1)More details on Unity-powered iOS shooter M.U.S.E., Chillingo no longer publishing

by Rob Hearn

You win some, you lose some. Earlier today we reported that Chillingo would be publishing Radiangames’s much-anticipated shooter Super Crossfire. Now we’re reporting that it won’t, for some reason, be publishing Lab Rats Studio’s equally anticipated shooter M.U.S.E.

The news follows the release earlier this week of the first gameplay trailer for the delayed over-the-shoulder shooter, which was developed in the Unity engine, much like Madfinger’s Shadowgun.

Lab Rats Studio has revealed that the episodic game will feature destructible environmental objects, comic book-style cut-scenes, an arcade-style scoring system with Game Center integration, and an ‘adrenaline’ mode that heightens your senses and adds score multipliers (see screenshot). It sounds a bit like Sega’s console shooter Vanquish.

The story? You play as government agent Sid Tripp as you find and kill an intelligent lunatic called The Brain before he can put together a world-conquering robot army.

As for the delay, Lab Rats Studio told Pocket Gamer that, “we decided to add more features and functionality to the game to ensure that M.U.S.E. will be a polished and exciting game to play upon release.”

The developer also revealed that it “looks forward to partnering with Chillingo in the future.”

2)Facebook’s mobile users pass the 350m mark

by Zen Terrelonge

As daily logins to the social network have reached 500m

The reveal came from the f8 concerence in San Francisco as the social network now has 800 million users worldwide.

On top of the worldwide users, Facebook daily logins have hit over 500 million for the first time. This led Bret Taylor, Facebook CTO, to say 350 million users now access the platform via mobile device each month.

Facebook has recently released news of changes to the site, with its Timeline service, which has been created in order to show the content and activity that is most important to users.

The popularity of this among its 800 million users is yet to be discovered but Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg has said that the mobile can also expect to see revamped user profiles.(source:mobile-ent

3)Millennial: Android Mobile Ad Impressions Up 48 Percent, iOS Remains Flat

Leena Rao

Mobile ad network Millennial Media, is releasing its monthly report which gives a view into how each OS, device and manufacturer is performing on one of the largest remaining independent ad networks in the world. In August, Millennial actually combined connected devices and smartphones when breaking out the OS impression share. That’s significant because iOS and Android share can include tablets into factoring presence on the network. And last month, Android was in the top spot with a 54% share, while iOS was in second with a 28% share. Rim followed with 13% share.

In terms of growth, Android impressions (including both phones and tablets) grew 48% month-over-month globally. iOS impressions were relatively flat month-over-month, and interestingly Windows Phone 7 impressions saw major growth and increased 48% month-over-month.

Smartphones grew 6% month-over-month and took 72% of the impressions in August. Connected Devices and Feature Phones were tied with 14% of the impression share. In terms of impressions by type of connection, 32% of impressions came over Wi-Fi. Of these WI-Fi impressions 59% came from Smartphones (as opposed to connected devices or feature phones), and saw an 11% growth month-over-month.

Connected Devices, including Tablets, gaming devices, and eReaders, accounted for 34% of the Wi-Fi impressions on the network. In August 2010, feature phones accounted for 33% of Millennial’s network impressions, and this number has dropped to 14% in August 2011.

Millennial also breaks down ad spend from applications on the network, and in August Android grew 2% month-over-month and represented 49% of the Application Platform Mix. iOS followed with 41% share, with RIM taking a 8% share.

In August, News applications on the Android platform grew 26% month-over-month. Gaming applications have been the number one Application Category on Millennial’s network for over a year and in August, games represented 25% of the applications impressions, a 19% increase month-over-month.

Music & Entertainment application impressions grew 13% month-over-month and within the Music & Entertainment category, radio applications accounted for more than half of the impressions in August.

Similar to July’s findings, Apple continued to be the leading device manufacturer the network in August, representing 23% of the Top 15 Manufacturers impression share. The iPhone maintained the number one position on the Top 20 Mobile Phones ranking with 13% of the impression share.

HTC actually reclaimed the number two position on the Top 15 Manufacturers ranking in August, thanks to the manufacturer’s five devices on the Top 20 Mobile Phones list. Together, these HTC phones accounted for 11% of the Top 20 Mobile Phone impressions. Together, all Android phones
represented 32% of the Top 20 Mobile Phones impression share in August.

The past year has represented major growth for Millennial Media. The company just announced that 2010 revenue was $47.8 million, which is up over 3,000 percent from 2007 revenue of $1.5 million. And we know CEO and founder Paul Palmieri has had ambitions of taking the company public. In May, Bloomberg reported that Millennial was talking to bankers about an IPO, which could come in the Fall or in early 2012 and would value the company at a whopping $700 million to $1 billion (AdMob was sold to Google for $750 million).(source:techcrunch

4)Disney’s first original mobile character gets snappy in iPhone game

by Stuart Dredge

Swampy the alligator wants to know where his water is.

Mobile firms Rovio and Outfit7 have both talked about their ambitions to be ‘the next Disney’ with characters and brands spawned on mobile. Now Disney is taking them on, with its new iPhone game Where’s My Water?

Well, sort of. Disney says the game is notable for being its first to feature an original game character: an alligator named Swampy.

The game is a physics-based action title, with a focus on guiding water to Swampy’s bathtub in 80 levels. It’s been developed by the team behind JellyCar, an innovative iPhone game that was signed up by Disney earlier this year.

“Where’s My Water? exemplifies Disney’s approach to mobile game development, which combines a compelling story with high production value, and great gameplay,” says GM of mobile Bart Decrem, who himself joined Disney when it bought his company Tapulous.

An alligator in a 69p game shouldn’t be over-hyped in the wider scheme of Disney’s corporate strategy, but it is nevertheless interesting to see the company releasing original IP on mobile. Gamers will decide if Swampy can take a bite out of Angry Birds and Talking Tom Cat, though.(source:mobile-ent

5)Gameloft Commits Five Games To Sony’s Upcoming Tablets

by Frank Cifaldi

Prolific mobile developer Gameloft is on board with Sony’s upcoming line of tablet devices, and has committed to bringing five of its titles over to the devices.

According toa statement issued Friday, the company will port over five of its iPad titles, specifically Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD, N.O.V.A. 2 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance HD, Real Soccer 2011 HD, Spider-Man: Total Mayhem HD and Green Farm HD.

The titles will appear on both of Sony’s Android 3.0-powered tablets: the 9.4″ touch display, Tegra 2-powered Sony Tablet S ($499-$599), and the dual-screen Sony Tablet P.

“The high impact of the ‘Sony Tablet S’s’ large display along with the unique dual screen configuration of the ‘Sony Tablet P’ truly enhances the overall entertainment value of the gaming experience,” said Gameloft’s Gonzague de Vallois in a statement.

Gameloft is coming off of a financially flat first half due to increased R&D expenses, though says it is in a “healthy financial situation” as is on track to hit its growth target for the rest of the year. (source:gamasutra

6)Epic: Premium iOS games can still make a fortune

by Rob Crossley

Mobile games development can flourish without selling apps at rock-bottom prices, the CEO at Epic Games has said.

Tim Sweeney said his company has made “significant profit” in the iPhone games business, largely because of its debut iOS game Infinity Blade, which retails at the relatively high £3.99 and $5.99 price-points.

“Infinity Blade has proven that iPhone owners are hungry for high-end games with cutting-edge graphics,” Sweeney told Forbes.

“For a long time, the market was seen as a ‘race to the bottom’ with developers being squeezed into releasing apps for 99 cents or even free. Infinity Blade’s success shows that premium-quality apps can sell for more.”

Free-to-play games have become a driving force on smartphones, allowing users to try apps at no cost with the option to buy additional in-game goods. A recent study claimed that 72 per cent of iOS revenue has come from in-app sales.

Meanwhile, publishing giants such as EA and Gameloft are choking the competition with seasonal $0.99 sales deals. As a result, many studios insist on releasing games at their lowest prices to effectively compete.

But Sweeney believes the smartphone market is willing to buy premium content at an appropriate cost, as proven by Infinity Blade’s $10+ million revenues.

“We’re making significant profit here and, as a result, we’re doubling down on triple-A mobile game development with Unreal Engine 3′s graphical advancements at the centre of our strategy,” Sweeney said.

It is believed that Epic subsidiary studio Chair is now working on a new premium iOS title, though the company as a whole could be working on more than one mobile project.

Design director Cliff Bleszinski recently revealed that Epic is looking to partner with an external studio to finish development on the sequel to the XBLA game Shadow Complex. Chair had made the original but has moved onto another, as yet unknown, project.(source:develop-online

7)Magmic’s freemium BlackBerry game Texas Hold’em King LIVE hits one million unique players

by Jon Jordan

Of all the big mobile platforms, BlackBerry has the worst reputation for gaming, but that doesn’t mean that the RIM’s 70 million subscribers aren’t playing.

Canadian publisher Magmic, a long-term RIM supporter, has announced that its Texas Hold’em King LIVE game has been downloaded by over a million unique users in the 10 months since it launched.

Chatty hand

The freemium card game, which enables you to play against sharks from all over the world, includes 30 choices of avatar and 35 achievements, and has a chat system so you can communicate with those you’re beating/taking a beating from.

You’re provided with a daily bank of chips to play with, and – being a freemium title – you can buy more if you so desire. In celebration of its user milestone, you can get 150,000 chips for $6.99 for a limited time.(source:pocketgamer
