推动业务发展,RealNetworks公司或关闭游戏部门

据彭博社报道,美国RealNetworks公司首席执行官鲍勃·金博尔(Bob Kimball)在日前的采访中表示,今年他接任这一职位的主要工作重心是削减生产成本,叫停运营不善的项目,但在2011年会将目标锁定公司的业务发展。

金博尔表示,他刚走马上任时为公司的运营设立了三个目标:简化管理、重组业务、发展新项目。他称自己很满意公司在前两个目标上所取得的进步,认为发展新项目是RealNetworks明年的主要运营方向。

据游戏邦了解,金博尔是在今年1月RealNetworks创始人罗布·格拉泽(Rob Glaser)离任时开始挑起大梁,已关闭音乐部门Rhapsody,砍削3000万美元的营业费用,裁掉25%的副总裁级别人员。而且还计划关闭旗下的游戏部门GameHouse,因为该公司已经开始将目光转向手机及社交游戏领域。

金博尔称公司仍有放弃游戏运营项目的打算,但也会考虑对外出售,无论执行哪种方案,对RealNetworks的股东来说都大有禆益,但现在还不急于脱手,因为GameHouse的毛利率仍然很高,在RealNetworks旗下进行业务调整也不会太困难。

为了增加营收来源,RealNetworks正在密切关注社交及手机游戏的市场动向,以及用户云服务,比如该公司在本月推出的Unifi。Unifi支持用户同步电脑、手机平台上的照片、音乐及其他内容。

另外,RealNetworks还打算扩大与手机运营商的业务合作范围,向运营商出售更多服务内容。该公司一直为运营商提供手机铃音、音乐、视频等服务内容,并希望可以通过运营商渠道推广Unifi这项服务。

RealNetworks Inc. Chief Executive Officer Bob Kimball said he needs to do a better job boosting growth in 2011 after focusing on cost-cutting and closing underperforming businesses in his first year at the helm.

Kimball, speaking in an interview today, said he started out with three main goals: simplify, restructure and grow. He said he’s pleased with progress on two of the three.

“Growing is the thing we really have to start to do now,” he said at the Seattle headquarters of RealNetworks. “That’s just going to be feathered in over the course of the coming year.”

Kimball took over when company founder Rob Glaser stepped down in January. He’s spun off the company’s Rhapsody music business, cut more than $30 million in operating expenses and eliminated 25 percent of the company’s vice president-level staff. A planned spinoff the company’s games business is on ice for now as the unit shifts its focus to mobile and social- networking games, said Kimball, who was acting CEO before being named to the position on a permanent basis in July.

The company still plans to spin off the business and would also consider a sale, whichever is of greater benefit to RealNetworks’ shareholders, Kimball said. He said he’s in no rush because the unit, called GameHouse, has high gross margins. GameHouse will have an easier time making changes needed to shift its business while part of RealNetworks, he said.

Synchronizing Content

To increase revenue, RealNetworks is focusing on areas including social and mobile games and consumer cloud services such as Unifi that the company unveiled this month. Unifi will let customers synchronize photos, music and other content between computers and mobile devices.

The company also wants to boost its business of selling services to mobile carriers. RealNetworks sells ringback tones as well as music and video services to carriers who want to provide them to subscribers. The company plans to sell Unifi through carriers, Kimball said.

He plans to complete the restructuring in the first half of 2011, at which point the company will need to focus on developing and releasing more new products like Unifi.

“We realize we are not going to be the company we are all here to create if all we do is cut,” he said. (source:bloomberg)
