McAfee’s Dave DeWalt: Next Big Threat? Apps

The growing popularity of mobile devices and their many applications is already being exploited by hackers who are in the game to steal valuable personal information.

“We think 2011 is the year of the threat to the mobile device, particularly the mobile app,” Dave DeWalt, McAfee Inc CEO, told The Canadian Press.

With new computer tablets coming out and a multitude of new smart devices, “there’s an ecosystem of application developers who are building applications . . . and then actually stealing from you,” DeWalt told the newspaper.

As consumers in the United States, Canada and Western Europe begin using their cellphones as their wallets, antivirus software will either be embedded into the device or provided by a telecom company, he explained. He also predicted antivirus software will be available first for tablets, and noted there already are products to recover lost information and to locate a lost device.

Symantec’s Marc Fossi said there will be enough smartphones and mobile devices with common operating systems for which cyber criminals will create targeted malware.

“While we haven’t seen a lot of specific threats directed at these devices, I think that we’re getting closer to that sort of tipping point,” he told The Canadian Free Press.(source:The New New Internet)
