1)Android is Now Activating 700,000 Devices Per Day

Kim-Mai Cutler

Just an update on Android’s ever accelerating momentum: the platform is now seeing 700,000 devices activated each day up from a pace of 550,000 per day in July, according to Andy Rubin, who oversees the mobile operating system and platform for Google.

Android has seen at least 200 million total device activations through mid-November. That’s just behind the 250 million figure that Apple shared about cumulative device sales for iOS. At this pace, Google probably added another 18 to 20 million or so device activations in the last month.

The platform has grown fast enough that Facebook now sees more daily active use on its Android app than its iPhone one — a signal that all first-tier developers should be seeing the same trend now if not very soon.(source:insidemobileapps

2)6waves Lolapps Launches First Mobile Games

AJ Glasser

Facebook publisher-developer 6waves Lolapps has finally made its move into mobile publishing with Yeti Town and Splode Free now live in the App Store.

Both games are puzzle titles apparently developed by smaller games studios and published by 6waves Lolapps. Yeti Town is a matching game nearly identical to Spry Fox’s Triple Town; Splode Free is a music-and-color puzzle that challenges players’ sense of timing. Both games are available for free, with Splode Free’s title implying that a paid version is on its way. Splode developer Escalation Studios previously published its mobile game, Dr. Awesome, through ngmoco. It’s not immediately clear who developed Yeti Town.

As more mature companies on Facebook expand their operations into both publishing and mobile game development, we’ve been curious to see whether those same companies would attempt to become mobile publishers. So far as we know, 6waves Lolapps is the only company that’s combined both branches of business, while developers like Zynga and Crowdstar have stuck to developing and self-publishing their own titles for mobile even as they consider expanding into Facebook game publishing. Traditional video game developer EA — through its mobile division — has also mostly stuck to producing its own games for mobile rather than publishing third party games on mobile platforms.

6waves Lolapps was born of a merger between Facebook publisher 6waves and Ravenwood Fair developer Lolapps. The company closed a $35 million round of funding led by Nexon shortly after the merge, and has since launched a developer fund aimed at publishing games for both social and mobile platforms, and acquired Chinese developer Smartron5, which is currently working on both mobile and social titles.(source:insidemobileapps

3)The Kindle Fire is Growing Fast, But The iPhone Still Leads Mobile Ad Impressions

Kathleen De Vere

If advertising is any indication, consumers are snapping up the Kindle fire.

Advertising impressions on the Amazon tablet are growing by an incredible 19 percent a day — beating the pace set by the iPad after it launched in 2010.  According to Millennial Media’s Mobile Mix Report for November, the Android device is already seeing hundreds of millions of mobile ad impressions a month.

What this may mean for developers is that Android is quickly becoming a bifurcated market, with Google’s official Android Market remaining the pathway to phone owners and Amazon’s appstore becoming the gateway to tablet owners.

Overall, impressions on connected devices (tablets, iPod Touches, eReaders, etc) grew 14 percent month-over-month, and now account for 16 percent of Millennial Media’s advertising, an uptick the company is crediting partially to the popularity of the Kindle Fire.

While the Kindle Fire is performing strongly, the iPhone and its iOS operating system showed the biggest gains month-over-month. The iPhone still leads Millennial’s device charts, accounting for 14 percent of impressions with an eight percent increase month-over-month. Overall iOS increased its advertising share by seven percent in November. Aside from gains posted by the Kindle Fire and iOS devices, the status quo was largely intact. Apple was still the leading device manufacturer, accounting for 26 percent of all devices Millennial measured. Samsung remained the second most popular manufacturer, with17 percent of all devices.

Android also kept its hold as the most popular operating system overall — 14 out of the 20 most popular mobile phones are Android devices, and the OS accounts for 50 percent of ad impressions Millennial serves. iOS held steady in second place with 30 percent of impressions and RIM trailed in third place with 17 percent. Symbian and Windows both saw their share of impressions fall to one percent apiece.

Millennial also reported that advertising served over Wi-Fi connections is still growing quickly, increasing by 11 percent month over month. Wi-Fi connections now account for 39 percent of mobile advertising, up from the 33 percent the company reported in July. While connected devices are growing overall, their share of Wi-Fi impressions actually shrunk between July and November, down from 42 to 38 percent.(source:insidemobileapps

4)Unity Technologies developers will be able to publish 3D games via Adobe Flash

Dean Takahashi

Unity Technologies announced today that its developers will be able to take the games they’ve created and publish them in the Flash 3D format, allowing them to reach much bigger audiences on the web than before.

Unity is beginning the open beta test for its Unity 3.5 game development engine. Since Adobe published its Flash Player 11 in October, Flash games are able to run 3D graphics and take advantage of 3D hardware in a user’s computer. That, in turn, makes it possible to run 3D games created with Unity’s 3D game engine tools and distribute them to the wider web via a Flash add-on.

For developers, this means that they will be able to get high-quality Unity-based 3D games out to a larger mass market, since Flash is present in more than 90 percent of user computers. For consumers, it could mean much better experience when it comes to playing 3D games on the web.

“We are finally delivering on 3D for everyone,” said David Helgason, chief executive of San Francisco-based Unity, in an interview. “Flash is the last major platform for us, and the biggest one of all. It’s amazing. We think 3D content will burst out on the internet.”

To encourage developers to port their Unity games to Flash, Unity Technologies is holding a contest with a $20,000 prize. Helgason said that it took months of engineering work to make Unity compatible with Adobe’s Stage3D web technology, which enables Flash to make use of 3D hardware in a user’s computer. In the past, Flash was based on exploiting only the central processing unit (CPU).

Helgason said that Unity games will now be almost universally available on the web via Flash, on the consoles, on iOS and Android, and a variety of other smaller platforms. The open beta is available for download at 8 am Pacific time on Thursday, Dec. 22. The new version of Flash is also supporting Google’s native client technology for the Chrome browser.

“We believe this will make Adobe flash into a AAA games platform,” Helgason said.(source:venturebeat

5)Kindle Fire no longer blocks Android Market website

By Kevin C. Tofel

Earlier this week, I grilled Amazon for attempting to control web browsing activities on its Kindle Fire. Any attempts to browse Google’s Android Market website were redirected to Amazon’s own AppStore on the tablet. I understand why Amazon did so: It wants to have Android apps installed on the Fire directly from its own curated application store, and it doesn’t want to field support calls when users have issues with Android Market apps on the Kindle Fire. Still, I feel the browser is sacred, and no browsing activities should be hijacked like this.

The good news is that Amazon has rethought its approach. With the new Kindle Fire software update, made available on Wednesday, you can now browse to the Google Android Market website. After I installed the software update to the Fire – we have complete instructions on the five-minute process here — I verified the browsing block was gone. I did get a security certificate warning, but was able to continue in the Fire’s browser with no other issues.

Does this mean you can now install Android Market apps to the Kindle Fire over the web? Not exactly, because there’s no simple way to associate the Kindle Fire with a Google account, which is how Google’s web-based Android Market links to devices. Regardless, this step was the right one for Amazon to take because it allows people to see which Android apps Google does offer, and it no longer hijacks the web page a user wants to view.(source:gigaom

6)One Out Of Almost Every 7 Ads To be Mobile by 2016

By Dan Rowinski

In 2016, one out of almost every seven digital ads will be served to a mobile device. Mobile advertising will account for 3.8% of all global ad spending on all media. According to Berg Insight, that will account for as much as $22.45 billion (€17.2 billion) of the global industry in 2016.

To those closed off in tech bubbles, these numbers may actually seem a little small. “But, mobile is everywhere,” they will say, “doesn’t 15.2% seem a bit low?” Look at it this way: mobile is a content delivery platform that is many ways is still immature. What will the ad spend be in 2012? 2025? Probably a lot higher than 15.2%.

It is easy to forget that advertisers still like to throw their money at old media properties. Television is king. Followed by print magazines and newspapers, Internet/digital, Radio and location/sponsorships. If everyone has a smartphone, why do advertisers not spend as much on mobile? Advertisers are often slow to jump on a moving wagon. They like to go with what has worked in the past because it is tried and true. At the same time, they like eyeballs. As many as possible engaging in a variety of ways.(source:readwriteweb
