The Fair Trade Commission on Wednesday raided DeNA Co., the Tokyo-based operator of the popular Mobage-town mobile game site, on suspicion it tried to prevent software developers from providing game software to rival GREE Inc.

DeNA is also suspected of effectively threatening to terminate deals with developers refusing to comply and blocking Mobage-town customers from accessing game titles of developers who refused to go along, sources said.

The FTC alleges these measures violated the antimonopoly law by placing unfair restrictions on trading partners’ business operations, they said.

DeNA has developed an open platform service allowing outside game developers to provide their titles through the Mobage-town site. GREE launched a similar service in the summer.

The sites provide mobile phone users with games free of charge and lead them to buy extra game tools that make the games more interesting. The game developers get part of the revenue from the extras.

DeNA and GREE dominate the market, which is estimated at ¥100 billion.

Computer programs for cell phone games are relatively basic in order to curb battery consumption, making it easier for software firms to develop the same titles for different mobile game site operators.

DeNA, founded in March 1999, launched the Mobage-town site in February 2006, attracting customers by allowing them to communicate with each other through games. The company debuted on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December 2007.

Mobage-town’s list of registered customers topped 20 million in July. GREE’s site has also exceeded that level.(source:japan times)
