1)Android’s US ad impressions double that of iOS in Q3 2011, reports Millennial

by Keith Andrew

Shifting from a monthly analysis to a quarterly report for the first time, there was little change in Millennial Media’s look at the US smartphone market during the third calendar quarter of 2011.

As has been the case since the end of 2010, Android remains the dominant smartphone platform according to Millennial’s figures, with a 56 percent share of the firm’s smartphone mix.

However, while that represented the same 2 percent rise for Google’s platform as iOS enjoyed from the figures posted at the end of Q2, Android’s share is now exactly double that of Apple’s.

The top two

The rest of the market almost seems insignificant in comparison.

Both BlackBerry and Windows Phone managed to lose share in Q3 – the latter dropping to 1 percent, while RIM’s platform shed 2 percentage points.(source:pocketgamer

1)Pew: Tablet owners consume a crazy amount of news but they won’t pay for it

Sean Ludwig

A new Pew Research Center study shows that the behavior of tablet owners is changing significantly when it comes to consuming news, for good and bad.

Several studies have already shown that tablets create a higher level of engagement than a desktop or laptop, most likely because of the physical interaction with content and media. A popular video floating around the web even highlights tablet interactivity versus traditional print media using a baby as a barometer for engagement. But in this Pew study, we see how this tablet engagement translates specifically to news consumption.

The Pew study shows that 11 percent of U.S. adults now own tablets like the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab or Nook Color. Seventy seven percent of these tablet owners use their devices daily, and the average tablet user spends 1 hour and 35 minutes on their device every day. The most popular activity for these users is reading email, with 54 percent checking daily. Surprisingly, reading news comes in a very close second place with 53 percent of users reading headlines and in-depth features daily. The third place activity is checking social networks like Facebook and Twitter at 39 percent.

The majority of tablet users, according to the survey, are employed full-time, affluent with family income totaling more than $75,000 per year and educated, with most users have college degrees. The Pew Research Survey collected the data in the summer and early fall of this year, questioning 1,159 tablet users over the telephone.

When it comes specifically to news consumption, the results are a mixed bag for media outlets. Yes, tablet owners love consuming news and they gobble it up on the browser and news applications. But, much like the hordes of regular Internet users, tablet owners don’t want to pay for the news they consume on their iPads and Android tablets. A disappointing 14 percent of tablet owners surveyed have paid for news specifically for the tablet. Among those who haven’t already put money down, 21 percent said they would consider paying $5 a month for news while 10% said they would pay $10 a month for news on the tablet.(source:venturebeat

3)Former MoMac man Chris Hanage joins Papaya Mobile as Europe GM

by Matt Sakuraoka-Gilman

China-based social mobile gaming platform Papaya Mobile has hired Chris Hanage, formerly of MoMac, as its new general manager for Europe.

Joining Oscar Clark, the company’s developer evangelist, Hanage will be in charge of expanding the platform’s operations in Europe, attracting developers and strategic partners to build on its 30 million strong userbase.

European hotbed

“It’s a dream opportunity to join such a fun, fast growing and dynamic company at the forefront of one of the most exciting spaces in the mobile world,” said Hanage.

“Europe has always been a hotbed of mobile and games talent, and I’m looking forward to building Papaya’s ecosystem with developers big and small.”

Papaya had grown by a substantial amount in August 2011, with total growth after a 20 month period of over 900 percent.(source:pocketgamer

4)Nexon signs up for Unreal Engine 3 in iOS shooter Combat Arms: Zombies

by Matt Sakuraoka-Gilman

It’s easy to see the lure of Unreal Engine 3 for mobile developers in terms of the detailed environments they can create.

Chair’s UE3 pinup Infinity Blade is one such example, whilst recent App Store entries such as Warm Gun and The Dark Meadow were also crafted using the powerful graphics engine.

Korean publisher Nexon is looking to utilise Unreal Engine 3 in its upcoming mobile-based FPS Combat Arms: Zombies.

The lesser known son of Nexon

Nexon is better known for its huge online gaming community, built around its MapleStory MMO franchise, which currently boasts a userbase of over 100 million users in over 60 countries.

Indeed, Zombies is based on of the company’s successful online PC shooter Combat Arms; with Nexon hoping its portability will attract hardcore players to also experience the game while on-the-go.

It’ll be arriving on iPad and iPhone sometime in November.(source:pocketgamer

5)Belatedly Chillingo begins Android push with Spider Jack, Contre Jour, and Roll in the Hole

by Keith Andrew

Macclesfield-based publisher Chillingo has traditionally made its name on iOS – the likes of Angry Birds and Cut the Rope cementing its position as a major force on the platform, even before its multi-million buyout by EA.

It’s not really got to grips with other mobile platforms, however, at least until now; announcing seven games are coming to Android Market in paid and ad-supported free versions.

Alive with Five

Adding to The Wars, which launched at the start of 2011, Chillingo has unleashed Spider Jack by MaxNick and Mobirate’s Office Gamebox in paid and lite version on the marketplace.

It’s a move co-GM Chris Byatte believes is a reflection of the growing important Google’s platform is gaining in the gaming sector.

“Android’s install base is steadily rising and we are working with our talented indie developers to bring fun, entertaining titles to this expanding platform,” said Byatte.

Following on will be Contre Jour from Mokus, Roll in the Hole by Eccentricity Games, Kylinworks Interactive’s Little Lost Chick, My Vampire Boyfriend from Oscar Mike Games and Parking Mania, also by Mobirate.

No specific launch date has been given, with the five games simply labelled ‘coming soon’.(source:pocketgamer

6)Velti’s Mobclix Starts Supporting Cash Advances For Mobile Developers

Kim-Mai Cutler

For developers who are looking to get paid more frequently from mobile advertising networks, Velti’s Mobclix is providing cash advances on a two- and four-week basis for a fee.

The company is launching an advanced ad payment program, which lets developers get paid every 15 or 30 days instead of waiting for as long as three months.

The advances come at a cost, naturally. If a developer chooses the 15-day version of the program, they must pay a fee of 10 percent of all monthly revenues earned. If they pick the 30-day version, the fee drops to about 8 percent. This is not a one-time fee. It’s a recurring percentage of monthly earnings. Consider it like a traditional cash advance program on pay checks, which come with steep interest rates.

“The reason there are fees is two-fold: developers get money faster, but, in addition to the cost of borrowing money, it requires engineering and finance effort for the company to maintain, so there is a fee for this service,” a Mobclix spokesperson tells us.

Mobclix is a mediation network that swaps in the highest-paying ads into an app from multiple mobile ad networks. That lets developers have higher eCPMS (or higher revenues for every time they deliver a thousand impressions of an ad to consumers). The company was bought by Velti in 2010 for $1.1 million in cash and $1.4 million in stock. But the company’s founders and employees could get up to $43 million in earnouts this year if they meet certain revenue targets. A cash advance program, provided there are enough mobile developers who need liquidity now, could be a smart way to get there.(source:insidemobileapps

7)How Much Faster is iOS 5 For Mobile Browsing? (Infographic)

By John Paul Titlow

Apple released the latest version of its mobile operating system two weeks ago, boasting 25 million installs within the first week.

In addition to over 200 new features, iOS 5 came with the promise of enhanced speed. Just how much faster is it? When it comes to mobile Web browsing, iOS 5 loads pages slightly more than twice as fast as its predecessor, iOS 4.

This is according to a side-by-side test of 3,000 Web apps performed by New Relic, who provided us with the infographic below. They loaded those sites using Safari 5.1 on iOS 5 and compared the results to what they saw when using Safari 5.0 on iOS 4.

According to these tests, it would appear that iOS 5 is substantially faster than the previous version, and is most likely worth the upgrade for most users. The new OS upgrade is available for either version of the iPad, the iPhone 4 and 3GS (it comes installed on the new 4S) and new iPod Touch devices. (source:readwriteweb

8)Diner Dash infographic proves the App Store is the place to be

By Jim Squires

Over the last year or so, we’ve done a fair bit of reporting on the importance of diversification in the casual games market. The days when a developer can rely solely on the profits of PC games, it would seem, have more or less come to an end. PlayFirst seemed to recognize this earlier than anyone else, and quickly jumped into the emerging mobile games market three years ago, putting Diner Dash on the App Store shortly after it first launched.

To celebrate Flo’s third birthday on iOS devices, they’ve released an infographic that details some pretty impressive numbers. Diner Dash has seen 10 million downloads, maintains 1.3 million monthly active users, and has seen players rack up more than a billion minutes of play.(source:gamezebo
