A few weeks ago we learned that Zynga has plans to release a Wild West themed game in the near future, but Meteor Games has beaten them to the punch with the release of Ranch Town today. We spoke with the co-founder and president of Meteor Games, Donna Powell, (who also was one of the original creators of NeoPets) to get the scoop on their newest offering.

What Is It?

Ranch Town is a western themed time management game that includes elements of farming, mining and other various activities. Powell said the inspiration came from her days at NeoPets, where a number of the staff there wanted to introduce a western themed land, but didn’t get the chance.
“It was always a bit of an inside joke,” she said. “Now we’re finally able to realize that concept.”

How to Play

Though the game is a bit light on the features right now, many more gameplay elements are slated to be added as early as next week. Currently, you start off with a plot of land, which can be farmed, an apple tree, and a cow. The first crop you’re allowed to plant is alfalfa, which is a good thing because that’s what your cow needs to eat in order to produce milk. A quick browse through the store reveals a number of machines that can be purchased to process milk and fruit into other products such as butter and juice.

This is a feature taken right from the Harvest Moon playbook, which isn’t surprising as Powell mentioned she’s a huge fan of that series, and other elements from Harvest Moon’s games can already be seen in Meteor’s most popular game, Island Paradise.

“Ranch Town is basically taking the concept of Island Paradise one step further,” said Powell. “We added in more features for players who wish to spend a longer period actively playing. You can still play for a very short period if you wish, but should you wish to play for 15-30 minutes, we provide a variety of activities to choose from.”

New features planned for release in the next week include panning for gold, mining for ores and fishing. And further down the road, a player avatar and decorative items will make appearances. If Island Paradise is any indication, we’ll be able to expect much more than just these features as the game matures.

“Meteor Games is a rather unique company, being from a gaming background rather than a marketing/metrics driven one,” said Powell. “The strengths that made Neopets so popular are core to our beliefs at Meteor. Our games will always look good, have a slightly odd ball sense of humor and constantly be evolving.”
