1)iPad Owners Use New Apps Longer and Play Games More Often

By Dan Rowinski

Mobile application analytics company Localytics has spent time researching how users interact with their iPads and found that users spend the most time with news apps while games were the most frequented apps. Localytics measures usage sessions of apps that have it installed and the data in the study comes from monitoring when apps were opened and subsequently closed. Localytics findings show the cross-section of the app market that can be a good source for developers that want to understand how their audience is interacting with their applications.

Compared with the average user session of an iPad app, users used their news apps two-and-a-half times longer than the average app. Music apps, like Pandora or Spotify, averaged nearly two times the average usage. Sports, entertainment and games were the low items for average session length while games had the most sessions per month. Check out the charts below for more details.

Localytics notes that news apps generate the longest user sessions. That means that apps like Flipboard and Zite tend to be open longer than other apps. The company notes “iPad users appear to be playing short, more casual games, rather than in-depth time-consuming ones.” This may not be the truth though as time-consuming games, like Strategery or Order & Chaos can be closed or board games like chess can be closed and then re-opened to the same point in the game that the user left from. That would fit in well with the Pew Internet survey a few weeks ago that said that consumers are more likely to use their mobile when they are bored (often when travelling, per se).

Note the graph of the longest app session times.

Reference and health apps also do well in session length. These apps involve reading and research, which tend to be time consuming activities where people are out to accomplish a specific point, such as find the days news, business trends, recipe etc. Though reference apps have long user sessions, they do are not opened frequently in comparison to music, games or news. Music is not surprising for its long session length. For instance, my iPad has taken over as my primary point for music and plays like a radio all day while I work.

The antithesis is games. See the chart on session frequency.

Localytics notes, “the iPad’s reputation as a reading and gaming device appears to be well deserved.”(source:readwriteweb

2)Western European e-book market grew … Beyond Oblivion lines up smartphone … US mobile games revenues to top $1.5bn in 2011 says SNL Kagan

by Stuart Dredge

Company thinks those sales are being driven by freemium models.

Analyst firm SNL Kagan predicts that US mobile games revenues will top $1.53 billion this year, nearly double those in 2010, and accounting for 7.7% of the total US gaming market.

All Things Digital reports that in the fourth quarter of 2011 alone, the company expects US mobile games revenues to be as much as $439.4 million, with freemium games one of the key factors in the industry’s growth.

SNL Kagan has also produced a chart of the 10 top US publishers in terms of revenues, topped by EA Mobile and Gameloft, but with freemium publishers making their mark lower down.

DeNA-owned ngmoco takes third spot, followed by Angry Birds maker Rovio Mobile and Glu Mobile. Then it’s Capcom – a traditional gaming company riding the wave of freemium titles like Smurfs’ Village – Zynga, Sony Pictures Mobile, Namco Bandai and MocoSpace.

The latter’s inclusion is significant, since it’s focusing on HTML5-based mobile web games, rather than native downloadable titles.(source:mobile-ent

3)Rovio prepares for Angry Birds animation with appointment of ex-Fox exec Andrew Stalbow

by Jon Jordan

Continuing its roll up of senior executives, Rovio has bolstered its US team with the appointment of Andrew Stalbow as its North American general manager.

Unsurprisingly, he will work on growing the Angry Birds franchise, finding new partnerships and distribution channels for the forthcoming animated content, as well as supporting the launch of new IP.

Beyond Rio

Previously senior vice president of mobile at Fox Digital, where he worked with Rovio over Angry Birds Rio, Stalbow has worked at Hutchison 3G UK and Vodafone, also being vice president, international at Fox Mobile while based in London.

He was also responsible for app publishing and video licensing for Fox properties such as Glee, Avatar and The Simpsons.

“Working with Andrew on Angry Birds Rio was an excellent partnership,” said Mikael Hed, Rovio’s CEO.

“We’re very excited to have him on board for our continued expansion in North America and in the entertainment industry in particular.”

Recently, Rovio has hired David Maisel, former chairman of Marvel Studios as a special advisor, and acquired Finnish animation studio Kombo.(source:pocketgamer

4) Android Outpaces iPhone In 2011 U.S. Smartphone Sales

by Frank Cifaldi

Google’s Android operating system continues to lead U.S. smartphone sales and has increased its market share in recent months, according to research.

Market research firm The NPD Group has revealed that 52 percent of the smartphones sold in the United States during the second quarter of the year had a version of the Android operating system embedded.

That is in addition to the estimated 36 percent market share that Android enjoyed in the first quarter, according to separate research. It was the market leader then, too.

In second place again is Apple’s iOS operating system, which saw a slight rise at 29 percent. BlackBerry OS share fell 11 percent, said the company, while Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile, and webOS share was flat at less than 5 percent each.

Google, creator of the Android OS, recently purchased smartphone manufacturer Motorola for $12.5 billion. Google says that despite now owning a handset manufacturer, it “remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform.” (source:gamasutra

5)iSwifter on track to exceed $10M in revenue for app streaming (exclusive)

Dean Takahashi

iSwifter, a company that streams Flash-based Facebook games so they can be played on the iPad, said today that it expects to generate more than $10 million in revenue in 2011, based on current bookings.

That’s remarkably good traction for a startup that is still in its first year. Peter Relan, executive chairman of Burlingame, Calif.-based iSwifter, said in an interview that the company is having great success with the iSwifter app that it launched earlier this year. The iSwifter app uses streaming technology to deliver apps and games that would not otherwise work on an iPad. The fast growth of the business means that iSwifter is able to fund its own growth.

Flash games don’t work on the iPad because Apple and Adobe can’t come to an agreement about the multimedia technology. That’s a problem since a lot of popular Flash-based games are available on Facebook. That’s where the iSwifter application comes in — it can stream those Facebook games to a special browser in a user’s iPad. That streamed game functions just as if it were a native app stored on the iPad itself.

Rajat Gupta, founder of iSwifter, said in an interview that the company’s technology can be applied to many other kinds of apps. And Relan said iSwiter is having success licensing its technology to other kinds of companies, such as enterprises or healthcare companies that want to get their enterprise software to work on an iPad.

“We want to be the Netflix of applications,” Gupta said. Added Relan, “Games are just a leading indicator of what we can stream.”

Gupta said the company has eight employees now and would like to hire as many as 40 this year to expand its business. Among the new hires is Ajit Mayya, an eight-year veteran of VMware, who will lead iSwifter’s engineers as vice president of engienering. Mayya will hire a number of new engineers to build out the company’s platform.(source:venturebeat

6)Moneymen Robert Baird highlight iPad’s dominance of tablet market but suggest Amazon will disrupt it

by Jon Jordan

The current consensus seems to be that despite the attempts of many manufacturers, the tablet market remains – largely – the iPad market.

HP’s much-liked TouchPad has been killed off, although that process has demonstrated mass popularity, albeit it a $100 price point.

Acer, Asus, LG, HTC and Dell have all failed in their attempts, while RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook remains a work-in-progress. Motorola’s Xoom was nice, but too expensively. Presumably, its new relationship with Google will change the company’s future device trajectory.

Perhaps Samsung has managed to compete best, although its Galaxy Tab was too early to market and the Tab 10.1 launch has been bedevilled by Apple legal complaints.

Out in front

This messy situation is well demonstrated in a survey from the analyst arm of asset management company Robert Baird, which asked 531 people which tablets they were interested in. Even allowing multiple answers, only the TouchPad broke into double digits (this was before HP’s announcement).

Still, Robert Baird analyst Colin Sebastian thinks there is one strong competitor on the way.

He expects Amazon’s yet-to-be-announced Android tablet to be a game-charger, in part because of its sub-$300 price point, expected as Amazon subsidises the initial cost for the long term revenue gained when users buy items through its various stories.

Sebastian forecasts sales of up to 3 million units in the first year.(source:pocketgamer

7)Mobile lawsuit wars: an infographic

by Tim Green

One for lawyers to put on the wall in a nice frame.

Last autumn an excellent infographic did the rounds neatly summarising the spaghetti of lawsuits between various handset and platform companies.

It’s woefully out of date now, so well done to Thomson Reuters for creating a new one.(source:mobile-ent)   http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/read/mobile-lawsuit-wars-an-infographic/015234

8)Infographic: Mobile advertising battle of the sexes

By Darrell Etheringt

When it comes to mobile advertising at least, men and women tend to differ. According to a new infographic from mobile advertising and marketing firm inneractive released Monday, men are more likely to click on mobile ads, and also more likely to be Android users. Women are far more likely to use BlackBerry devices, and a bit more likely to click on ads in IM and social networking apps. Check out the full infographic below, and see if you fit in with the gender biases revealed by inneractive’s data.

Note: In the infographic, CTR stands for “click through rate,” which measures how often users click ads; eCPM is the effective cost-per-thousand impressions, which means how much it costs to show your ad 1,000 times in an app.(source:gigaom
