1)Mobile jobs (especially Android) grow stronger, despite lame June job figures

Meghan Kelly

Only 18,000 new payrolls were added in the month of June. Mobile jobs, however, seem to be escaping the doom and gloom.

The mobile industry continues to skid around unemployment. There were plenty of jobs for Android, iPhone and HTML5 developers, according to a report by Freelancer.com. That’s further proof that mobile is becoming a necessary part of the lives of both consumers and businesses.

Android developers had the easiest time finding new jobs, with employment growing to 1,702 employed developers — up 20 percent from 1,419 in the first quarter this year. They beat out Apple’s iPhone, where employment only rose 9 percent. While there are significantly more iPhone developers, now 2985, Freelancer.com estimates that if Android continues to grow this quickly it will surpass iPhone jobs by 2012.

Jobs did not just surface in the smart phone category. The number of jobs for iPad developers rose by 11 percent.

The number of employed developers working with HTML5 — which is seen as a successor to Flash, one of the largest programming infrastructures on the web — rose by a whopping 34 percent in the second quarter. That’s because there’s continued debate between on whether HTML5-powered mobile web apps will dominate over native apps — like those on the Apple App Store.

Jobs for Flash developers fell 10 percent. HTML5 won where Flash lost and is receiving further hype after Arcade Fire’s win at the Cannes Lions. Their video, The Wilderness Down, uses HTML5 to integrate a running man and your personal location of choice.

As to be expected, however, Blackberry developer jobs fell. There were 497 BlackBerry operating system developers employed in the second quarter this year, down from 526 in the first quarter.

The overall mobile industry is on the ups projected to reach $1.3 trillion in revenue this year, with the US leading in financial gains.(source:venturebeat

2)Storm8 comes on strong with three new Android games

Dean Takahashi

Storm8 has launched three strong games on Android mobile devices in recent weeks, bringing to 13 the number of titles the mobile game company has on Google’s mobile operating system. The titles are simple simulation and role-playing games — City Story, Fashion Story and Zoo Story. Graphically, they are like many other mobile games already available.

But Storm8′s games aren’t anything to laugh at. The Redwood City, Calif.-based company has had more than 210 million downloads, 5 billion play sessions, and 18 billion minutes of games played. About 20 billion meals are served daily in its games. Four billion items are sold daily. And 100 million crops are planted daily. These kinds of actions suggest big revenue opportunities for Storm8, since its games on Android are free-to-play titles, where users play for free but pay real money for virtual goods.

City Story, Fashion Story and Zoo Story are being formally announced today, although they have quietly launched in the past few weeks on Android. These games were created by the company’s TeamLava internal game development studio, and they’re evidence that the company plans to be a leader on Android, said Perry Tam (pictured), chief executive and co-founder, in an interview. Now, 75 percent of Storm8′s games are on both Android and the iPhone.

According to mobile analytics firm Flurry, about 65 percent of the revenue from the top 100 grossing games in the App Store in the U.S. came from the free-to-play business model. Back in January, only 39 percent of the revenue from the top 100 games were free-to-play.

The company says that it saw its first $1 million revenue day earlier this month. Tam said he is bullish about Android because of the recent launch of in-app purchases, which enable someone to buy something like a virtual good without leaving a game. Since integrating in-app purchases on its Android titles, Storm8 has seen a 60 percent increase in Android revenue. The company launched its first Android title a year ago.

Since last year, Storm8′s user base has grown by 300 percent. Every title released by Storm8 has reached the top 10 free apps in the Apple App Store, Tam said. And all of the games consistently appear in the top 25 grossing apps list on the App Store. Top titles include iMobsters, World War, and Vampires Live. Internally produced titles include Bakery Story, Restaurant Story, and Fashion Story. The games are social and customizable.(source:venturebeat

3)Kickanotch Raises $500,000 For Its Mobile Marketing And App Monetization Platform

Rip Empson

Kickanotch Mobile, a mobile marketing services startup based in the outskirts of Kansas City, announced today that it has raised $500,000 in seed funding. The round was led by six angel investors and “incentivized by” Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation, a private/public partnership created by the state of Kansas to promote technology-based economic development and support local entrepreneurship. The startup plans to use this infusion of capital to continue expanding its cloud-based technology and services, as well as its mobile platform, and to ramp up hiring efforts.

Kickanotch, formerly known as PRONTO! Mobile, launched its mobile application and mobile marketing platform services back in May to offer TV broadcasters, radio stations, publishers and corporations a way to increase brand exposure and better utilize mobile revenue channels and consumer engagement opportunities. The startup works with media companies and small-to-medium-sized businesses to design a custom mobile strategy, assisting businesses in the design and implementation of mobile apps and features that enable them to make customized (and engaging) advertising campaigns and mobile apps.(source:techcrunch

4)Eric Schmidt Comments On Google+’s Success, Claims “Millions” Of Users

Alexia Tsotsis

Speaking at a press event on Thursday at the Allen & Co conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, former Google CEO and now Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt gave a 70 minute talk to the relatively few reporters that are here about various topical Google issues, including the most topical of Google issues, the launch of Google+.

When asked by a reporter how he would gauge the success of Google+ Schmidt replied, validly, “Well it’s been out for a week!” before going on to say that the biggest marker of its success was the fact that “An infinite amount of people are unhappy because they don’t have their invitation.” He later went on to say that the amount of people who had invitations but weren’t let in because of high demand was the greatest problem the service was facing. “We’re reviewing it on Monday,” he said.

Schmidt also seemed pleased that people seemed to understand that Google+ was different than Facebook.

“Circles is particularly well suited to the contact list you have in your phone, we have a somewhat different view of privacy. We tried to build a system that you could use for the relationships over time. The people who built the Internet did not get a stable version of identity; You need identity, in the sense that you are a person, this is who you are these are your friends and so on … The issue on the Internet is not the lack of Facebook, the issue on the Internet is the lack of identity. “

When asked by reporters whether Google planned eventually to fill out Google+ with other products, Schmidt answered, “Yeah, and there’s a lot coming,” saying that business accounts and ads are expected, assuming Google+ continues to grow. ”We test stuff and when it works we put a lot more emphasis on it,” he said.

When pressed to reveal how many people were part of the Google+ beta currently Schmidt replied, “I don’t know but it’s millions, it’s a lot.”(source:techcrunch

5)The social web still has a lot of room to grow

By Colleen Taylor

Tweet The web may be more social now than ever before — but according to a recent study, there is still a lot more room to grow.

Fewer than half of the world’s most highly trafficked websites link to either Facebook or Twitter on their front pages, according to new research conducted by SEO firm BrightEdge. The report didn’t provide details on how many top websites link to both Facebook and Twitter. The BrightEdge study, called the “Social Share Report,” looks at the 10,000 most highly trafficked sites on the Internet and tracks their month-over-month adoption of trends of social plugins and tools.

Here is a graph representation of the study’s findings:

“This is clearly a missed opportunity for the brands that own web properties that are not ‘social aware,’” BrightEdge wrote in the report. “They are missing out on a massive audience engagement driver as the major social networks have garnered quite a following with Facebook alone boasting a mind boggling 700 million active users spending over 750 billion minutes per month on the site.” In fact, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg confirmed at a press event this week that the social networking site’s user base now has more than 750 million users.

The study did have a silver lining for fans of the social web: The world’s top websites are adopting social media plug-ins at a fast clip. Both the Google “+1″ button and the Facebook “Like” button saw an uptick in adoption during the monthly July report period. The Facebook “Like” button is by far the most popular social media plug-in, as it is installed in nearly 11 percent of the top website’s front pages。(source:gigaom

6)More Anime-Based Games For Mobage: DeNA Cooperates With Tatsunoko

by Dr. Serkan Toto

It seems DeNA wants even more anime-based social games for Mobage: the company just announced a partnership with Tatsunoko Production, a major anime production company based out of Tokyo.

Tatsunoko has been producing anime for decades, including Speed Racer, Robotech, Honeybee Hutch, Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets, G-force) or Time-Bokan. Under the agreement with DeNA, some of these titles will be turned into “content” on Mobage, for example by using illustrations and character from those anime for decorations in emails, avatars and – of course – social games.

The social games based on Tatsunoko IP planned for the next months are:

Tatsunoko All Stars ULTIMATE CARD BATTLE (July)

Akubi Girl (August)

Gatchaman (September)

Time-Bokan (September)

Speed Racer (October)

DeNA plans to roll out these titles on smartphones and feature phones. Last month, the company signed a similar deal with anime production company Aniplex.(source:serkantoto

7)EA’s Playfish to Bring Pet Society, Restaurant City Brands to iOS

By AJ Glasser

One of the last few big social gaming companies yet to make a serious debut on mobile, EA’s Playfish is bringing Pet Society and Restaurant City to iOS later this summer. Both are standalone games rather than companions to their Facebook parents, yet one comes with a much deeper Facebook integration than the other one. We’re seeing lots of social gaming companies experiment on this front when it comes to mobile platforms; Crowdstar, for example, chose OpenFeint to provide social features for its recent title Top Girl.

Though Pet Society is one of the oldest pet games in the genre on Facebook, Pet Society: Vacation is entering a very competitive genre on iOS with multiple zoo games, along with Pocket Gems’ Tap Pet Hotel.

As for the Facebook product, it’s never recovered the monthly active user or daily active user numbers it enjoyed at its peak in winter of 2009, but it has had a bit of an uptick in the last 30 days.

Restaurant City will come to iOS in a faithful port of the Facebook game subtitled “Gourmet Edition.” Though the game uses Facebook Connect to find friends, it does not have integration with its Facebook parent.

Again, while Restaurant City was an original restaurant sim for Facebook, it faces stiff competition on iOS from games like TeamLava’s Bakery Story and Restaurant Story.

Meanwhile on Facebook, Restaurant City has slowed down in last 12 months, down more than 50% in both daily active users and monthly active users since August 2010 to today’s figures of 5.1 million MAU and 1.2 million DAU. As a percentage of MAU, DAU has remained between 20% and 26%.(source:insidemobileapps
