1)Smurfs’ Grabber latches onto iPhone, iPad with its puffy, white claws

by Joe Osborne

At this point, mobile gamers are blue with Smurf fever after what I like to call “The Summer of the Smurf.” To ring out this smurftastic summer with a bang is yet again Beeline Interactive, Capcom’s mobile games arm, with Smurfs’ Grabber. Released today–for free, mind you–to App Store, Smurfs’ Grabber puts players in control of a giant mechanical Smurf arm in what amounts to a grab machine.

Well, a grab machine with a purpose: It’s your job to not only grab as many ingredients from the ground within the allotted 60 seconds you have for each session, but to grab the right ones for a series of potions and other items. Between rounds, you can turn in these items in various quantities and combinations to unlock prizes, namely your fellow Smurfs. These Smurfs bring special powers into your gameplay sessions like dropping presents for bonuses or providing extra XP to level up.

As you continue to grab items, you’ll notice that the gameplay is bit more complicated than your standard grab machine. The ingredients have a tendency to do as they please, and will rearrange themselves randomly as you attempt to grab them. So, you can likely already imagine that timing is crucial in Smurfs’ Grabber. But don’t worry, you’ll get to improve your grabbing skills across three differently-themed grab machines with Papa, Smurfette and Greedy Smurf.(source:games

2)Former Crytek Director Senta Jakobsen Joins Ngmoco Sweden

by Mike Rose

Mobile games company Ngmoco has hired former Crytek director Senta Jakobsen to join its new Sweden studio as senior development director.

Jakobsen has worked in the industry for over 10 years, most recently as the senior development director at Crytek. Prior to that position, she was COO at Battlefield: Bad Company developer DICE.

Ben Cousins, the current general manager at Ngmoco Sweden, and previously the sole employee of the branch before Jakobsen joined, divulged the news via Twitter.

“Very happy to announce that joining Ngmoco Sweden today as employee #2 is Senta Jakobsen, senior development director,” he revealed.

“So happy to be able to welcome Senta back to Sweden and to have such a senior, experienced and respected person joining me to run the studio,” he continued.

Cousins was hired in June, leaving EA to form the new studio in Sweden, which will focus on creating free-to-play games for DeNA’s Mobage social gaming platform, as well as titles for a global audience. (source:gamasutra

3)Appscribe to offer unlimited premium apps for Android at a monthly fee

By: Charles West

AppScribe just unveiled a new premium subscription service for Android. AppScribe not only provides unlimited apps to subscribers, but increased exposure and greater revenue to developers.

The idea is AppScribe will give top-quality Android apps and games to its subscribers. Customers don’t have to worry about getting limited “lite” version applications, because apps and games included in the service are full versions and do not need in-app purchasing. Also, the service will give subscribers access to the entire AppScribe library of apps and games for a price roughly equal to purchasing one game per month. Not bad, right?

Appscribe is making a real concerted effort to making life easier for consumers and developers. In its release, the company points out that the Android Market is approaching 300,000 apps, and is becoming flooded with spam, games and apps of low quality and malware. “Many Android users have become frustrated trying to find apps and games in this huge sea,” also adding “quality developers are finding it hard to break even, much less make a profit in this crowded marketplace.”

This all sounds great, but AppScribe needs to make sure it doesn’t run into the same issues as the Amazon App Store when it comes to issuing proper compensation to Android developers. AppScribe’s premium subscription service will launch in September. How many of you would be interested in signing up for this kind of service?(source:intomobile

4)Mobile App Roundup: BoltJS, Funding, Mergers & More

By Christopher Mack

BoltJS for Building Mobile Web Apps — Facebook is apparently building a new platform by the name of BoltJS. It is a UI framework that is intended to help developers build mobile web applications in both HTML5 and Javascript. Additionally, as TechCrunch points out, the project currently focuses on mobile WebKit browsers, suggesting that BoltJS could be related to the secretive Project Spartan.(source:insidemobileapps

5)Square Enix appoints Clinton Foy as US COO to drive mobile, social, casual business

by Matt Sakuraoka-Gilman

Square Enix has announced the promotion of Clinton Foy to the position of Chief Operating Officer for its American operations.

In his new position, Foy will be tasked with leading the company’s business development initiatives, specifically in mobile, social, browser and free-to-play markets.

Foy has been with Square Enix for six years, holding the position of vice president of business and legal affairs as well as providing general counsel. Previously Foy held a position as an attorney at Heller Ehrman, working with clients such as Sony and Microsoft.

Aggressive initiatives

“We are pleased to announce the promotion of Clinton Foy to COO,” said Mike Fischer, president and CEO of Square Enix Inc.

“One of the key new responsibilities of the COO role will be to shape and drive more aggressive business development initiatives in free–to–play, social, mobile, browser, and emerging platforms.”

“Clinton’s valuable experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead our organisation in these important areas.”

Like other Japanese console publishers – notably Capcom, Konami and Cave – Square Enix is making a concerted effort to get into the fast growing mobile, social and casual markets.

6)Gamezebo Cribs: Nexon edition

By Andrew Webster

Nexon is best known for its free-to-play online games, and especially for the role playing sensation MapleStory, which has recently seen spin-offs on both Facebook and the iPhone. The developer has also created well known online games like Combat Arms and KartRider, and recently made moves to expand its presence in the world of social gaming by investing in the newly formed 6waves Lolapps. In this edition of Gamezebo Cribs we head deep inside Nexon’s American offices to see where those games get made.

“Our Community team sponsored a Nerf gun design competition for our game, Combat Arms, where players submitted their designs and the top 20 designs were shipped a Nerf gun to decorate and return for judging. The winner of the contest received an iPad 2 and all participants received a Combat Arms zip up hoodie and a new Razr laser gaming mouse.”

“The lunch area at the Nexon America offices has several picnic tables, a couple of TVs and various video gaming consoles that can be used during breaks and lunch.”

“To go with the theme of the rest of the office, the visitors to Nexon are met with a wooden chair swing and wooden furniture on an Astroturf lawn. In the background, trailers and gameplay footage of all Nexon games plays on a large mounted monitor. Additionally, several articles featuring Nexon America are posted on the wall.”

“Nexon has an open office environment that is sprinkled with different meeting ‘huts.’ Each hut has been decorated by a different team and hosts a different theme. This is an example of one of the meeting huts at Nexon.”

“Similar to the meeting huts, or smaller conference rooms, Nexon has a few larger conference rooms such as the one pictured here. It’s a little more casual and is great for having brainstorming sessions.”

“Along one of the main halls, a Lego wall was put up and employees are encouraged to design and build whatever they like. Here are a few examples of the fun things people put up.”(source:gamezebo
