3)Zipline Games(游戏邦注:该公司开发了基于Lua编程语言的Moai游戏开发平台,支持开发者快速创建iOS、Android手机游戏以及云游戏)日前宣布微软游戏工作室主管Shane Kim加入公司董事会。

1)Gamevil’s Smartphone Revenues Climb 259% to $5.6M In Second Quarter

By Kim-Mai Cutler

South Korea’s Gamevil said smartphone revenue more than doubled from the same time a year ago to $5.6 million in the second quarter, fueled by titles like its RPG series Zenonia and Baseball Superstars. The company also had a hit last quarter through Air Penguin, a platforming game the company produced with a tiny South Korean gaming studio called Enterfly.

Overall revenue was up 34 percent year-over-year to $9 million with net income of $3.5 million. While Gamevil is showing rapid growth in line with the rest of the industry, its smartphone business is still slightly smaller than those of other companies which have come forward with earnings in the last month. Glu Mobile said it brought in $9.4 million in smartphone revenue this quarter while Capcom said it earned $10.9 million from games on smartphones and social networking sites. Gaming giant Electronic Arts said its mobile revenue climbed 10 percent year-over-year to $57 million in the last quarter (but that figure would include feature phone business).

Still, Gamevil is showing much faster growth than many of its rivals; the company earned about $2.8 million in smartphone revenue last quarter. Given how well the Air Penguin partnership worked out, the company is ramping up deals with third-party developers. It recently announced a $10 million fund that independent studios can apply for to fund the production and marketing of their games.(source:insidemobileapps

2)Angry Birds Bad Piggies’ Egg Recipes book available for pre-order

by Stuart Dredge

Rovio’s next offshoot from its game franchise gets set for $19.99-a-pop debut.

Rovio Mobile has made tens of millions from its Angry Birds games, not to mention their spin-off plush toys. Now it’s setting its sights on the cookbook market. Bad Piggies Egg Recipes has just been made available for pre-order at the company’s own webstore.

The 96-page book costs $19.99, and does what it says on the tin: lots of egg-related recipes, with a focus on the pig characters from the Angry Birds games.

Or, as Rovio puts it: “Be a pig for a day, no worries in the world, no Angry Birds trying to knock you down. The kitchen is your pigpen and life’s good! So go ‘head, crack an egg or two and fling your awesome self to new levels of egg-cellence with these easy and fuss-free (for the most part) recipes, addictively fun activities and impressive party moves. From the classics to off the wall, these top-secret egg recipes will fill your tummy and tickle your brain!”

Will the pigs give Jamie Oliver and Delia Smith a run for their money in the print game? The book is expected to ship on 10 September.(source:mobile-ent

3)Former Microsoft games chief joins Zipline Games board

Dean Takahashi

Zipline Games, creator of the Moai game development platform, announced today it has recruited former Microsoft game studio chief Shane Kim to its board.

Kim ran the internal game development studio at Microsoft until 2009. By that time, he had put in 19 years at Microsoft and left to spend more time with his family. He took some time off and more recently said that he was getting back into the game business as an advisor to startups. It shows how the talent from the traditional game industry is becoming useful in the new game industry where startups focus on mobile and social games.

Kim told me at the recent Casual Connect game conference in Seattle that he became interested in Seattle-based Zipline Games, which was a finalist at our GamesBeat 2011 game startup competition, because of its cool technology for making cross-platform mobile games. Zipline created its Moai game development platform with tools based on the Lua scripting language and a back-end system for running mobile games. The system promises rapid development of iOS (Apple iPhone) and Android mobile games and cloud-based game services.

“I’ve looked at a lot of companies but this is the rare case where I decided to join the board,” Kim said.

Todd Hooper, chief executive of Zipline Games, also said at the time that he appreciated Kim’s deep knowledge of the game business and his advice about the Moai strategy. Jordan Weisman‘s new game, Crimson, is being built on the Moai platform. Bungie Aerospace will publish the game from Weisman’s Harebrained Schemes.

At Microsoft, Kim joined the PC game division in the early days when Microsoft’s only big properties were Flight Simulator and Golf. With his boss, Ed Fries, he helped grow the division with games like Age of Empires. Then he helped the game group get ready for the launch of the Xbox game console in 2001.

Kim got his big chance after Fries, the longtime chief of Microsoft Game Studios, resigned in 2004. Kim was appointed to that job and helped the company develop its all-important line-up for the launch of the Xbox 360 in 2005. Among the titles Kim and his lieutenants had to manage were Halo 2, Gears of War, Fable, and Forza Motorsport. While Fries had to commission a lot of new games for the original Xbox, Kim had to pare back, cutting a lot of unprofitable game projects such as Microsoft’s various massively multiplayer online games. Still, he had budgets in the tens of millions for dollars for some games and ran studios with more than 1,000 employees.(source:venturebeat

4)Google acknowledges Android developers getting stiffed

by Charles West

It seems like the app compensation scandal with Android developers has continued to grow more and more by the day. In a report from The Register, some Android app developers aren’t receiving the earnings they’ve generated through web-based Market sales. Google’s Android Market support forums are full of devs stating that there are discrepancies with the orders being charged and the payout they’ve received each month.

This story has been brewing since reports tracing back to the end of last year, with a few developers noticing a mismatch between sales and receipts. Unfortunately, this problem only escalated with developers receiving a bum deal in the Amazon Appstore’s “Free App of the Day.” In the situation with Amazon, the prevailing thought was that Amazon paid developers 20 percent of their normal sale price and gave the app favored promotion.

In addressing this compensation issue, The Register notes rumblings of a “Developers’ Union” and there is even a petition going around to renegotiate sales tax, initiate a removal appeal process, and more. In response to this developer revolt, Google employee HeidiLC posted this response on behalf of the company:

Thanks for posting and for your patience. We’re aware of the issue, and we’re working on fixing it. Once the fix goes out (soon!), orders should be moved to the correct state, which will enable disbursement amounts to be recovered. So if your July activity payouts were underpaid, you will be notified, and your September 1 payout will contain the missing amounts.Sincere apologies for any inconvenience this has caused, and thanks again for posting your reports of the problem here.

I hope Google is taking this matter serious, working on a fix to put the flames out to this media firestorm. This no doubt puts Google in a bad light, and if not addressed it could become detrimental when it comes losing devs to other emerging platforms.(source:androinica

5)A Review of Quarterly Earnings for iOS, Android Gaming Companies

By Kim-Mai Cutler

We’ve created a little cheat sheet for industry observers summarizing smartphone earnings and growth for the second quarter (or first quarter, depending on the company’s fiscal calendar). We also put in privately-held freemium gaming companies for which you can guesstimate earnings based on top-grossing titles. Given how publicly-traded companies are performing with both freemium and paid app monetization on a quarterly basis, we’re looking at a handful of privately-held companies that will probably comfortably cross $50 million in annual revenue this year. Also keep in mind that everyone’s market capitalization is down significantly because of the global stock market rout.

Publicly-Traded Gaming Companies

Glu Mobile:

Smartphone Revenue: $9.4 million last quarter, up 58 percent year-over-year

Market Cap: $168.8 million

Hits: Gun Bros, Contract Killer

Number of Titles Consistently in Top Grossing 50: Varies widely, depending on launches. Zero to two on iOS. The company currently has four in Android’s top-grossing 50.

Capcom:

Smartphone Revenue: Up to $10.9 million last quarter came from smartphones and social networking sites. It’s not clear how much of that came from the Facebook version versus the iOS version of the Smurf’s Village game.

Market Cap: $1.76 billion

Hits: Smurf’s Village, Zombie Cafe

Number of Titles Consistently in Top Grossing 50: Usually at least one on iOS. Capcom hasn’t had a major hit on Android.

Gamevil:

Smartphone Revenue: $5.6 million last quarter, up 269 percent year-over-year

Market Cap: $231.7 million

Hits: Air Penguin, Zenonia, Baseball Superstars, Colosseum Heroes, Air Penguin

Number of Titles Consistently in Top Grossing 50: Varies. Sometimes one to two on iOS and one to two on Android.

Electronic Arts:

Mobile Revenue: $57 million last quarter, up 10 percent year-over-year. EA doesn’t break out smartphone revenue, so this counts feature phone revenue.

Market Cap: $6.01 billion

Hits: Bejeweled Blitz, The SHIFT racing games, Tetris, Sims 3

Number of Titles Consistently in Top Grossing 50: Also varies widely. It’s currently four (with two titles from recently acquired PopCap Games), but sometimes it races closer to 10 when the company has sales.

Gameloft:

Revenue: Gameloft did 23 million euros ($32.7 million) in smartphone and tablet-related sales in the first half of this year, averaging out to $16.3 million a quarter. The second quarter is likely to be much bigger than the first though. Smartphone and tablet revenue is up 55 percent year-over-year.

Market Cap: $443 million

Hits: Order & Chaos, Asphalt 6

Number of Titles Consistently in Top Grossing 50: Varies widely from zero to three and possibly more, depending on when Gameloft has sales. Gameloft has one title in Android’s top 50 grossing currently.

Privately-Held Gaming Companies

Pocket Gems:

Hits: Tap Zoo, Tap Pet Hotel (with more coming soon)

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Two, and they’re almost always in the top 10, if not the top 5 on iOS. The company doesn’t have any presence on Android, but it’s coming soon.

Revenue: Undisclosed, but it would likely be above Glu’s $9.4 million per quarter. Since Smurf’s Village may be doing about $3 million a month, it’s possible that Pocket Gems may be around or above $5 million a month with the two of the highest-grossing games in the iOS store.

Funding: $5 million from Sequoia Capital, angels.

Zynga* (soon to be publicly traded):

Hits: Words With Friends and Hanging With Friends via the Newtoy acquisition. Zynga Poker. Cityville Hometown has been a decent performer with a ranking usually in the 30s or 40s.

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Usually around three on iOS. Zynga has launched some games on Android, but it has yet to build a strong presence there.

Revenue: Overall first quarter revenue was $235.4 million. The company does not break out mobile revenue.

Funding: $845 million from Google, Digital Sky Technologies, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Union Square Ventures and others.

Storm8:

Hits: World War, Fashion Story, iMobsters, Bakery Story, Restaurant Story, Vampires Live

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Usually four to six on iOS and around 10 to 12 on Android.

Revenue: Also probably easily above Glu’s $9.4 million in smartphone revenue a quarter.

Funding: No external funding to date, although there are rumors of a $300 million round on a $1 billion valuation.

Rovio Mobile:

Hits: Angry Birds and all of the brands’ extensions.

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Usually three and all of them are variations on Angry Birds.

Revenue: Undisclosed. It would be extremely hard to predict or benchmark off of publicly-traded mobile gaming companies because Rovio gets many special one-off deals with carriers and entertainment companies like Twentieth Century Fox. Rovio also derives more revenue from advertising compared to the rest of these companies.

Funding: $42 million from Atomico Ventures and Accel Partners

Game Insight:

Hits:  Paradise Island

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Varies widely. Sometimes they have two on iOS and sometimes they have none. On Android, however, they control the highest-grossing game Paradise Island.

Revenue: Unknown, but the company did say it was making $1 million per month in net revenue from Paradise Island on Android in July.

Funding: Undisclosed

TinyCo:

Hits: Tiny Zoo

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Usually one, Tiny Zoo.

Funding: $18 million from Andreessen Horowitz

Z2Live:

Hits: TradeNations, MetalStorm: Online

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Varies between zero and two.

Revenue: Likely just under or around Glu Mobile’s runrate of $9.4 million per quarter given that the company’s games hover around the same ranking levels on iOS. Z2Live doesn’t really have an Android presence though.

Funding: The company raised a round of undisclosed size from Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Madrona Venture Group.

Crowdstar:

Hits: Top Girl

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: One

Funding: $23 million from Intel Capital, Time Warner, The9 and other angels

Addmired:

Hits: Original Gangstaz

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Two at the moment on iOS. Usually their titles are below 25, but Original Gangstaz has been climbing as of late.

Funding: Addmired has seed funding from incubator YCombinator.

The Playforge:

Hits: Zombie Farm

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Usually one.

Funding: They’re bootstrapped, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see them take funding at some point.

Kama Games:

Hits: Texas Poker

Number of Titles in Top Grossing 50: Usually one. Kama Games recently acquired the IP behind a number of games like Mall Party, so they’ve been pushing these titles higher through cross-promotion.

Funding: No outside venture funding. The company was founded by a supermarket magnate in Siberia.(source:insidemobileapps
