1)Rockstar’s Max Payne Mobile already reaching for top of the iOS charts

Kathleen De Vere

Rockstar Games’ latest classic game port, Max Payne Mobile, is once again proving paid apps can be very lucrative — if they have a strong IP.

A new version of the classic PC and console title, Max Payne Mobile is a $2.99 universal app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Since its release yesterday, the gritty action game has risen to the No. 11 spot on the paid iPhone app chart and the No. 3 spot on the paid iPad app chart. It’s also currently the No. 24 and No. 23 top grossing iPhone and iPad app, according to our AppData traffic tracking service.

In December, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 3 proved to be a breakout hit as a $4.99 paid app for iOS and Android. Despite a relatively high price tag, the game held the No. 1 spot on the top grossing iOS apps chart for two weeks after its release. Propped up with some periodic $0.99 discounts, GTA 3 has only dipped as low as No. 160 on the top grossing apps chart since its Dec. 15 release.

While Max Payne isn’t the same level of classic that Grand Theft Auto 3 is, its still posted a strong debut. Coupled with the recent success of both core and casual focused paid apps like Angry Birds Space, Where’s My Water, the Infinity Blade series, and the paid version of Draw Something, it means free-to-play isn’t yet the only option for successful monetization.

Originally developed by Remedy Entertainment and released as a PC game in 2001, Rockstar later published the game on the PS2 and Xbox. The game was both a commercial and critical success, and was hailed for its innovative, Matrix-inspired bullet time mechanic, which allowed players to stop the game’s action and move in slow motion. The release of Max Payne Mobile has been timed to help promote the upcoming Max Payne 3 on Xbox 360 and PS3.(source:insidemobileapps

2)Smartphone shipments predicted to hit 1bn in 2014

by Zen Terrelonge

Powered by demand in China and affordable devices.

Research from financial firm Credit Suisse claims smartphone shipments will cross the 1.05 billion milestone in just two years, according to Reuters.

The result will be up from 687.9 million shipments this year, which is a 46 per cent increase on 2011.

China is said to be the key driver behind the increase, while cheaper devices are introduced into emerging and developed markets.

Kulbinder Garcha, analyst, said: “We see robust growth for the smartphone market in China, which we think will account for 22 percent of global units by 2015.”

Apple is expected to dominate with a 23 per cent market share, while Nokia is expected to secure 11 per cent of the market by fighting back to recovery in 2013 due to pricing and distribution strategies.

Android leader Samsung and rising star Huawei are also set to gain market share – though it’s unclear how much – while RIM, HTC, Motorola and Sony are set to lose share.

It stands to reason that Apple and Samsung will survive in the market based on current sales of their respective devices. Meanwhile, Huawei is set to hit record sales of 60 million this year, though Nokia finding a stronghold in the market is something to take note of.

However, Sony will be hoping to dismiss the prediction and find success with its Xperia brand and ‘One Sony’ company restructure, while the news that RIM, HTC, and Motorola will struggle isn’t such a surprise, following continued falling sales.(source:mobile-ent

3)Apple expected to have sold 33 million iPhones, 12 million iPads in Q2 2012

by Keith Andrew

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has predicted Apple will reveal iPad sales have more than doubled year-on-year in its latest earnings report, set to be delivered by CEO Tim Cook on 24 April.

According to the latest predictions by Munster, Apple sold 33 million iPhones in Q2 2012.

Such a figure would represent a significant jump from the 18.65 million the company declared during the same quarter the previous year.

Up and down

Likewise, iPad sales will also have jumped to 12 million units, up from 4.69 million in Q2 2011.

Nevertheless, despite such a rise, Munster’s figures still come in below Wall Street’s general forecast of 13 million units sold.

That’s an apparent dip that doesn’t worry Munster at all, who notes investors will let Apple off the hook because of the device’s record start.

“We note that wait-times on Apple’s online store remain at 1-2 weeks for all versions of the iPad, suggesting that healthy demand remains,” he added.(source:pocketgamer

4)French designer Philippe Starck purportedly working with Apple on ‘revolutionary’ product

by Anthony Usher

According to acclaimed French designer Philippe Starck, he’s working with Apple to design a “revolutionary” new product that the Cupertino-based manufacturer will launch in the next eight months.

“Indeed, there is a big project together which will be out in eight months,” Starck said during a radio interview with France Info. This product, he said, will be “quite revolutionary”.

Apple is rumoured to be working on a next-generation iPhone that ditches its predecessor’s looks in favour of an all-new design, which is exactly what the French designer could be working on.

However, Tim Cook’s company is also purportedly prepping a voice-controlled television for release, as well as a controller peripheral designed especially for the iPhone and iPad.

Starck has worked on a range of different projects, including hotels and toothbrushes, so you can’t really rule out any of the above possibilities completely.(source:pocketgamer

Apple dismisses Philippe Starck’s involvement in any new products

by Jon Jordan

Outspoken French designer Philippe Starck is perhaps best known for his unusable lemon/orange squeezer and very expensive iPhone speakers.

It appears he’s not going to be known for the “quite revolutionary” product he told France Info Radio he’d been working on with Apple.

No form, no function

At least that’s according to an Apple spokeswoman who told AllThingsD that he was not working on new products with the company.

The press speculation is Starck was designing a yacht for Steve Jobs.

Seems a little fishy even for Starck to call a yacht “quite revolutionary”, but it appears that Apple TV, iPanel, or whatever it’s called is going to be the work of one Sir Jonathan Ive.(source:pocketgamer

5)Rovio warns gamers away from fake Angry Birds Space

by Zen Terrelonge

Hackers design Android malware version.

Angry Birds Space launched less than a month ago and the game has already been imitated by hackers that have created malware-riddled versions of the game, according to SophosLabs.

The virus-coated versions can be found within unofficial Android app stores, which led Rovio to say: “Don’t be fooled by fakes. As you get ready to pop pigs in zero gravity, watch out for fake versions of Angry Birds Space, and make sure to download safe by getting the official game from Rovio.”

The Trojan horse is the most common form of malware, which invades Android smartphones to install code and retrieve data.

The Angry Birds Space attack follows our report that Android malware rose by over 3300 per cent in 2011.(source:mobile-ent

6)Google: pin your hopes on cheap Android tablets

by Tim Green

Has Larry Page conceded the premium market to Apple?

Google announced its latest quarterly fiscals yesterday, reporting revenues of $10.65bn and net income of $2.89bn for Q1 this year.

There were no new stats on Android, which Google recently disclosed as powering 850,000 daily device activations.

However, CEO Larry Page did talk about tablets with analysts, emphasising the price advantage of the OS.

“There’s been a lot of success on some lower-priced tablets that run Android, maybe not the full Google version of Android.

“But we definitely believe that there’s going to be a lot of success at the lower end of the market as well with lower-priced products that will be very significant. And it’s definitely an area we think is important and we’re quite focused on.”(source:mobile-ent
