40.1 million people in the US are playing games on iPhones, iPod touches or iPads, claims games industry market research firm Newzoo.

That’s based on its International Gamers Survey 2010, which claims that iOS accounts for more than half the 77 million mobile gaming audience in the US.

Newzoo also claims that iOS is hot on the heels of Nintendo’s DS family, which has 41 million gamers aged 10+ in the US, and well ahead of PSP’s 18 million.

However, more DS and PSP players pay for their games – 67% and 66% respectively – compared to the 45% of iPhone and iPod touch players, and 32% of iPad players who do so.

One interesting finding is that there’s an overlap between DS and iPod touch – almost 14 million DS/DSi gamers also play iPod touch games, and vice versa.（source：mobile-ent）
