1)The iPhone 4S Bumped Downloads For Top Apps by 15% in November, Fiksu Says

Kim-Mai Cutler

The cost for mobile developers to acquire a loyal user held steady last month as the new iPhone 4S bumped downloads for top apps to a record, said Fiksu, a Boston-based company that mediates between many different ad networks and ways of getting new customers for apps.

The company said that the new iPhone plus latest version of iOS bumped downloads for the top 200 free apps in the U.S. to 5.65 million per day, up from 4.91 million a day in October. A year earlier, the top 200 apps saw about half as many downloads.

As downloads rose overall, the cost to acquire a loyal user (or one that opens an app at least three times) held steady at around $1.43, down four cents from $1.47 the previous month.

Fiksu’s chief executive Micah Adler takes this as a sign that app developers are becoming savvier about which channels they use to get users. Fiksu is a Boston-based company backed by Charles River Ventures that helps app makers find the cheapest way to get new customers.

User acquisition costs are key to app makers, especially companies that have already established revenue models, because these companies arbitrage the difference between bringing new users in the door and monetizing them later through virtual currency purchases or advertising.

Overall, it looks like user acquisition costs are settling in at a new level after being bumped over the summer. Developers have told us that the cost of getting a new user on iOS was half or a third as much at the beginning of the year before Apple cracked down on offer walls.(source:insidemobileapps

2)Infinity Blade 2 takes notes from Mafia Wars’s playbook next year

by Joe Osborne

Let’s just hope that seven bucks it’s asking for comes down by that time. Chair Entertainment, the creator of Infinity Blade and its critically-acclaimed sequel, has announced that an ambitious social update is coming to the game in 2012. The new social feature is known as Clash Mobs, and it call thousands of players together both in real-time and asynchronously to take down massive enemies. Sound familiar?

“Clash Mobs will appear in an update of the game and incorporate players from all over the world,” Infinity Blade 2 lead designer Donald Mustard told Mashable. “Right now, you play the game by yourself, but Clash Mobs will let you partner with thousands of other players in real-time to help you reach a goal in the game.”

The update, which is expected to land within the next six months, will reward all players that contribute to each massive battle with new weapons and experience points. “We want gaming apps to be a massive social event, and this will be a step in the right direction,” Mustard said to Mashable. “The concept is already available on certain games such as Words With Friends, so we wanted to incorporate a social component to this role-play games, as well.”

According to Mashable, Mustard said that these collaborative efforts could take upwards of 24 hours with thousands of friends and strangers alike lending their blades to the fight. Again, sound familiar? This all sounds like the boss battles common to Facebook role-playing games like Mafia Wars and its new mobile counterpart, though in real time rather than asynchronous play. Now, the biggest differential between the two is that hefty $6.99 price tag.(source:blog.games

3)Andy Rubin: Android Had A Jolly Good Christmas With 3.7M Activations

Robin Wauters

Google SVP Andy Rubin took to Twitter again today, not to delete one of his tweets but to publish a brand new one, saying Android saw 3.7 million activations in two days (Christmas day and the day before).

He also posted it on his Google+ account, just in case you were wondering.

Probably, Rubin was trying to add some context to a report published earlier today by Flurry, which said 6.8 million Android and iOS devices were activated on Christmas day alone, combined, and 242 million apps were downloaded the same day.

Just last week, Rubin revealed that Android passed 700,000 device activations per day, which means the 3.7 million Christmas period activations translate to roughly a 2.7 times-spike.

Not exactly a bad report card for a two-day period, but not mind-bogglingly impressive either.

The question everyone will be asking is how many iOS devices were activated during the same period, but don’t expect any Apple executives to jump on Twitter to tell you. If I were a betting man, I’d wager that slightly less iPhones were activated on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but more iOS devices in total when you account for iPods and iPads.(source:techcrunch

4)Leaked Windows Phone roadmap hints at Tango launch in Q2 2012, Apollo in Q4

by Keith Andrew

It’s already been described as dated by some commentators, but a leaked roadmap for the Windows Phone platform suggests Microsoft plans to deliver two major updates before the end of the year.

The roadmap, which was obtained by WMPoweruser, suggests the next major update – dubbed Tango – is due to roll out in Q2 2012, largely as expected.

More interesting, however, is the suggestion its successor will follow two quarters later.

Blast off

Apollo – as it’s been billed – is pencilled in for a Q4 2012 debut, with the document pointing to the launch of what is described as “competitive superphones” at the same time.

It’s expected Apollo will be built to run on dual-core devices equipped with HD screens, with the business sector also cited as a focus.

Though the date of the document itself is not known, it suggests Microsoft expects to have amassed a respectable consumer base by that time, with the launch of the first Nokia devices in November 2011 the means to that end.(source:pocketgamer

5)Mobile data use to grow 21-fold by 2015

by Zen Terrelonge

Britons set to reach more than 4GB per month.

Cisco Systems says that mobile data consumption is to see its biggest ever uptake within the next four years.

The UK used an average of 129MB per month in 2009, which than reached 268MB in 2010, according to the report.

However, the monthly 4,023MB expected from Britain in 2015 will almost double the 2,293MB expected from the US, demonstrating the popularity of browsing on-the-go.

That said, the mobile data use will mostly be fuelled by dongles that are connected to laptops.

Other countries with a penchant for mobile data includes France, Italy and Australia, which are all predicted to pass the 4GB use mark, while China and India’s usage is set to remain under 500MB.(source:mobile-ent
