1)Gamevil hits accumulative total of 50 million mobile game downloads

by Jon Jordan

Having just posted Q2 2011 sales of $9 million, up 46 percent year-on-year, things are going well at Korean mobile publisher Gamevil as it builds out its external development business.

Indeed, Korean games website This is Game is reporting the company has now passed the total of 50 million mobile downloads.

As it generally operates using a paid download with in-app purchase model rather than a straight free-to-play model, this makes the total more impressive, although it will stretch back to the company’s creation in 2000, and the majority of sales will be Java games for feature phone.

Big guns

Gamevil generally doesn’t break out download totals in its financials, but it did point out it planned to release 21 games in Korea during 2011 and 20 games overseas.

As part of this drive to increase the number of games it releases, it recently set up a $10 million development fund.(source:pocketgamer

2)55.9% of Android owners still use Froyo, only 24.3% now running Gingerbread

by Matt Gilman

Despite Gingerbread (Android 2.3) having been out in the wild for 9 months now, the majority of Android owners still run their devices on Froyo (2.2).

According to a recent survey posted on GetJar for the 14 days ending 1 August, Gingerbread (2.3) is being used by 24.3 percent of devices. That’s only a 3 percent rise since last month’s report. It’s a far cry from Froyo (2.2) which currently runs on 55.9 percent of Android devices.

3)Immersive mafia-based Facebook game Crime City heading to iPhone later this month

by Alex Taylor

Crime City, a game that strikes this writer as a cross between Grand Theft Auto and Habbo Hotel (there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say), is expanding its horizons, moving into an iPhone neighbourhood near you later in August.

This popular Facebook game takes place in New York, and follows your (hopefully) meteoric ascent to mob boss to end all mob bosses.

Not only does Funzio’s mafia-based sim provide you with the typical sandbox environment – allowing you to steal cars, rob civilians, or just perform menial tasks – it also encourages you to expand your empire by building and improving various structures around the city.

The story mode contains over 200 separate missions and objectives to complete, for those that prefer a more linear structure.

The strongest pull of Crime City, however, is liable to be found in the multiplayer. With the ability to both team up with, and steal everything from, friends in the game, there is a possibility for huge guilds, syndicates, and groups to form.

Crime City will launch on the App Store later this month. In the meantime, watch the the trailer below.(source:pocketgamer

4)Survey says consumers don’t trust Apple, Google, or Facebook when it comes to mobile payments

By: Stefan Constantinescu

Findings from a survey conducted on 500 U.S. based “online shoppers” by Ogilvy & Mather, one of the world’s largest advertising firms, suggests that consumers don’t trust companies like Apple, Facebook, or Google when it comes to mobile payments. In fact, Facebook scored the worst, being trusted by only 12.1% of the people surveyed. Microsoft, at 22.3%, is trusted by more people than Google, at 19.5%. Apple is trusted by a little more than 1 out of every 5 consumers, 22.9%, but they’re still behind the United States Postal Service at 24.6% trust. Who is leading? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, with 39.6%, 35.9%, and 35.8% respectively. What’s shocking is how many people trust PayPal, at 34.3%. What does this mean for you? Not much since right now the current mobile payment landscape is a battlefield between card issuers such as Visa and MasterCard, operators, who actually teamed up to form Isis in an attempt to get the ball rolling on mobile payments, and the new kids on the block, like Apple, Google, Nokia, etc.(source:intomobile

5)Rovio, EA Urge Court To Let Apple Join Lodsys Patent Suit

by Tom Curtis

Electronic Arts and Angry Birds developer Rovio have submitted a federal court filing insisting that Apple should be allowed to intervene in a patent-infringement lawsuit against developers of iPhone applications.

Texas-based Lodsys, LLC sued a number of iOS developers including EA, Rovio, Mega Poker Online developer Combay, Inc, and more back in June, on the grounds that these companies allegedly violated the company’s patent for an in-app upgrade model. Lodsys is demanding a percentage of the revenues made from this patent violation.

Apple previously insisted that it should be able to intervene on the legal proceedings, saying that its own license with Lodys covers the company’s partners and customers, including the accused developers.

In support of Apple, EA and Rovio said in its court filing, “The participation of Apple as a party in this lawsuit is critical to the development of the very evidence needed to establish what may prove to be a complete defense to the infringement claims in this action.”

According to Bloomberg, Lodsys has previously objected to Apple’s request, arguing that EA and Rovio both have the resources to handle their own defense, and that there is no evidence that the suit influences Apple’s relationship with developers.

Other developers affected by the lawsuit include Atari, Square Enix, Take-Two, Twitteriffic developer Iconfactory, Inc, Labyrinth developer Illusion Labs, as well as Michael G. Karr, Quickoffice, Inc., Richard Shinderman, and Wulven Games. (source:gamasutra

6)Apple scores a couple of points against rivals in usability and support

Dean Takahashi

Apple, which is gunning to be the world’s most valuable public company this week, has scored a couple of points against its rivals in independent usability and support assessments.

Those are small victories for Apple, but they aren’t always obvious to people considering purchases based on sticker price or subscription plans alone.

ClickFox, a firm that analyzes customer experience data, said it found that iPhones cost less to support than Android or BlackBerry devices. The study was based on an examination of support calls received by North American mobile phone carriers. The reason is that it often takes multiple agents to resolve a BlackBerry or Android user’s problem, which means calls have to be transferred.

Harvard University also did a video usability study comparing the ease of use for tasks performed on the iPhone 4, a Samsung Focus running Windows Phone 7, a BlackBerry Storm from Research in Motion, and an HTC Thunderbolt Android phone. The study used novice consumers to perform various tasks and found that the winners in usability were the iPhone 4G and Windows Phone 7.

The study was conducted by a summer school class taught by Harvard professor Dennis Galleta, who is teaching a course on Human Factors in Information Systems Design. That’s not exactly a huge scientific research project, but it does show what the experience of neophyte users is like when performing tasks like making a call, adding a contact, and sending a text message. Check out the study in the video below. It’s quite amusing to watch what happens when a user runs into a complete brick wall on performing a task. Android didn’t do so hot, and BlackBerry appeared to be utterly inscrutable to the new users.(source:venturebeat
