Social Game Theory

By Mechael

All living entities must consume (destroy) resources to stay alive. Whenever there is more than one entity in a world of finite resources (natural or man-made), Games spontaneously form because of the activities arising from the instinctive quest for survival and self-gain. In a world of infinite resources, Games might never even exist. In reality, we live in a world of finite resources so Games are an unavoidable part of life.

There are two fundamentally different types of games, a fair (just, legitimate) game and an unfair (illegitimate) game. Any game that doesn’t comply with the principles of fair play is an illegitimate game. Spontaneously formed Games are rarely fair due to the nature of autonomy. Intentionally formed Games can also be unfair, but could be converted into legitimate Games by making the changes needed to comply with the five principles of fair Game play.

The five principles of fair (just, legitimate) Game play are:

A set of Rules clearly defines the terms and conditions of play.

Game activities take place within a designated Arena.

All Players know, consent to, and comply with the Rules.

Players Enter by mutual consent only, and Exit is unlimited.

An independent Referee moderates and applies Rules.

Any game that doesn’t comply with all of these principles is an unfair and illegitimate social game. Each of these principles has significant implications, so its important to explore each of them in depth to ensure the meanings are clear. The following chapters provide common examples showing how these fair Game principles apply to everyday life and the simple solutions for correcting illegitimate Games. We could all benefit both individually and collectively as a society if mankind were to adopt these universal principles of fair Game play in all areas of social interaction (politics, religion, corporations, economics, jobs, etc.).

Everyone loves a fair game. Recreational Games such as sports and casino games comply with all of these rules for fair play. It’s a puzzle to me why so many of our social Games are illegitimate. From government, to corporations, to revolutions, and a wide range of social activities. If we expect absolute fairness in casual games, then why do we expect less from the social Games that impact our very survival?

These 5 simple principles could easily be applied to any social Game, to ensure its legitimacy. In some of the other topics on this site I’ll will be posting some specific examples of the ways in which this can be done.

It’s important to keep in mind that the 5 principles of fair play apply to all cultures, organizations, people, and circumstances. There are no exceptions. Any social Game that violates these principles is illegitimate. The good news is that these principles provide simple guidelines to correct any Game created by people.

What do you think?

The title of Social Game Theory has caused some misunderstandings. It seems that the name can easily be misinterpreted to give the impression that it’s related to the “game-theoretic” discipline of Game Theory. While SGT is related to General Systems Theory, it is distinct from current Game Theory in several ways. To make this distinction clear I’ve changed the title to “Social Dynamics Theory” (SDT). This new name more accurately reflects the fact that SDT is primarily focused on dynamic, complex games of social interactions, rather than isolated, linear game models.(source:michaelurban3
