2)Robert Half Technology

1)ZeptoLab cuts deals with toymakers on Cut the Rope characters

Dean Takahashi

ZeptoLab is cashing in on its Cut the Rope smartphone game — which has been downloaded more than 100 million times — by announcing several licensing deals today. The company is announcing licensing deals with Hasbro, Mattel, JAKKS Pacific and apparel company LF USA.

The merchandising agreements are part of the company’s push to become a global gaming brand and expand into new markets. The deals are similar to those struck by Rovio for its Angry Birds mobile game and Outfit7 for its Talking Tom series of mobile apps. And it makes sense, considering Cut the Rope has a bigger audience than a lot of TV shows.

ZeptoLab is also showing off today a new version of its game, dubbed Cut the Rope Experiments: Bath Time. That game will soon debut on multiple platforms.

ZeptoLab is making the announcement at this year’s Toy Fair show in New York.

“We’re looking beyond where things are in the moment,” said Misha Lyalin, executive chairman at ZeptoLab, in a phone interview. “We have 100 million downloads now, but this is the beginning of where we are going to go.”

Under the deal with Mattel, ZeptoLab’s Om Nom character from Cut the Rope will become the basis of a variety of toys and games. One game will emulate the digital gameplay of Cut the Rope (pictured), where  the goal is to cut a rope in a way that solves various puzzles. The board game will use Mattel’s Active Touch technology, dubbed Apptivity, which allows kids to play with a physical toy on the surface of an iPad.

With Hasbro, ZeptoLab has a deal to bring co-branded board games to the market featuring Cut the Rope and Om Nom. Toymaker JAKKS Pacific will market stand-alone Cut the Rope branded game controllers for kids. And Li & Fung (LF USA) will create sleepwear and loungewear featuring Om Nom starting in the fall of 2012.

Cut the Rope was published by Chillingo in October 2010 and it has more than 30 million monthly active users and is played in 125 countries. It is the brainchild of two twin brothers, Semyon and Efim Voinov, in Moscow who struck it rich with a clever game. Now in their 20s, they have been making games since they were 10.(source:venturebeat

2)Biggest barrier to the app economy? Finding a developer

by Tim Green

Study highlights shortage of talent.

A survey by Robert Half Technology of more than 1,400 US CIOs revealed a rising demand for consumer and enterprise apps .

27 per cent said their companies already offer a mobile app, while another 22 per cent plan to offer one in 2012.

But what’s holding them back is finding developers to make them.

28 per cent said a major problem was “finding and hiring IT professionals with the necessary expertise”, while 29 per cent said “collaborating across departments”.

This rising demand is inflating salaries too. The Robert Half Technology 2012 Salary Guide projects rates will increase by 9.1 perc ent next year — one of the largest increases of any IT position researched.

Other issues were “keeping the application up to date” (19 per cent) and “gaining approvals from the application store or market” (16 per cent).

“Building mobile applications requires intense collaboration between numerous groups within the organisation, including marketing, IT, operations and sales,” said John Reed, executive director of Robert Half Technology.

“It’s important for mobile application developers to have strong soft skills in addition to the ability to write code and test and debug software application.

“Because the demand for professionals with a track record of building successful mobile apps currently outpaces the supply, companies are willing to pay a premium for professionals with these skills.”(source:mobile-ent

3)iPad 2 price cuts ahead of iPad 3 debut?

by Zen Terrelonge

US chain Meijer strips $70 from the 16GB wi-fi version.

In December, we reported that the iPad 3 was expected to launch in the first quarter of this year.

Now, rumours are building as Apple Insider says Meijer has cut $70 from the price of the 16GB wi-fi iPad 2, now falling to $429.

A significant move, given that Apple products are famously never reduced without notable events such as Black Friday or Christmas coming up, or alternatively the release of a new device.

Presumably, Meijer’s sale is in an attempt to clear stock ahead of the iPad 3′s speculated March unveiling.

The tablet is predicted to run LTE and an A6 processor. Additionally, Apple is reportedly auditioning apps to demonstrate at the iPad 3 launch, just as it did last year with the iPad 2 and iMovie.(source:mobile-ent

4)Rumour: Amazon to launch updated 7-inch Kindle Fire and new 9-inch edition ‘this summer’

by Anthony Usher

According to a note from Pacific Crest analyst Chad Bartley, Amazon is preparing to launch an updated version of its 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet alongside an all-new 9-inch edition.

“We believe there is an upward bias, particularly from the new 7- and 9-inch models, which we expect to launch in mid-2012,” Bartley wrote in a note to clients.

Last May, website Boy Genius Report reported that Amazon was working on two tablet models: the 7-inch “Coyote”, which was eventually released as the Kindle Fire; and a 10-inch quad-core tablet codenamed “Hollywood”.

A subsequent report by DigiTimes, however, suggested that Amazon had tweaked its tablet roadmap by adding an 8.9-inch slate to the mix, which was scheduled to hit store shelves before the aforementioned 10-inch tablet.

Amazon’s updated 7-inch Kindle Fire and its larger 9-inch brother are rumoured to arrive this summer. Excited?(source:pocketgamer

5)More than half mobile users make purchases on their devices, claims InMobi

by Keith Andrew

As a taster of things to come, ad network InMobi has lifted the lid on a number of stats CEO Naveen Tewari will divulge at Mobile World Congress later in February.

Tewari will use the stage in Barcelona to detail the results of the firm’s global media consumption survey conducted during the fourth quarter of 2011, with a rise in consumer purchases via mobile leading the line.

InMobi insight

The firm claims 53 percent of all mobile users have used their handset to make a purchase, with phones now using up more free time than the once dominant television – 27 percent of what InMobi dubs ‘media time’ to TV’s 22 percent.

“The results of our survey showcase the ways in which mobile devices are revolutionising the media landscape in every corner of the world,” said Tewari.

The firm claims 76 percent of those questioned said they plan to use their mobile to make purchases during 2012, with mobile advertising even finding a stable audience – 66 percent stating that they are “just as comfortable” with mobile advertising as they are with TV ads.

6)Management title Football Director transferring to iOS, Android, and Windows Phone ‘later this month’

by Anthony Usher

Later this month, Sport Director’s classic management title Football Director will dribble its way past two defenders and onto iPhone, iPad, Android, and Windows Phone.

Football Director, which debuted on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum back in 1986, will arrive boasting four English leagues, an additional 11 international leagues, and an abundance of “realistic” teams and players.

Naturally, if you aren’t entirely happy with how some of your footy players are performing, you can tell them to pack their boot bag and trade them on the game’s “balanced” player transfer market.

As you’d expect from a football-management title, each match you compete in can be played at five different speeds. There’s also a “auto-resolve” function should you need to cram 90 minutes of action into a few seconds.

Yellow card

If you decide to splash the cash on Football Director, which includes information from the 2011/2012 season, you’ll automatically become eligible to download a free 2012/2013 season update this summer.

Further versions of Football Director for other major mobile and tablet platforms will be released sometime in 2012, alongside a special US-only version of the game entitled Soccer Director.(source:pocketgamer

7)Dream Heights takes on Tiny Tower on iPhone in the U.S. App Store

by Joe Osborne

Not deliberately, of course. We sure know of at least two folks that aren’t terribly thrilled about this news. Amidst claims of copycatting, cloning, what have you, Dream Heights has made it to the U.S. iOS App Store. And according Zynga, it’s certainly not the first game in its category, but it’s most definitely the most social.

Whether that makes it cool or not depends on who you ask. While East Side Games’ Jason Bailey thinks “cloning” is a natural thing to entertainment, Double Fine’s Tim Schafer thinks people who say that are liars. (So, take your side already, eh?) At any rate, the game allows players to socialize via a Sky Bridge to visit friends and shop in their towers.

Players can out-build real-life monuments while mixing and matching up to 50 different stores. We had a look at Dream Heights when it landed on the Canadian App Store a few weeks back, and this release looks largely the same. To check out our full impressions of Dream Heights, click here.
