumours of a 4-inch iPhone and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire

by Keith Andrew

‘Bigger is better’ could be the theme that dominates in the latter half of 2012, with talk suggesting both Apple and Amazon are preparing to supersize their respective smartphone and tablet offerings.

Sources cited by Reuters have claimed Apple’s next iPhone – the likely iPhone 5 – could sport a bigger screen than its predecessor, coming in at 4-inches to the current model’s 3.5-inches.

Taking note

In regards to iPhone, it’s stated the larger device is a response by Apple to Samsung’s Galaxy Note, which has confounded early critics and won plaudits and sales thanks to its 4.8-inch screen.

Production on iPhone 5′s 4-inch display is reportedly already underway at three suppliers – LG Display in Korea, as well as at Sharp and Japan Display – with orders themselves set to be placed in June.

As a result, the next iPhone has been given a tentative launch date of August – that’s a month after Amazon’s revised Kindle Fire is expected to hit the shelves.

Reuters also reports Amazon is looking to go big, shifting up from the existing 7-inch Android-powered Kindle Fire – still not available outside of North America – to a new 8.9-inch device. (source:pocketgamer

3)This Finnish Formula One racer gets his own Angry Birds game

by Joe Osborne

Screw the cup–getting your very own Angry Birds game is a way cooler accomplishment. That’s what Finnish Formula One race car driver Heikki Kovalainen just scored, thanks to a collaboration with developer Rovio. Titled simply “Angry Birds Heikki,” the web-based game is set to launch on June 18 and Kovalainen will don that badass Angry Birds helmet to celebrate.

There isn’t much known about what the branded web game will entail, as all that Rovio has done to promote Angry Birds Heikki so far is create a teaser website with sharing links to build hype. However, Kovalainen has a sliver of a detail on his personal site. “The webgame, which will feature fun Angry Birds game levels with a racing theme in addition to other bespoke content, launching later in the summer,” the site reads.

Interested players can also pick up Heikki-themed Angry Birds gear on Rovio’s web store. This type of deal isn’t exactly new for Rovio. The Angry Birds have already invaded the worlds of feature film Rio and Wonderful Pistachios with branded games. But for the developer to latch onto Forumla One of all things is certainly interesting. Maybe it’s finally time for Angry Birds Racing?(source:games

4)Mobile traffic by 2016? Just the 39.75 trillion megabytes

by Tim Green

Ten times the current amount. Should put a strain on central London’s 2.5 networks.

New stats from Informa Telecoms & Media estimates the value of the whole mobile biz will go from from $325.8 billion to $627.5 billion between 2011 and 2016. There will be a rise of 23 per cent in phone ownership overall.

And its data that’s driving the rise, with traffic up from 3.89 trillion megabytes to 39.75 trillion megabytes.

The main uses of data will be web, P2P messaging and apps. Video streaming will consume one third of all bandwidth but only deliver one per cent of revs. Bit worrying.

Average users will consume 6.5 times as much video, over eight times as much music and social media, and nearly ten times as many games as in 2011.

Informa reckons the average number of text messages sent in a month will go from 118 now to 146 in four years.(source:mobile-ent

5)GameSalad branches out beyond Mac to add Windows support

by Keith Andrew

GameSalad has announced its no-code-needed development tool GameSalad Creator will now run on Windows, allowing a potential 500 million plus users to utilise the game creation tool.

More than 60,000 games across mobile and web have been made using GameSalad Creator to date, with those behind the tool hoping its new Windows version – which is currently in closed beta testing – will raise that total further.

Creating history

“Since we launched at SXSW in 2009, GameSalad has witnessed incredible growth,” said CEO Steve Felter.

“Initially, we introduced GameSalad Creator to Mac users, empowering them to easily create and publish iPhone and iPad games without the need to code.

“We’ve since added publishing to Android and HTML5 platforms, making cross-platform development as simple as clicking a button. Today, we answer the requests of thousands of game developers who’ve asked us to bring this remarkable platform to Windows users.”

The firm’s stats suggest around 15 percent of all new games to hit iOS in 2011 were created using GameSalad, with more than 60 titles having made the top 100 in the US App Store.

Those looking to take part in the closed beta for Windows 7 should sign up on the GameSalad website.(source:pocketgamer
